The Bahamas

Of all the Caribbean islands, The Bahamas are geographically closest to the United States. Stretching from the Grand Bahama in west to Great Inagua to the south east, the Bahamas comprises 23 inhabited islands and thousands of unpopulated islets and cays. Marking the birth place of the Gulf Stream, The Bahamas are also the spawning ground for many big fish, making it a popular place for fishing. Fish caught around Bimini have set some of the largest game fishing records worldwide. Exuma the sailing capital of the Bahamas, is filled with hidden coves, bays and harbours. Throughout the waters, beautiful reefs teeming with wildlife await, and in fact more than 5% of the planet’s reef mass is located here. On land, the culture is a mix of European and African – most of the inhabitants are West African by descent. Bahamians take great pride in their past, and a laid-back attitude prevails throughout the islands. Nassau and Grand Bahama are the most popular resort islands, though at one point, the area was more popular with pirates including notorious ones such as Blackbeard. Cave lovers can visit The Caves on the Bahamas, and Cartwright’s Cave on Long Island, while those interested in learning more about the islands’ past can visit old historical buildings, including The Mermitage, a small monastery located at the highest point in the Bahamas, the Deveau Mansion ruins, an 18th century plantation home, the Andros lighthouse, and the Salt Beacon.

Lots of shops, gambling and expensives restaurants--not so much for me. However, the BEST part of Atlantis is their amazing aquarium, and the best part of that: the jellyfish rooms, with walls of irridescent jellyfish..

Do it! Do it! Do it! I have lifetime memories from my time with the dolphins in the Bahamas and can not wait to someday return. Special moment for anyone!

Really beautiful, stay on Paradise Island not the main island because there are some pretty rough neighborhoods. Beware the food is very expensive on P.I.

The beaches are pristine, and the waters are amzing shades of blue. I think sunrise can be as wonderful as sunset here.

There are tons of things to do here. There's a straw market, night clubs, restaurants, dive and dolphin encounter facilities.

Take a day trip to Atlantis Hotel. They have an amazing aquarium and the hotel is dripping in luxury. If you have the money stay for the night.

Nassau is a great island to visit...most of the hotels won't let you access their beaches so come prepared if you are a cruise ship passenger. We took the ferry to Paradise Island and hung out by the Atlantis Hotel. A must see - this hotel is amazing...plop down on the beach and get a local coconut with rum poured in it...yummy! Bring sunscreen - it's extremely hot here!

That's where the big hotels are on Grand Bahama. You can find casinos, a marina and an open air shopping mall with bars and restaurants. Flights from Nassau, Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, as well as Atlanta and other American cities

Pretty enough, but full of tourists and touristy things. Spend the extra $$ and go to Jamaica.

Cable Beach the sand was corse but it was a nice beach. The best part of the beach was at the Breezes end which is a great hotel they are up very early every morning cleaning the pools and beach. Also there is always someone keeping gaurd of the beach incase you wanted to spend the night out there. If you didn't stay at the Radison which has the casino you could still enjoy the casino.

Get your hair done by the women selling beads in the street. Usually $1 a braid, a real Caribbean experience!

Don't just stick with the crowds when the boat arrives......take a walk down the beach for some alone time. It makes it alot more interesting too if you've been drinking all that free alcohol on the way to the island.
