Driving the Florida Keys from Miami to Key West can be really boring and slow-going if you are simply intent on getting to your destination. Most of the road is two-lane, so if you get stuck behind a camper or a series of campers, you can get pretty frustrated. HOWEVER, if you take your time and take frequent stops to explore the many small hamlets along the way, you will develop and appreciation for a very unique lifestyle: quiet, isolated and almost other-worldly. The big keys like Largo and Key West are NOTHING like the small towns on the lesser-known keys. The best times to go are during the winter (also the worst since this is snowbird season!). Perhaps with the high gas prices people will be less inclined to pack the campers and you will on the road with a flock of Fits and Priuses instead.
