very expensive to buy anything at the local store the tourist office never seems to be open.

Little, just south of Fairbanks. I don't think they have the right to call places things that have anything to really do with the north pole. They're not THE North Pole, just... North Pole. Stupid town, I wouldn't suggest living there or even really visiting.

During my stay in Skagway, I was camping over in Dyea. I noticed that Skagway itself goes from ghost town to downtown Tourism, USA whenever a cruise ship comes in. Both can be equally as interesting. I also suggest taking the White Pass/Yukon Route train. It's a great experience and gives you a chance to see the surrounding area without having to do the hiking. If you're looking for a bit more adventure, then hit the Chilkoot Trail, which starts here and can take you as far as Benett, British Columbia, if you choose to go so far. Even just a few hours on the trail is amazing.

Dont plan on being there more then 1 day, its a small but really good looking town - old Russian style. Dont bring way too warm clothes to Alaska, its not that cold there during the summer/
