Travel Tips from people who've been to Flagstaff
This place just blew my mind! We had a day off between Sedona and the Grand Canyon. We took the Lava Field Trail and it's a photographers dream! The black ash, lava rocks, bright green pines, and clear blue skies made it a very interesting landscape. The gift shop had some nice $5 books on Sunset Crater and Wupatki. We originally just went for the crater but I saw an overlook on the map of the painted desert and WOW! Descending from the crater down to the desert is a surreal experience. I liked the Citadel and the ruins...my jaw dropped the whole time. This is a gem north east for flagstaff that's not to be missed. Don't mind the 20-30 mile round trip you will be blown away by the scenery and history of this place! If you see 3 things in AZ do Sedona, Sunset Crater, and of course that big old hole in the ground...the Grand Canyon. Talking of the Grand Canyon you can take a helicopter flight but it is not for the fanthearted because the bottom is see through and I was glad to back on the ground. The winds can be pretty strong so you cannot descend too deeply in the Canyon
Flagstaff is a beautiful part of the USA. Although it can be a bit cooler than other places nearby, such as the Grand Canyon, because of its altitude. Some nice restaurant and local bars are in the ares and there are also a few local shops selling art and crafts made by the local indians from nearby reserves.
More than anything else though, the stunning scenery with sweeping views of the mountains are unsurpassed other than at Yosemite National Park.
Flagstaff is pretty quiet, not too much to do there, mostly a college town with a nice downtown atmosphere. Plenty of shopping and nightlife downtown, once you get out of downtown though, it's pretty much corporate for your choices of restraunts. The scenery of course is really nice, I like to head off the beaten path a bit, head out to Sedona, and then go past it.. a nice trip to Jerome will cleanse your soul.
