Chicago People & Culture
Chicago, Illinois, United States Go to the Museum of Science and Industry and see the Fairy Castle. It is a huge, 7 ft. tall, doll house that was created by a very wealthy woman in the 1920s. It includes such things as miniature versions of contemporary literature, signed by the authors, tiny ancient artifacts, and a tiny pistol that actually shoots. It's amazing, but try to go at a time when few people are there. Good tip? (0) Chicago, Illinois, United States Come in June/July!!! Best weather (not too hot) and lots of festivals (Blues fest, taste of Chicago, concerts-all free in Grand park) and neighborhood festivals. If you want to go to the beach, try North beach for lots of Volleyball and specially on weekend lots of people. If you'd like it a little more quiet, go to Oak beach at the end of the shopping part of Michigan Ave. (north)
For bars, restaurants and cafes go to Old town and Wriggleyville.
And of course check out Wrigley Field, the 2nd oldest baseball stadium of the world (after Boston). The games there are known for the best atmosphere!!!! Go Cubbies!!!!!!! Good tip? (0) Chicago, Illinois, United States Wear comfortable shoes. The airport is huge. You may have to do some running. Sunny but chilly...good food...nice people. Good tip? (0) Chicago, Illinois, United States Shop the Millionaire's Mile (aka magnificient mile) in January. You'll get some AMAZING deals at ritzy stores and see people dressed to the hilt. (Fur coats, fur hats, limos... the whole nine yards) It's crazy. Every year we do a women's weekend in January and the sales are fantastic! If we didn't go then, there is no way I could afford to shop there. However Filene's basement is a great store to shop at anytime! Great deals all the time! (I got boots that were $125 for $19!!!) Good tip? (0) Chicago, Illinois, United States Chicago has some the best events you can look for. They have everything you could want. Let it be sports (all major teams) to nature to museums to plays. If you are going to go for a week they do sell this thing called "City Pass" that gets you into the Field, Science and Industry, Shed, Planetarium, and the Sear tower for about 60 dollars I beleive (Field alone is normally $17). Also if you are staying down town and want to save some money their transit system is really good once you figure out how to use it. Most people are very willing to help you find where you need to go though. The City also has a CTA pass good for a day unlimited rides via bus, loop, or subway for $5. You cant bet it! Good tip? Good tip? (0) Prairie Shores, Illinois, United States THIS IS HOME BASE where I live. From my window I see unobstructed downtown Chicago including Sears Tower, Lake Michigan and the sailboats and some large freighters in the summer, and U.S. Cellular Field home of the 2005 World Series Champion Chicago White Sox (and the fireworks show every Saturday night). This is also a great spot to watch the July 4th Fireworks from the lakefront, and the annual August Air Water Show. Ample transportation runs through here via busses, elevated trains, cabs, and the commuter electric trains. This area is located in historic Bronzesville, the old Black mecca of Chicago comparative to New York's Harlem. The premier convention center of the Midwest is located here, McCormick Place. The McCormick Place Hyatt is one of the best hotels in the city. There is an excellent soul food restaurant here near 47th Street, and a poetry/comedy club nearby. The Harold Washington Cultural Center is a media showcase. The third largest parade in the U.S. is held here every summer, just before school reconvenes ... the Bud Billiken Back-To-School Parade, where the Mayor, Barack Obama, Jesse Jackson, and notables like Don King, Senator Dick Durbin, various Congressman, and movie stars and singers have marched, including President Harry Truman and Martin Luther King. The location just East of where I live will be the site of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Village, when Chicago hosts The Games! TIPS: Be extremely street-wise while here, as in any urban area. Try the barbeque from Mississippi Rick's, fried chicken from Harold's, and fish from J J. DON'T act like a tourist. Good tip? (0) Chicago, Illinois, United States Well Chicago is my favorite city, there is so much culture there and the buildings are great, the food is great and the whole atmosphere is what i love. Good tip? (0) Chicago, Illinois, United States Culture is the key in that city, enjoy it! Good tip? (0) Chicago, Illinois, United States Chicago est une ville très intéressante à visiter ! Le mélange des cultures, la différence architecturale entre certains quartiers, les grands magasins...je ne savais plus où donner de la tête ! ! ! Good tip? (0) Chicago, Illinois, United States The Taste of Chicago! Every summer most the restaurants around town participate in a festival of food and music along the shore or Lake Michigan...dont miss it! Good tip? (0) Chicago, Illinois, United States Chicago is a wonderful city with many things to see and do but if you are fortunate enough to be there in late May-early June you must go to the Chicago Blues Festival. It's usually held in Grant Park on 5- 6 stages. The best Blues men from around the world are there. If you enjoy the Blues it's a must see event, at least once in your life.
