Turkey

At the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Turkey is a remarkable country whose rich byzantine history has left it with an abundance of cultural treasures. Istanbul, Turkey’s capital city nestled against the Bosphorus river as it opens into the Marmara Sea, is one of the most romantic cities in the world. Four of the country’s greatest attractions – Aya Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and the Grand Bazaar (a sprawling labyrinth of stores fronts and shops selling everything under the sun) – are all within walking distance of one another in Istanbul’s Sultanamet district. The city’s Beyoglu district on the north side of the Bosphorus’ horn offers some great nightlife. Head south from Istanbul to the ancient ruins of Efes and continue by sailboat along the Mediterranean coast, stopping at hidden bays and emerald green lagoons along the way. Head back inland to see the incredible sandstone formations and cave churches in Cappadocia’s badlands. Travel east to base of Biblical Mount Ararat and head north to see the Sumela monastery built right on a cliff in the mountains overlooking the Black Sea. Do all of this while enjoying delicious healthy food (be sure to sample a stuffed eggplant dish call “Imam Beyulde” that is so good it is supposed to have caused an Imam to faint while eating it). In all, Turkey is a country that can offer the trip of lifetime to virtually any kind of traveler.

Orhaniye, Aegean Region, Turkey
It is beautiful place near Marmaris, the best way to get there it is to taka a dolmus - small bus from Marmaris. U will discover there great nature and unique beaches. Specialy Kiz Kumu - place where u can walk on the water and stand in the middle of the bay. Going that "water road" it is something u will never forget!
Alanya, Mediterranean Region, Turkey
If you like swimming,I suggest you to go Alanya because there are a lot of beaches everywhere.
Belek, Mediterranean Region, Turkey
The place to be if you want to go golfing in Turkey!!!
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
If you're short on time, avoid places like Topkapi palace, etc. They charge yabancis (foreigners) out the nose, and the grand bazaar is cooler anyway... and has free admission. Give yourself a solid two days to fully explore it.Make sure to take a water taxi to Uskudar on the Asian side of the city!
Yalikavak, Aegean Region, Turkey

live near the blue mosque - you hear the imam every morning at five o'clock which is a funny but also sleep-consuming :)
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
Best place to stay in Istanbul -SulanAhmet (£25 to 40 per night). Low cost airlines go to Sabiha Gokcen Airport. Take Bus upto Taksem (cost 10 Turkish Liras). The journey is 45 mins to 75 minutes. From Taksem, take a taxi to Sultan Ahment. Better if you fix the rate before hand to 10 to 15 Turkish Liras. Places to visit: SultanAhmet mosque (blue mosque), Yerebatan Cistern, Top-Kapi Palace, museum opposite to SultanAhmet mosque if you realy interested in musuem. Istanbul Nightlife: Taksem. Turkish Hamam: Sultanahmet hamam at Sultanahmet. Approx cost Liras 60. The hama is not relaxing; you would need good sleep after you are massaged!
Pamukkale, Aegean Region, Turkey
Something different...but overcrowded :S
Yalikavak, Aegean Region, Turkey
It could be that I was there in March, but Yalikavak was dullsville. The beach was nothing special, the shops that were opened seemed to be dominated by tourist-baiting trinketry, and locals seemed less approachable and friendly than anywhere else in Turkey (a country that is arguably one of the friendliest on earth...at least the citizenry is, anyway). It might be worth a stop if you're lazing a few days away on the Bodrum peninsula, but I was more taken with the scenery of the tiny village of Gumusluk.
Selcuk, Aegean Region, Turkey
Selcuk is a quiet little town which acts as the jumping-off point for going to visit Ephesus. However, the town, though not exactly spectacular or grandiose, has some interesting sights, and is a good place to interact with the locals--plus, it's surrounded by drop-dead-gorgeous rolling hills and orchards of fruit trees. It's also a popular nesting spot for storks, which usually arrive in late March and early April to mate with their lifelong partners. As to the sights, here you'll find what remains of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Temple of Artemis. These days, it amounts to some scattered ruins in a field, but it is there nonetheless. Also in town is the Basilica of St. John the Apostle, a grand fortress, the Isa Bey Mosque and a museum housing artifacts found at the Ephesus site, which is about 3 km away, if memory serves.
Selcuk, Aegean Region, Turkey
If you find yourself in Selcuk make sure you visit the Kiwi Carpet Shop on the Main Rd. After having problems with the local customs authorities about getting our vans landed in Turkey the kind hearted employees from here wagered a deal for all 3 vans on our behalf. What followed was a week of madness camped outside their shop, free breakfast every morning and countless BBQs and day trips around the area. Out of 12 blokes only 4 bought carpets yet when it was time to leave they wouldn't let us go, end result being promising to revisit them on the way back up from Oludeniz, Olympos etc which resulted in us staying there for another 3 days. Top place, unbelievable hospitality and no pressure. I lost my dick.
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
Take a big trolley bag when you visit the market in downtown Istanbul or you will be left with lots of bags after your shopping like us and no way of carrying them away!
Dalyan, Aegean Region, Turkey
You need to try the Mudbaths. It was incredible. Notice the faded pictures the celebrity visit of Dustin Hoffman circa 1976. It is a magical place as you take the water taxi through acres of reeds to get to the city. We very much enjoyed going to the beach after visiting the city.
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
A great place to eat and enjoy spectacular view so the city is the Maiden's Tower. Try to go just as they do the evening call to prayer. Spectacular.

