There seem to be alot of police when leaving wichita heading South

The mass transit system in Lawrence is definitely improving (http://www.lawrencetransit.org/routemap.shtml) -- if you transfer to another bus, it is cheaper to buy an all-day pass.

Grab a "Hawk Sheet" while in this city to find specials at the local restaurants, bars/clubs, and other places of business -- the sheets are bright yellow in color and are near downtown lawrence (try the Dillions store on 6th Street if all else fails; they are by the only entrance).

There's a history museum, which is a little boring, historic homes, and the University of Kansas among other things. The Lied Center is probably your best choice for entertainment. I also enjoy spending a day at the library either reading or using the computers in the basement (you nead a library card).

There is a nice coffee shop near Borders Book Store in downtown Lawrence (the 1/2 price book store is a better place to buy books although the selection is smaller). The coffee shop in the store is not great (go through the store's coffee shop entrance/exit, cross the street, and you will find a much better coffee shop). Cici's Pizza has a nice pizza buffet too.

we were just traveling through here. there isn't much to see!

The airport is really small so you'll only need to be there an hour before departure if that!

Speed limits are STRICTLY enforced here so be extra careful.
