Dar es Salaam is Tanzania's largest city and it's primary business centre. While Dar es Salaam is not specifically a tourist destination, many travellers will go through the city en route to other parts of Tanzania. Dar es Salaam is located on the Atlantic coast a short distance from the island of Zanzibar.
Travel Tips from people who've been to Dar es Salaam
For the budget traveller, you should book in at the YWCA. Establishment is extremely well priced, very clean up keep, includes breakfast, clean bedding and has mosquito nets. Very well situated in city centre, right behind the post office. Getting to and away, catch a dalla-dalla to a vehicle that has Posta written on it. the ride will cost you Tsh250 and the rooms start from Tsh8000 per room for a family room, just a fancy word for twin beds. Banks are across the street. Infront of the post office is the dalla-dalla stop dor convenient travel to and away from the hostel and not get harrassed by any street locals. Lots of restaurants in the area, and across the street, next to the fuel station, inside the restaurant, there is a internet cafe with excellent speed at Tsh1000 per hour. You cant beat this anywhere.
Happy Dar travel :) Good tip? (0) A nice city, but dangerous at night. You have to deal everything (Taxi or anything that you want to buy). Don't show your belongings (money, jewells, camera, etc). And be carefull if you would like to take the ship to Zanzibar, there is a ship early in the morning or last a 16h. The other ships take 9 hours to go to the island. So be carefull where you buy your ticket.... Last thing, there is a huge mess to exchange travellers cheque. We could only change them at the Movenpick Hotel of Dar Es Salaam. None of the other would change it... and forget to use a credit card.... they don't accept it. Last thing, take local money and if you use dollars, be carefull on the currency exchange.... otherwise you will lose a bit money ;) Good tip?
