Tonga Plants

Coconut Palms are a mainstay of Tonga, and can be found all throughout the country.  Growing up to 30 metres in height, the plants have been used extensively by the locals for everything from food to furniture, fuel and matting.  The trees are even used for climbing - with special techniques mastered by the locals.  Passionfruit trees are also quite common and their inviting aroma can be noticed wafting through the area.

Other Tonga plants include the Beach Morning Glory - a creeping vine vibrant flowers, Lantana - a type of prickly plant, Screw Pine - a striking coastal pine noted for the multiple brace roots that extend out from the tree.