Some highlights of the city..(there are many more...)Try Istanbul at summertime or spring..Visit the magical Bosphorus and take a cruise around it from Bebek.Visit Hagia Sofia and Top Kapi, where you can have lunch at the palace's restaurant with a stunning view of the Bosphorus. Check out the quiet road between Top Kapi and Hagia Sofia with the small wooden houses on the side..Unforgetable..Walk up and down the street of Pera, close to Taksim sq. and don't forget to taste Kazandipi at Saray!!Worth going back to Istanbul only to taste that!!Don't forget to visit Kapali Carci for a noisy mixture of smells and cultures...
Pamukkale, Aegean Region, Turkey
When I went here in 1984 you could swim in the pools which was a fantastic experience. You can't do that any more, but this is still worth a visit. Whatever you do, take your sunglasses. The reflections from the white calcifications and the pools on a bright day are literally blinding.
Marmaris, Aegean Region, Turkey
when in Marmaris always keep an eye out for local trading markets, you can pick up some amazing things for very little money. and always be prepared to haggle, it's kind of expected.

Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
When you want the true Turkish experience and you want to stray off the beaten tourist path, find a hamam the Turks visit themselves. Once in there, go with the flow...observe those around you and don't shy out of a massage. It might look scary to have your bones racked like that, but it sure is a must-experience event.
Marmaris, Aegean Region, Turkey
the waterfront city was like ibiza, late nights, warm weather, friendly people, lots of parties.
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
local street cafe food is as good as restaurant food, just cheaper
Bodrum, Aegean Region, Turkey
Also, the tiny town Gümbet right next to it has some good bars and pubs.
Pamukkale, Aegean Region, Turkey
Located in the Eastern part of Turkey, Pamukkale is a wonderful place to visit if you like natural calcium pools. Pamuk means "cotton", while Kalle is "castle". Thus the name cottoncastle. This is a must see sight in Turkey. Be ready to soak your body in the mineral baths which are ice blue in color. After that, you can head out to Cappadoccia, where you can see the fairy domes that are only in seen in dreams or Star Wars Movies@!
Ankara, Central Anatolia, Turkey
Ankara seems to many as a really boring place to visit..but as a photographer.. i got my best photos there. if you go visit the big castle at night time.. you will find great treasures of people..cafes and real life.. also they are non touristy and let you come in and investigate places. The views are spectacular..but beware of the little kids shooting fake guns at you.. it scared the crap out of me.! lol anyway.. the city is a real different adventure and much faster paced than istanbul.. many of your best bargains will come from here..because there isnt the tourist prices. Lots to do..find someone who lives there and they will help you to all the best place. gorgeous in winter.
Oludeniz Fethiye, Turkey
Oludeniz beach is great, but don't be fooled into thinking it is brilliant white sand as it appears in the photos. It is actually quite shingly so remember to take some footwear. The paragliders are a spectacular sight.

Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
Haggle....mentally put a price for yourself in advance: how much do I want to pay for it. The first bid you do should be ridiculously low...after all, the vendor's price is ridiculously high in the first place. He will set a new price...you now both know you're in for the game. Start haggling down and be overly dramatic about it...ask special discounts if you buy more than one item, make a total price. Threathen to walk away, you'll be called back with a new price...yet know that if you indeed walk away, don't come back for the same item. Because then the vendor knows you're interested. Let your travel partner/spouse play the bad cop, as if she/he doesn't want you to spend that much money on the items. The vendor will often his price to meet the spouses' criticism. Watch out what you say to one another...even in your own language. The vendors speak much more languages than you'd imagine. Stop when you're both happy on the price...and have fun.
That way both parties will be satisfied about the deal. There's no use in angering vendors by trying to press for ridiculously low prices.
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
The best place in the world, definitely 3
Alanya, Mediterranean Region, Turkey
Don't miss dinner at:
Cubana - have pick up service. Just ask at hotel reception and they'll give off a call and the friendly staff will come pick you up.
Green River- great food and very nice staff!! Mimosa hamam is by far my favorite in Alanya - very nice, men and women are separated. You feel refreshed indeed when leaving this place.
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
The only city in the world located on 2 different continents... It's an amazing experience to see the Asian continent form the European side and vice-versa... Don't forget to cross the famous Bosphorus Bridge and enjoy the most beautiful view on Earth!
Selcuk, Aegean Region, Turkey
if you want to see what Greeks used to create and how well they are standing even 4000 years later, go to Ephesus. a whole city remains there to prove that once upon a time Greeks were enlightening the world with cultural insights. definitely worth visiting.
Selcuk, Aegean Region, Turkey
Kusadasi Turkey: If you are on a ferry cruise of the Greek Isles and port in Kusadasi be aware that there is a really cool market not far from the port. You can buy belly dancing outfits in any size imaginable. There are leather coats galore, shoes, gorgeous pillows and "Real Fake Watches":) Beware that these merchants are so slick that one of our travellers held out her hand to recieve change, with her change purse in hand. When she finnished thanking the merchant for his time she noticed her change purse was gone, never to be found. It can happen to you!
Selcuk, Aegean Region, Turkey
Ephesus is majestic and humbling. The ruins here are incredible just for the sheer size of the site. It was a town of 250,000 people, with two amphitheatres, and a library that was on par with the great library at Alexandria. Its marble pathways are molded with wheel tracks, its market stalls still have floor mosaics (hearts and ducks, oh my!), and there's even the odd bit of graffiti referring to a brothel. It's amazing this was built, it's mind boggling to think of the everyday life that happened here, and it's startling how quickly people must have packed up and moved away, once the harbor, on which the city formerly sat, silted in (it's visible far in the distance). If you're going to Turkey, it'd be foolish to miss this; try to schedule a full day for exploring it.
Selcuk, Aegean Region, Turkey
The statue of Trajan in Ephesus is almost destroyed - only a foot standing on a round globe saying "I conquered it all" ... proof that the Romans knew that the earth was round!  That knowledge was lost in Europe until the 15th century!
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
Go during the off season, november, ramadan was fascinating and we got to stay in the historic part for next to nothing
Marmaris, Aegean Region, Turkey
Marmaris is turistic city but behind a wall of disco's and bar's hide great history. First traces of human presence found near the city are dating back 12,000 years. In ancient ages it was also an important region on the read to egypt for example... Try to know Marmaris as it was, not only as it is now. U will discover many great and interesting things.
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
A great city, rich with culture. The traditional music of Turkey is also excellent. Visit some of the traditional instruments shops near the downtown.
Antalya, Mediterranean Region, Turkey
Very busy city, supposed to be great for shopping, but it's not my case. Not into fake Louis Vuitton bags and gold chains.
Pamukkale, Aegean Region, Turkey
don't go to where it's busy. follow the aquaduct which is covered. you can walk on top of it. you will end up at a hillside where, if you remove a big rock, there will be a kind of shower. the basins there are much more softer than the ones where all the tourists go. those actually hurt your feet...
Antalya, Mediterranean Region, Turkey

Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
Istanbul is full of history. Be sure to visit the Hagia Sofia - such an awesome structure, very important to church and political history - it was also the biggest/grandest church for more than a thousand years!
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
Kebabs (filled with beef, vegs and spices) and a bottle of Coke would be very nice after a day of strolling around the city. Also good with local tea.
Goreme, Central Anatolia, Turkey
Be sure to take a side trip to Avenos, the pottery town. In addition to being a more mellow, less touristy place, there are many pottery shops with all kinds of pottery works, including replica Hittite jars of tears used to gather tears for the dead (so they say). Also, don't miss the Hair Museum at Chez Galip, where there are over a ten thousand locks of human hair, many contributed by visitors.
Kars, Eastern Anatolia, Turkey
This place is known for snow in the winter (Orhan Pamuk wrote a book called "Snow" about it). However, it is a beautiful place in summer, surrounded by fields of wildflowers. Not coincidentally, it is also known for its honey.
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey

