Thailand Plants & Animals
Plants Thailand has an enormous variety of plant species, the majority of which remain undocumented at this time. About 1 in every 120 specimens that have been documented have proven to be new to science, leading to the discovery of over 1883 new species in total. In all, it is believed that Thailand may host as many plant species as all of Europe. Of particular beauty and importance to Thai culture are 9 trees believed to bring good fortune and happiness. Animals Thailand has an amazing abundance of animal, with over 248 mammal species, 1338 species of butterflies and 401 different species of reptiles. A simple trek into one of Thailand’s many national parks can bring one face to face with elephants, great Thornbills, wild macaque monkeys, and a variety of other remarkable animals. The Mekong river running along the Thai-Laotian border is home to the largest freshwater fish species in the world such as the Giant Freshwater Stingray and the Giant Mekong Catfish, the largest of which was recorded at over 2 meters in length and weighing 636 pounds.
