The area around and inside the citadel, being the oldest part of Ankara, contains many fine examples of traditional architecture. There are also lovely green areas in which to relax. It is well known that the Ankara region was the cradle of wine in Hatti and Hittite times around 2000 B.C. Many restored traditional Turkish houses in the area of the citadel now serve as restaurants and shops.

Ankara seems to many as a really boring place to visit..but as a photographer.. i got my best photos there.  if you go visit the big castle at night time.. you will find great treasures of people..cafes and real life.. also they are non touristy and let you come in and investigate places.  The views are spectacular..but beware of the little kids shooting fake guns at you.. it scared the crap out of me.!  lol  anyway.. the city is a real different adventure and much faster paced than istanbul.. many of your best bargains will come from here..because there isnt the tourist prices.  Lots to do..find someone who lives there and they will help you to all the best place.  gorgeous in winter.

Not the most exciting of destinations in Turkey, but if you are in Ankara and need to get to Istanbul - take the overnight train! It's a great ride in a fairly comfortable train. Leaves around 10pm and arrives in Istanbul at around 7am. You don't see much scenery except in the morning but it saves you money and gets you to Turkey's best city.
