a trek in the jungle is a most. Its a fantasts experience pretty tough but worth it when you arrive each night in the villages. Small highlights was a waterfall we had to climb up, attending a traditional wedding, and views along the way.

Chiang Mai is an excellent place to plan several trips into the jungle, visiting tribes, or just relax at the local markets in an eased up atmosphere. Worth spending more than a couple of days.

go treaking in the mountains with Elephant rides through the jungle and sleep over in remote hill tripe villages. Great experience. To get to chaing mai use the overnight sleeper trains, very cheap and a great way to get there nice and refreshed for the journey ahead

Up north in Thailand I had a beautiful experience. I went into the jungle on an elephant with Thai elephant singers. It was a bright clear night and it was completely silent in the very dark jungle, the only sound was the elephants walking carefully through the jungle and the singers sang there calming songs for the elephants. I couldn't have a greater New Years Eve! The next day i visited the small community of the longnecks. Very special to see, as they looked really beautiful with all their jewelry around their stretched necks but very touristic too, so i'm not sure if i would recommend. The tourism income is also what they live from, so it's also a good thing. Not sure... But i had a great time in this area, the northern part of Thailand is the most beautiful part i think.
