People in Edinburgh
Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
Edinburgh was so cool I went there four times! The first time was for an All Black-Scotland test match. You couldn't turn around without bumping into a Kiwi. Walking to the game from the hotel was wicked. The street was so full of people walking to Murrayfield that the cars weren't able to use the street at all. There were men in their kilts and people hanging out of windows cheering with banners and balloons. That night, Edinburgh just rocked! We went to the Grassmarket (I think from memory) to the nightclubs there. It was awesome. I went back the next weekend after completing a tour around Scotland just to shop and catch a bus to Peebles to see a cuz and then a train back to London. But I was back a couple of weeks later with Wanderer's World to do an orientation before Hogmany. Rose St boasts a whole heap of bars as well which we were ordered to check out before heading back to the Three Sisters at the Grassmarket. Wicked night! So then I was back for Hogmany! Well, I can tell you that Edinburgh can party large. It was about twenty hours that I lasted for! And the great thing is that Edinburgh is only a short distance from other great places to visit like Stirling Castle. Public transport is good and I recommend taking a guided tour on the double decker bus. There are several to choose from. Good shopping too and amazing architechure. So much to see and do. Too much to mention. Would love to go back again!

BURN'S NIGHT

Each year on January 25, the great man's presumed birthday, Scots everywhere take time out to honour a national icon. Whether it's a full-blown Burns Supper or a quiet night of reading poetry, Burns Night is a night for all Scots.

Burns Night Supper
The Burns Supper is an institution of Scottish life, a night to celebrate the life and genius of the national Bard. Suppers can be everything from an informal gathering of friends to a huge, formal dinner full of pomp and circumstance. This running order covers all the key elements you need to plan and structure a Burns Supper that suits your intentions. For more info:

Who was Robert Burns then?
Robert Burns was born on January 25, 1759 in the village of Alloway near Ayr. He came from a relatively poor, tenant-farmer background, although he received a good education and read avidly as a youngster. It is during his years as a teenager and young man working on farms that he developed some of the passions that would colour the rest of his life - poetry, nature, women and drink.
Fame, but not necessarily fortune, followed in the wake of Burns’s first publication: "Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect" (Kilmarnock Edition). The collection contains many of his best loved poems, including "The Cotter’s Saturday Night", "To a Mouse" and "To a Louse".

Burns’s poetry at this time chopped and changed between English and Scots and this perhaps reflected his own ambivalent feelings towards the Edinburgh bourgeoisie. It was on his return to farming near Dumfries in 1788 that he penned his masterpiece in the Scots vernacular, "Tam O’Shanter" (1790).

In 1795 he sent his publisher "For a’ that and a’ that", a song which vocalised his support for the political radicalism which was beginning to infiltrate British society, especially through Thomas Paine’s controversial work, "The Rights of Man".
The Bard should always be seen in his national context: as the champion of the underdog in an underdog country.

Lots of history here as well as architecture and culture. The castle, Holyrood house and the road connecting the two together is the place to be. Numerous pubs and suchlike.

Edinburgh Arts & Recreation
Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
One of the most beautiful cities I´ve visited! You definitely need to go through historical city centre and when you have more time, then visit botanical garden, take a walk to Arthur´s seat (the highest hill which can be seen from everywhere in Edinburgh) and visit Scottish museum. You can also travel to coast, I reccomend village Norht Berwick! Town is very packed during August but it is worth visiting because you can see street artists everywhere and you can choose from hundreds of theatre plays, musicals, concerts etc. There are also some free shows!

Go Pub hopping! Go to Nicol Edward's Pub! It's amazing, all underground, live music, and best of all Haunted. Plus the Scottish boys love American girls, yet they are still polite.