Send Photo to a FriendThe area around and inside the citadel, being the oldest part of Ankara, contains many fine examples of traditional architecture. There are also lovely green areas in which to relax. It is well known that the Ankara region was the cradle of wine in Hatti and Hittite times around 2000 B.C. Many restored traditional Turkish houses in the area of the citadel now serve as restaurants and shops.

hahahaha, the city I like the most in the WORLD, where east meets west... It is simply incredible, amazing, culturally rich, a lot of history... the BEST
Canakkale, Marmara Region, Turkey
It is a shame that most people come here at ANZAC time as I went at ANZAC time in the 70's and experienced it without the 12,000 plus people. go another time for this surreal experience.
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
This city is insane. Traffic is insane. Vendors are insane. Waiters are insane. Practically anyone selling anything is insane. Police presence is insane. Size and architecture are insane. Number of taxis is insane. All in a good way :DBut the food sucks, except the lamb shish which is divine!Visit the Galata tower, you get a view of the whole city and Bosphorus. The Topkapi palace treasury has insane amounts of jewels and a diamond that will make you go blind from all the glittering.
Izmir, Aegean Region, Turkey
The strange building that hold the museum built in 1831 as the St. Rock Hospital and had patients that suffered from black death! It is situated right next to the Archaeological Museum but I like it more because it shows many things about the local daily life. You can see many samples of traditional Turkish folkloric artifacts, a collection of Bergama and Gordes carpets, traditional costumes etc I visited the museum with Emek, my local friend in Izmir so we had some nice conversions about some common local customs the two counties share through the years. The museum is open every day except Monday between 08:30-12:00 and 13:00-17:00) and the cost is only 2YTL (1.2euro!).

The palace the Ottomans built to dazzle the Europeans. Imagine Liberace with a harem (if that doesn't ruin your mind). Unfortunately, you're not allowed to wander the interior at will. Strictly guided tours (with protective booties over your shoes). You can wander the grounds, though, and enjoy the magnificent Bosporus (and sight an occasional chicken).http://www.kultur.gov.tr/EN/BelgeGoster.aspx?17A16AE30572D313679A66406202CCB06184B38089B8DF0F http://www.kultur.gov.tr/EN/BelgeGoster.aspx?17A16AE30572D313E603BF9486D4371D12460496EB6D6255

