A quaint city located on the California seaside, Monterey is located a few hours drive south away from San Francisco.  Monterey is best know for its aquarium, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is located on Cannery Row, once an operational cannery.  Nearby to Monterey are various interesting small towns including Carmel by the Sea and Pacific Grove.  Those interested in a scenic drive should swing over to the picturesque 17 mile drive, though check the weather forecast first as the coast can be foggy.  Avid golfers will no doubt recognize the world famous Pebble Beach golf course, also located a short drive away.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Monterey
I stayed at Casa Munras.  I booked my hotel, the Queen size bed, through a third party.  After doing some more research on the hotel after booking my stay, I discovered that it was only $25 more to upgrade to a deluxe king size bed with a fireplace.  I was able to make the change instantly by calling the hotel.  The room was nice.  There was an extra little blanket on top of my bed that I threw onto the ground to curl up in front of the fireplace.  Do note that there is a DVD player in the room and the concierge has a free DVD collection you can borrow from.  The bed was for me because I'm only 5"2 and the bed came up to my waist.  The bedding is extremelyyy comfortable, I found it difficult to peel myself away from it.

Monterey is really beautiful and scenic in the summers, but you have to get down there early (before lunch) to find a place to park (which is metered...but there are ATMs). The planners have tried to make it feel olde tymey with lots of older-looking Victorian era buildings and candy shops, but there is also an aquarium if you don't plan to embark on a shopping spree or outdoor activities.

Not really a good place to hike, but if you have a large gathering it would be nice to utilize the large grill section for a family picnic. The water kind of smells, and there are LOTS of seals, but it is still relaxing and pet-friendly.

You can also rent paddle boats, kayaks, etc.

Whether you are individual or with full family members (with kids) traveler, Monterey Bay Aquarium is a splendid place to see and experience the marine life. Spare at least 2.5 hours time to stroll around. We can touch the starfish; enjoy the sea breeze at the open-air sea balcony, observe the jelly fish or deep sea creature up close and personal, or a big whale skeleton hanging above at one of the main site center.
