United Kingdom

The United Kingdom contains a wealth of treasures and natural diversity on its islands. It is now a very modern country in its cities, but you can still find patches of rural Britain if you look hard.

The capital of London is a very cosmopolitan city that attracts many immigrants and is a world financial center. It is filled with world-class sights ranging from the British Museum, National Gallery, and Tate Galleries, to Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, the Tower of London, and St. Paul’s Cathedral.

The university cities of Oxford and Cambridge have impressive architecture and also have fabled histories with the many famous graduates that have passed through their campuses. Other monuments can be found in cities such as York, Durham and Canterbury with their massive cathedrals, while Bath charms with its Georgian and Roman architecture. Ancient wonders can be found too at the world-famous standing stones of Stonehenge.

The competing Scottish cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh also offer a wealth of history and culture. The narrow streets of old Edinburgh, the Scottish culture in Glasgow, and the Edinburgh festivals are particularly memorable.

Away from the cities are some very diverse landscapes too, packed into a relatively small area. One highlight is the Scottish Highlands, with its hills and deep lochs. Also popular are the crags and lakes of the English Lake District. Both have inspired poets and attracted nature lovers throughout the ages. The cottages of the Cotswalds are also very quaint and charming.

London, England, United Kingdom

Benbecula, Scotland, United Kingdom
Dress up warm, it gets very wet and very windy.
Fort William, Scotland, United Kingdom
Buy fresh summer fruits in FW to take up to Ben Nevis to have a gorgeous picnic in summer! But take a jacket, it is Scotland!!!!!
Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom
I had heard many things about the city of Glasgow over the years, and most of them not rave reviews. Friends of mine from Kitty's, the Irish bar where I worked, talked about the Glasgow of their youths; dirty, dangerous and bleak. So I was happily surprised to arrive there, on Burn's Night 2004, to a vibrant, clean, overall friendly place. I stayed in Airdrie, out in the suburbs past Coatbridge (great bars there, by the way!!), but came into town a few times, to check out the shops, the river and the Science Centre. The Science Centre was fantastic, very interactive. Glasgow is pure dead brilliant!!
Ullapool, Scotland, United Kingdom
Take an umbrella!
Fort William, Scotland, United Kingdom
One of the big reasons I came to Ft. William was for Ben Nevis. If you're going to make an attempt up Ben Nevis, bear in mind what the weather is like. It may be a little cloudy at the base, but at the top visibility will likely be absolutely zero. There are a few cliff faces up near the top so step carefully if you can't see very far. Up at the top is the highest war memorial in Britain (as this is the highest peak). Leave an entire day for this one if you haven't really done a lot of climbing because it will be a workout. Bring a lot of water and food, too because you don't want to run out. All the way up, you'll ask people how much further it is and they always seem to reply "10 more minutes" even if it's another hour. Of course, you'll be donig the same thing when you come down. Legend has it that there is a monstrously large ghost that resides at the summit. It looks like the perfect place if you're up there when it's cold and rainy. This ghost is said to chase people back down the mountain. Beware
Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom
Unlike Edinburgh, Glasgow is the industrial centre of Scotland. Here you will see the latest trends and the movers and shakers of Scotland. This is a great place to use as a jumping off point for adventures up into the highlands and lake district of Scotland. Crime is a little higher here so keep an eye out. For the most part, though, the people here are always willing to be helpful when you need it. I suggest visiting Glasgow during the World Pipe Band Championships at the Glasgow Green, but that's just my personal taste. As a side note, there are fish and chip shops here that will let you bring in whatever food you want and for a fee they'll deep fry it for you. What an idea!
Achnasheen, Scotland, United Kingdom
Achansheen is a great outpost for the Scottisch Highlands. A perfect starting point for a hike through the rough edges towards Clen Affric.
Rugby, England, United Kingdom
Rugby has a KFC and a McDonalds
Bath, England, United Kingdom
Take the Bath comedy tour, you'll laughs your teeths out! (walking tour with hilarious guide at early dusk)
Craigleith, Scotland, United Kingdom
Craigleith is a small island in the Firth of Forth, just off the coast from North Berwick. You can't land on it as it is a breeding spot for seabirds, but the Sula II can take you around it and other islands in the area, where you can see puffins, gannets, and seals. Signs detailing the times for boat trips are dotted around North Berwick harbour.
Portrush, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom
Here's what you do in Portrush: get up and pack a picnic lunch, walk out and throw a blankie down on the East Strand beach (late at night near the light house is gorgeous) - start walking east, you'll soon run out of beach but keep to the rocks and don't be afraid! after a few miles you'll see the famous rock formation that looks like a dude's face staring out to sea... soon after, the lovely stone arch... and then the jackpot, Dunluce Castle, one of the most beautiful and architecturally interesting castles in the entire world. You don't need to pay to get in, just circumnavigate the place and find a crack in the ruins ;) If you want to keep up the hike, about ten miles later you'll come to the Giant's Causeway, weird!!
Drumnadrochit, Scotland, United Kingdom
Beware that the Lochness Museum is totally cheesy, in a way that is good if you aren't on a budget. This town is charming and remote with a hauntingly beautiful castle -- but not a lot for entertainment or nightlife. Good for romantic getaways; not good for excitement.
Huddersfield, England, United Kingdom
The Home of Rugby League, the St Georges Hotel heritage centre is a must (dont worry, non guests of the hotel are still welcome)