Pamukkale, Aegean Region, Turkey
A must do - swimming among the ruins of antique roman baths - bring a mask or goggles as the water is sparkling (tastes just like sparkling mineral water) and it hurts when you open eyes under water. The deeper water the warmer!
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
Go over to the Asian half and find the Migros (Swiss supermarket) hidden there... it sells alcohol and cigarettes, products it's known for not selling in the original country. Also, don't overdose on Apple Tea. It does become sickening.
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
If you chose to visit Istanbul, get ready to deal with hundreds of hard sellers on every corner - it's so much fun, though. The people are very friendly welcoming - never forget that every single one of them is trying to sell you something. Or if not him personally, he will drag you to his cousin's store, who will offer you apple tea...and some carpets. Besides that, Istanbul is a perfectly peaceful city, and there's tons of stuff to look at, especially if you're somewhat into culture architecture. Don't miss out on the surroundings of the red mosque, just stroll about in the quarter, it's beautiful. Just across the street from the side entrance of the red mosque there's a little cafe where you can hang out on the couches and enjoy an apple tea...and just down that road, there's a little hotel which offers beautiful rooms for an affordable price. Make sure to cross the bridge and walk over to and up the Galata tower - GREAT view over the whole city. Looking down, you'll see a gorgeous rooftop cafe (direction Bosporus), get a drink there, it's a fabulous place. Then, you also can't miss a boat tour on the Bosporus, up to the black sea - make sure to bring a warm jacket though, unless it's summer, of course. Istanbul is an incredible, vibrant city with two faces - one is very traditional and conservative, the other is tank-top liberal...be ready for that, as well ;-) - oh, and don't go out to the touristic parts of town to eat, stay in the small kebab places...they're much friendlier, not as costly, and the food is incredible!
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
incredible, beautifull and huge city.i love it!!best places are topkapi palace and aya sophia mosque
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
I think all the food is great in Turkey!! The kebab places of course, but there's also kumpir (giant potatoes), delicious sweet deserts etc (you find them at a 'pastane'), simit (bread shaped like donuts, they sell it at every corner and costs 50 YTL) and lots of other types of small breads (you should go to a 'simitçi), fish at the Galata brigde,... and of course there is nargile, which you should have in a typical cafe with small tables and cushions.
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
Just go the the Turkish spa. You are totally relaxed when you walk out.
Dalaman, Aegean Region, Turkey
Not much there but an airport and dirty streets. It is HOT in the summertime, but i found the people in the area are extremely nice
Gelibolu, Marmara Region, Turkey
ANZAC cove, lots of walking with little signage to help you with where or what you are looking at. A very awe inspiring place when you stand on the beach and look up at the cliff imagining what they went through... Simpson's grave is on the water front near anzac cove. look every where or get a guide as I said there are few signs.
Ankara, Central Anatolia, Turkey
Well, I wouldn´t visit Ankara if I were you! It´s a city built up to be a capital.... only a capital! Nothing more than government and military buildings. Nothing to do, nothing to see.... boring! Although, some very good Universities brought many young Turks to live there... temporarily!
Bursa, Marmara Region, Turkey
Bursa: lovely, sweet, charming! A wonderful city, probably the real heart of Turkey coz is not fake like Istanbul and not too fundamentalist like in the far East! Go to Mudanya, if possible, and eat fish for a very cheap price, but the quality is super! A tip: eat Pideli Köfte (go to Kayhan Street (just go down from the Heykel, the very center of the city" and turn right when you see Kayhan Bazaar sign) you can find many restaurants which serve the best pideli kofte in the city in both sides of the street. Pideli kofte is made of small delicious meatballs served on small pieces of pide. It is served by adding tomato soup and melted hot butter on it. Some yoghurt is served by the plage) and Kestane Şekeri (they are everywhere!)
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
go and fall in love with that city ..... normally i hate big ones but istanbul .........
Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
Istanbul is a very nice place to travel, the city is situated on two continents - Europe and Asia. Fatsa, Western Black Sea Coast, Turkey
The little town of Side is absolutely worth a visit! This is a wonderful town, very cosy with a lot of restaurants and bars, but also a lot of culture: everywhere in the town you can find Roman ruins. You enter the town by car driving under the ancient grate gate, it's very impressive.
Fatsa, Western Black Sea Coast, Turkey
If you have the opportunity to go to a concert in the old Roman Theatre in the beautiful town of Side, it's an absolute must, an unforgettable experience.

Bodrum, Aegean Region, Turkey
Well, years ago when we were in travelling in Turkey, the people from our hotel in Bodrum sent us to Gumusluk in a dolmus, a small town near Bodrum. You can find the ruins of the old city of Myndos there, but also the beach is very nice, with a lot of Turkish families, giving it a nice familiar atmosphere. It was the 3rd of september, the day before my birthday and we decided to choose a restaurant there. there were an awful lot of them, at the beginning of the beach, but we decided to stroll a bit further. We found a place, without the real tourist look and a nice terrace in the water... and the food was great.... the best Mezze I ever ate in my whole life... it was one of the best days in a three week holiday with a lot of ups and downs... the same day Aaliyah died in a plain accident and 9 days later the twin towers were attacked...

There is a taxi driver in istanbul - a great guy, drives a cadillac- the only cadillac in turkey as he says, he will do a sightseeing tour with you and show you anything you want. He is such a friendly guy, just lovable. You can pay him what ever you want for your trip. My familiy and me were very happy that he was our driver.

Istanbul, Marmara Region, Turkey
Sighhtseeing Attractions, - Saint Sophia and The Blue Mosque, and other great historical buildings. These buildings are old and still stand tall after the great earthquake in year 2005 or was it in 1995. All these buildings are well maintained but had high values, Especially in town the Hotels are not cheap because of the old restoration buildings these buildings have high values even its cramp inside. As for food, try their ever famous Turkish Delights and Apple tea. Its very sweet mind you. So for those people have sweet tooth you can always request for less sugar or honey. For a box it of turkish delights costs you about USD 5.00. You can get cheaper at the Great Bazaar. They have homogeneous products. Do not try to negotiate for price but instead in quantities.

La ville est totalement magique. Je dirais qu'elle est sombre par le fait qu'elle ne met pas un grand sourire sur son visage mais complètement magique par sa population, son bosphore, ses nuits, ses étoiles, sa vie simplement.
