Travel Tips from people who've been to Winchester
Winchester is a really nice city.
There are lots things to do shopping, eating, clubbing, sightseeing, festivals and walks
Parking: by st. Johns is the closed to the center and the price is ok.
Shopping: Its easy to find. go to the main road (close to the cathedral). You will find there a ouls, Jake wills, Primark, Top shop, river island and so on...
for every valid is something to find.
on the weekend they have a nice food and item market. With big roast pork or homemade cheese or some wooden toys.
Eating: for traditional english food go to the pastryshop.
or for a modern but nice multicultural meal to the sluge and lettuce. Good food and nice value.
Pizza Express or Pizza hut is for all italian food lovers perfect with a free salade a good value too.
Clubbing: Only the bar 3one. everything else is rubbish.
Don't make party in Winchester!!!
So take what you get :(
Sightseeing:
The winchester cathedral is really nice from teh outside. with a nice park outside perfect place to relaxx, but its way to expansive to visit. Save your money. It's like every other church.
Wolvesley Castle was built in 1137 but was destroyed in 1645, during the English Civil War. Parts of the castle were rebuilt and became the home of the Bishop of Winchester. Its really nice to climb on the top. Nice area and i had much of fun. Great pictures.
In great Hall you will see arthurs table ON THE WALL! a bit crazy. nice to watch and tehy have a beutiful garden full of roses.
JOin!!!!
Westgate is teh rest of the wall. You will pass it so that you know now, that is the westgate ;-)
nothing special
festivals: They have a really nice german christmas market with icescating Bratwurst and so on. Nice flair and a real christmas feeling also without snow :-)
Walks: Riverside walk. You can follow an attractive walk along the river. On your right you can see part of the old town walls.
[ If you have time, you can continue the walk up to St Giles Hill, from where there are attractive views of the city. You can also follow a footpath across the water meadows to the of St Cross (a place where food and assistance is given to poor and hungry travellers): even today, if you ask for wayfarer's dole at the Porter's Lodge, you will be given some bread and a drink ]
Hope i could help you
xoxo

The settlement of Winchester begins in about 150BC when a large defended enclosure was created on the western slopes of the modern city, in the area of Oram's Arbour. Since that time, great kings and bishops have left lasting reminders of their presence. During Saxon times, Winchester was the capital of England - chosen by King Alfred (Alfred the Great) - and the city remained a Royal residence for centuries afterwards. Below is a brief chronology of Winchester through the ages to illustrate the importance it has played in history.

Visit the cathedral of course, but don't miss the close and Cheyney court (to the south of the cathedral). Wander through Kingstgate to College Street and vsit the house where Jane Austin once lived. If you have time, walk  from the far end of the high street (near  King Alfred's statue) up to  St. Giles Hill for great views of the city (best in the late afternoon). Alternatively walk up past the weirs to the water meadows.
