Tunisia Travel Guide

Tunisia has a wide range of landscapes to explore from the great sand dunes of the Sahara Desert to beaches, mountains and grasslands. It also has many excellent ruins from its time as the center of the Carthaginian Empire and, later, as part of the Roman province of Africa.

There are many things to see and explore. Wander through and get lost in the souks and the medina of the capital city of Tunis. Check out the outstanding Musee du Bardo, which has a staggering array of mosaics taken from ancient Tunisian sites. This collection has been described as the best of its kind in the world.

Dougga is the best preserved of the ancient cities with its outstanding collection of Roman buildings. The theatre is particularly well preserved and is still even a stage for plays. Much has been lost from Carthage since its days as the head of a once powerful empire that threatened Rome, but there are still many archaeological sites to visit. Bulla Regia is another ancient site that is notable for its underground buildings that were unique for its time.

Other parts of Tunisia have much to recommend as well. Kairouan is the fourth holy place of Islam and contains the monumental Great Mosque. Tozeur has a very attractive oasis and is home to the Dar Cherait Museum with its collection of art objects and jewellery. The relaxing Isle of Jerba was claimed to be the enchanting land of the Lotus Eaters from Ulysses famous voyage in 'The Iliad."

Hammamet, Tunisia
Hammamet was very easy to get to from Tunis, I took their bus system and it took less than two hours to get there. Upon arrival, I got into a taxi and watched a very dirty city pass by me. The tourist areas though, near the hotels, are beautiful! The beaches are gorgeous and the Mediterranean is more beautiful than it is in Southern Italy! Beware all females of the casanova's on the beach, they will follow you like lost puupies. I wore a fake wedding band and told them I was married and my husband was sleeping in the hotel, that got rid of them fairly quickly! Apart from that, Hammamet is one of the most relaxing beach destinations I've ever been to! Do make sure to go all inclusive though, otherwise the resorts will bleed you dry.

stay away from the prawn cocktails, and don't buy an authentic hand made rug even if they give you 1000% discount especially for you because its the birthday of the sultan's dog and he must do a good thng that day to a stranger in honour of the day, or something.

when going to tunis, make sure you actually spend as little time as possible in Tunis. Visit the outskirts... they are a million times better.  and dont take a taxi any time near prayer time in the afternoon...  x
