Turkey - Precautions

1.   There have been terrorist attacks throughout Turkey in the last many years.  The most recent incident in Istanbul was outside the American Embassy in July or August 2008 when four people including some policemen were killed.  There were also bombing incidents in Izmir, Istanbul and other places.  So try to avoid places where there is a large congregation of people, of course this is not easy (if there are few people, you will probably not go there anyway).

2.   There are some (although rare) aggressive touts in the retail and restaurant businesses who are too persistent and do not accept no for an answer.  This has happened even in the small tourist town of Kusadasi off the Aegean coast where a small shop selling turkish tea and other things asked for an exortibant price for the tea and when offered a lower price, turned abusive.  Such behaviours should be reported to the tourism police for prosecution.

3.   Beware of dehydration, sunburns and sun strokes especially when you are outdoors visiting ancient ruins in sunny and hot weather.  There are no shades at these sites and you usually have to walk for hours.  Always have bottled water with you and drink lots of it.  Also, use sunblocks and umbrellas, hats or long-sleeves dresses.

4.   Avoid uncooked food or opened fruits.

5.   The following is more an advice than a precaution.  Places such at Aya Sofia, Basilica Cistern, Topkapi Palace, Kariye Museum and the Blue Mosque do not allow use of tripods inside the buildings.  So, do not bother to bring them along when visiting these places.

If your not interested in buying stuff from touts - there at every tourist spot selling books, postcards, whatever... don't even start a conversation. My uncle made the mistake of saying hello back to a guy before we went into the blue mosque, the guy continued to hassle us when we came out.
Burhaniye, Marmara Region, Turkey
Very clean seaside town and nice fresh dishes. Nice hotels, pensions and historical places.
Datca, Aegean Region, Turkey
The hammam ( Turkish Bath ) is well worth a visit, for a soapy wash, scrub with a loofah mitten, massage and oil massage - You feel very clean and relaxed afterwards - not as touristy as hammams in the main resorts ie Fethiye, Marmaris etc.
Pamukkale, Aegean Region, Turkey
Pamukkale is amazing! Well worth the dodgy bus ride and the hike up there! Just be sure to take lot's of water and you'll definately need your sunglasses as in the really bright Sun it's almost blindingly white.
Ankara, Central Anatolia, Turkey
Be aware of waters who are trying to get you in their restaurant. They are really boring.

If you are a lady and you are traveling alone or with ther female friends to Istanbul, you must be very cautious about the follows. Be prepared that once you go to the gold market, a lot of man will run afer you and trying to encourage you to see their stores. Especially if you are blonde, you will be suprised. So try to wear sometimg which does not call for attention and even if you go to a store to buy something, make sure that you will get a good deal. Tere is a huge gap between the price what they are asking for the goods at the start and between the one what they are willing to give it for.

When you visit Dolmabahçe palace, make sure you have tea and a ham/cheese toast at the waterside in front of it. And have a fish sandwich at the foot of the Galata Bridge! People tell me it's not a good idea, but it did it several times now, and according to me it's perfectly fresh. and it's great. Never eat dubious meat, like hotdogs, on the street, though.