Bournemouth, England, United Kingdom

Dorchester, England, United Kingdom
Wander the streets, check out some of the small museums, they seem to change now and then but we went in the Terracota Warriors and Tutankhamun museums - not as good as seeing them for real (nothing beats the Cairo Museum for ancient Egyptian artifacts) but a good way to spend a damp afternoon. Theres also an old fortification / village on a hill just outside town, the name escapes me right now, well worth a visit, free and you get good views over the area.

Ardingly, England, United Kingdom
Ardingly (pronounced /ˈɑrdɪŋlaɪ/) is a village and civil parish in the Mid Sussex district of West Sussex, England, approximately halfway between London and the coastal city of Brighton. This area is part of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty known as the High Weald. Notable points of interest are the Ardingly Reservoir and the extensive grounds of "Kew in the Country" at Wakehurst Place. St Peter's Church, situated towards the western end of the village, dates from the 14th century. The rock formation of Big-Upon-Little lies close to a footpath between Ardingly and Horsted Keynes. Jon Snow, the television newscaster, was born in Ardingly. Contents[hide] 1 Events 2 Educational Establishments 3 Transport 4 References 5 External links // [edit] Events This rural village is quiet for most of the year with notable exceptions being the month of June in which two major events take place. The South of England Agricultural show in early June and the London to Brighton cycle event (usually held on Father's Day) attract visitors from across the country. Also small scale Field Social events are known to occur in fields close to Ardingly Reservoir, though are usually not approved by local authorities. The South of England showground hosts regular antiques fairs, which are often featured on the BBC TV game show Bargain Hunt.

York, England, United Kingdom
I have been to York many times over the years and have been repeatedly enticed by its historic charm to go back. It is one of the singularly most important historic cities in England and indeed the whole UK. It has a history dating back to before the Roman conquests, with many ancient archaeological artefacts on view in the various museums. During the Roman occupation it was the most important settlement in the North, when it was called Eberacum. There are still ruins from the fortifications the Romans built; of particular note are the wall towers which were copied from the plans of the hugely important Constantinople (also known as Byzantium and later Istanbul). In the period following the fall of the Roman Empire, the city gained notoriety as the capital of the sea-raiders from Scandinavia - who are often called the Vikings (all though this is disputed by some historians). Yorvik was a key trading centre and flourished, partly due to its easy river access to the shipping lanes of the North Sea. For those interested in this period visit the Yorvik centre, which although quite expensive is well worth it, as you gets the chance to see rebuilt copies of what historians and archaeologists believe the Viking settlement looked like. Also on show are many excavated weapons and coin finds. During the Medieval period York was the key bulwark against the numerous cross-bordering raids of the war-like Scots. (Under leaders such as King Robert I, victor at Bannockburn in 1314) There is an extensive network of walls which surround the city and also the partially ruined Clifford’s Tower. Large sections of the walls are available for the public to walk on and offer a great view of the city. There are still some of the fortified 'bars' of gatehouses standing, although some have been damaged by having been altered to allow traffic through them. The two other interesting medieval sights are the 'Shambles' which is one of the oldest streets in the UK - the name coming from the fact that it used to be where the butchers cut out all the innards from animals for sale. The other and far more famous sight is the Minster. This is the second most important Church building in the Anglican faith, with the Arch-Bishop of York being second only to the Arch-Bishop of Canterbury. It is a huge piece of Gothic and Norman architecture and is one of the most visited religious sights annually in the world. The interior design is exquisite and from the top of the Minster tower it is possible to view large sections of the Vale of York in all directions. York continued to be a key city during the complex Civil Wars of the 1640s, which involved participants from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. One of the most important battles of the whole period was fought nearby at Marston Moor, when the Royalist forces of the Earl of Newcastle and Prince Rupert were routed by the Parliamentarians.

