The largest US State is also a remote, rugged and expansive region. It is home to Denali National Park, where North America's tallest peak lies. Sightings of eagles, brown bears and leaping salmon are not uncommon. If you go to Ketchikan, be sure to go on a floatplane tour over the misty fjords! It was the best excursion I had in the whole world!

Travel Tips from people who've been to Alaska
it is verry cool why an i whriting this im realy board but it is cool Good tip? (+1) Always make sure that you have some sort of list for things to do. Juneau is known for its beauty -- in the summer and SOMETIMES in the winter --, but with how small it is, you can get bored pretty easily. If you're a more daring driver, bad news. People here in Juneau are on the slow side. So if you're planning for a vacation to Juneau, be prepared. You also need to bring some confidence and an outgoing "i dont care of what you think about me" attitude. Not all people in Juneau are kind. I would know, considering that I have taken this first hand. But, even though Juneau has its downsides (like this nasty smelling garbage dump right next to Wal Mart which is the major reason for the bird deformities in the area) there is really good food places. The names of the places aren't at the top of my head right now really but at the Nugget Mall near where I live, they have a great place to have steak sandwhiches. Be careful though, the people who work there aren't the brightest crayon in the box. There is also a place near the port with the BEST waffles EVER. I believe that its called the Alaskan Waffle Company or something like that. GO THERE. When I do, I usually get the Chocolate Chip waffle (they're all belgian waffles btw so they're pretty big) with a side of peanut butter. May sound gross, but trust me... IT'S THE BEST. My dad and stepmom usually get the waffle with the ham and eggs mixed in with salsa and sour cream. Again, may sound gross.... but don't underestimate food people. Oh, and the people who work there are nice. (Downside is you have to pick up the mess. No worries, just put the dirty dishes on this lunch cart, hang the syrup on the side, and you're good to go. It's actually the nicer thing to do since they just made you the best waffles in the world!!!) All in all, Juneau may be small, but the food and some of the sights are great. Just whatever you do... don't live there permenantly. Talk about a major mistake. Good tip? (0) Hoonah is a remote and pristine fishing village located on Chichagof Island off Alaska's main coast. If you enjoy peace and solitude, then you will enjoy Hoonah and its surrounding area. Getting to Hoonah, you can arrive by car on the marine highway, by seaplane, which is a short flight from Alaska's capital city of Juneau, or you can arrive by ship. If arriving by cruise ship as most visitors do, the destination is normally listed as Icy Straight Point, which is only about a 10 minute walk to the center of town and shuttle are availible for a very inexpensive fee. At the pier, there is a very interesting authentic 1912 salmon fish cannery set up to show the process from fresh caught fish to the final canned product. There are also multiple Native American demonstrations and activities to experience as well as local products and gifts that can be purchased. You can also find many totem poles for viewing in the surrounding area. There are several great restarants over looking the water that serve fresh caught fish as well as local brews of beer. Be sure to check out the numorous walking trails through the forest and along the coastline, as whales and other sea life, as well as Bald Eagles, can be spotted regularly. For the adventurous, you can soar with the eagles down the worlds longest zip line (5330 feet) with a 1300 foot vertical decent overlooking the bay! Hoonah is a great place for you and your family to experience Alaska's peaceful serenity, history, and native culture. Good tip? (0)
