Travel Tips from people who've been to Durango
Silverton/Durango Narrow Guage Railroad is a must do!. If you have a group with multiple drivers one set can drive to Silverton and the other ride the train. Then swap and do the ooposite on the way back to save money on the train tickets. If you don't mind a little soot the open Gondala cars are the best for seeing as much incredible Rockies scenery as possible.
The best thing to do in Durango is take the coal train (Durango-Silverton line). They have open cars that provide a view of the mountains that would be hard to achieve without hiking. It's also pretty cool if you're like me and love train rides. Just remember to wear a hat if you ride the open cars as the coal dust tends to blow in from time to time.
A beautiful place...the big attraction here is Mesa Verde where you can see excellent exaples of native american cliff dwellings (cave like houses carved into the side of high cliffs). Its an amazing place and well worth the trip. You can also go whitewater rafting and there are great horseback riding trips available. Lots to do!!!