Lived here from 1999 to 2001 and it is a small Community town about 10 min drive from the seaside town of Eastbourne East Sussex, it is very quiet and subdued which is awesome if you want to come home and rest. in the triangle are there is a chinese shop the food is awesome and I recommend the fried beef and carrott.the downs are about 15 mins away and the country is 5 mins away. it is like a village and a town as everything is so close nice place to visit thought there is nothing of interest to see in Polegate but out of town there is so much.
Bath, England, United Kingdom
If you're from a New World country like me, the graveyard and main church here are both fascinating simply because of their age...
Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
Edinburgh was so cool I went there four times! The first time was for an All Black-Scotland test match. You couldn't turn around without bumping into a Kiwi. Walking to the game from the hotel was wicked. The street was so full of people walking to Murrayfield that the cars weren't able to use the street at all. There were men in their kilts and people hanging out of windows cheering with banners and balloons. That night, Edinburgh just rocked! We went to the Grassmarket (I think from memory) to the nightclubs there. It was awesome. I went back the next weekend after completing a tour around Scotland just to shop and catch a bus to Peebles to see a cuz and then a train back to London. But I was back a couple of weeks later with Wanderer's World to do an orientation before Hogmany. Rose St boasts a whole heap of bars as well which we were ordered to check out before heading back to the Three Sisters at the Grassmarket. Wicked night! So then I was back for Hogmany! Well, I can tell you that Edinburgh can party large. It was about twenty hours that I lasted for! And the great thing is that Edinburgh is only a short distance from other great places to visit like Stirling Castle. Public transport is good and I recommend taking a guided tour on the double decker bus. There are several to choose from. Good shopping too and amazing architechure. So much to see and do. Too much to mention. Would love to go back again!
Brighton, England, United Kingdom
I've been twice on 2 separate trips to the UK...can't see what all the fuss is about. Apparently it's meant to be a good place to live and work, but as a tourist? Yawn...
Chester, England, United Kingdom
A good city to visit if you are interested in history, especially Roman history. They have actual Roman ruins.
March, England, United Kingdom
March, is a small town east of P'BORO, has a main street with a few shops, friendly place, river runs through centre of high street.
Newquay, England, United Kingdom
lively surfers paradise, very commercialised, a bit gordy.
Chertsey, England, United Kingdom
Chertsey in my memory had a lethal level rail crossing. The main road ran parallel to the rail track and then crossed it to the other side and continued running parallel. As a boy, I remember numerous collisions and fatalities taking place there.
York, England, United Kingdom
I have a very fond memory of visiting York with my father and having "proper" afternoon tea in a quaint little place. Sophisticated it ain't, but if you love history and nostalgia this is the place to go...
Southend-on-Sea, England, United Kingdom
Where do you begin with a place with the longest walking pier in the world... unfortunately its condition is not up to what it could be.Having said that, steer clear of the pier and the amusement park and head to the nearby Fish restaurant opposite. The fish and chips you get there are superb!
