Situated at the edge of the San Francisco Peninsula, this west coast city is home to the Golden Gate Bridge, the infamous Alcatraz prison and the iconic cable cars that travel along the city's steep slopes. While in San Francisco, be sure to check out the parrots of Telegraph Hill, or stop by a local bakery for some fresh sourdough bread.
One thing to note is that while San Francisco is in California (which would normally make you think warm), it is often quite a bit cooler than cities even just 20 minutes south. Cool wind and fog can roll in quickly, so you should be prepared to bring more than just a t-shirt in case!

If you drive a car into San Francisco, be prepared to either parallel park or pay a premium for a lot.
For parallel parking, you may have to do so on a very steep hill so prepare yourself! For lots, expect to pay about $5-10 for a couple hours, $25 and up for overnight in private lots, and around $50 per night even when you are a guest at a major hotel.
Call their tourist info number and they may be able to help you find a hotel. My friends and I went without reserving a room anywhere, and they were able to point us to a hotel in a great location with at a reasonable cost.