If your in Chicago and the festival isn't going on you can still get great Blues music on the South Side. There are an abundance of Blues Clubs, my personal favorite is Buddy Guy's Legends on South Wabash Ave. If your lucky you may even catch Buddy there. Eric Clapton said Buddy is the finest guitarist alive and for what its worth, I agree. Good tip? (0) Chicago, Illinois, United States Jack's Bar and Grill: After Theatre Hangout Jack's Bar and Grill is also connected to 404 Wine Bar. Although the two taverns are run by the same owner they are decidedly different pubs. Jack's is a tavern that specializes in hearty home cooking, sports and loud music. It's always crowded on the weekends - so you may have to fight for a table. They offer outdoor seating in the summer out back and feature the best damn chicken pot pie in the winter. The chicken pot pie is so popular that they often run out of it on a daily basis. It's huge. I recommend splitting it with a friend. The nice thing is you can order off the 404 Wine Bar menu even if you're seated in Jack's. Phone: (773) 404-5886 Address: 2856 N Southport Ave Directions: Located a block South of the Athenaeum Theatre. (0) Chicago, Illinois, United States The Hothouse: World Beat The Hothouse is a great spot to see some live World music. Conveniently located in the South Loop, parking usually isn't a problem. The space is large - and they sometimes feature local art in the back room. They offer plenty of tables to sit back, relax, sip a drink and listen to the featured band every evening. Or put on your dancing shoes and shake it on the dance floor. The entertainment changes nightly so check out their calendar to see what in the world they're playing tonight. We recently enjoyed the monthly Brazilian Samba night featuring a live Samba band and costumed Carnivale dancers. They also offered free Samba lessons during each of the band's breaks. Phone: 312-362-9707 Address: 31 E. Balbo Website: http://www.hothouse.net/ Good tip? (0) Chicago, Illinois, United States Ravinia Festival Every Summer Ravina opens it's doors to the annual outdoor music festival. It's located north of the city - a relatively short train ride from downtown. The festival attracts a wide variety of musical acts, showcasing everything from classical to salsa. Look out for regulars ( crowd favorites) such as Lyle Lovett and Tony Bennett. Everyone from the Gypsy Kings to the B-52s, Norah Jones to the Beach Boys has played here. The lawn seats are actually a large park and although you can't see the musical acts from here the acoustics are great so bring a picnic, spread out your blanket and listen to melodies under the stars. People will come early and set up tents with china, crystal and candelabras. You think I'm kidding? So did I until I saw it with my own eyes. You can pack your own picnic dinner or buy it there (although food and drink there is on the expensive side). AND you are allowed to bring in and consume alcoholic beverages out in the open here. Lawn tickets run $10 to $15 US. If you prefer an unobstructed view of the visiting artists buy pavilion tickets (starting at $45 US) for an assigned seat with a view. Just be aware that food isn't allowed in the pavilion. The bigger name acts sell out so buy your tickets early. And if you’re attending a popular concert and have lawn seats I recommend sending at least one member of your party up to the park early to stake out a primo spot on the lawn. Cell phones don’t always get the best reception up here so you might want to bring an umbrella or other identifiable marker for your friends to find you as the park is large. Parking is available for a fee if you want to drive up. But it’s so easy to hop on the Metra. Take the North Line to Ravinia Park from one of three easy stops in Chicago: Downtown (Madison Canal), Ravenswood (Lawrence and Ravenswood) or Rogers Park. You can ride the “Ravinia Special” for $5 US RT. The train drops you off right at the park gates and picks you up shortly after the concert ends. A favorite Chicago event! A friend of mine likes to call it a clean New York. I think it is alot more than that. It is situated right on Lake Michigan so a visit to chicago should include a walk or bike ride(even a game of volleyball) in one of the cities many parks. There is also a nice zoo and kind of a dodgy zoo. I'll let ya figure that one out on your own. Make sure to see some comedy when in Chicago good palces for that are Nauance theater, IO, and Second City. If you can find a way to go to a cubs game you you gotta take it. It's the best beer garden in Chicago. There is no need to dress up in this city but always an excuse to drink. oh, and if you get th lonely planet for chicago ignore pretty much everything in it completely especially the one about a polka bar off of the orange line. I talked some of my friends into going out there... well... the Orange line is not open all night and you will find yourself wandering around Midway airport and abandoned factories... and if you are a woman under 45 in the polka bar they will assume you are a prostitute... Don't let your guy friends think they are pimps... Good tip? (0) Prairie Shores, Illinois, United States THIS IS HOME BASE where I live. (0) Chicago, Illinois, United States Always use the loop to go around Chicago when driving through the city. We were on the loop around 3:00am. The loop allows you lots of great views of the City without the traffic. Since it was dark we got to see some Great views of the city's lights. It was really pretty. The Sears tower was impressive also. The Chicago Loop also travels near the City's transit system "above ground subways". It was neat to see the people waiting for a subway. You can take anything you can carry on one. One guy was carrying his bike =] Good tip? (0) Chicago, Illinois, United States Ride your bike on Lake Michigam, stop at the driving range, at the Zoo and have a L. Lemondade at the Pier... Good tip? (0) Chicago, Illinois, United States Go down to US CELLULAR FIELD and root for the only real Chicago team the WHITE SOX!! Good tip? (+1) Chicago, Illinois, United States You wanna visit Chicago downtown out of the summer season.., just carry with yourself an umbrella, pair of clothes, an impregnated jacket and a hat, as the weather right there might change all of the time into windy, rainy and real freeze into just couple of hours.. I cannot put my finger on it, whether it be the endless traffic, the fact that I paid to go to the top of the Sears tower and couldn't see a thing, or that O'Hare airport is the worst in the country. Their transit system is nice. The downtown area is nice if you take a river tour of the city you'll have fun. Otherwise chicago, in my opinion, is a hole. Good tip? (0) Chicago, Illinois, United States Chicago is freezing in the winter, so pack your thermals. The city is picturesque lots of photo opportunities. The airport is enourmous Good tip?
