Travel Tips from people who've been to Maine
There's not much to Isle Au Haut, but if you're looking for something secluded and quiet it's the place for you. You have to take a boat, there is a mail boat that you can take from Stonington but I chose to go through Old Quary. They do kayak rentals and whatnot, but I did the "Hike and Bike" Isle Au Haut. It gets you over to the island and if you want you rent a bike to take over with you. I definitely would reccommend renting or taking a bike, you don't get to see too much without and there is a beautiful spot that is (I'm pretty sure) on the eastern side that is too far to walk to and get back during a day tip. Worth a trip, though I have been told that the black flies can be very bad at times so you may want to check on that before hand. Good tip? (0) This little town one peninsula up from Ellsworth and the access to Bar Harbor is home to the Schoodic section of Acadia National Park. Few visitors to Acadia end up visiting the Schoodic section, but it's worth the drive. It's clean, scenic and provides outstanding views to Bar Harbor and Cadillac Montain. Winter Harbor itself is a small town with a few decent restaurants. While we were there in June, 2006, there was a bald eagle who came to hang out in the harbor at low tide for several hours. You can buy fresh lobsters there and it's a peaceful place. Visit the Grindstone Neck section of town to see some unbelievably gorgeous old mansions lining the waterfront and with fantastic views of Bar Harbor. Good tip? (0) Bridgton pizza does great work and they deliver, though they get a bit cranky if you make them go too far. If you have kids, consider a summer in Bridgton and send the kids to camp. Winona Camps for Boys is one of the best boys' camps in the world and is situated on Moose Pond. Uncle Al and Aunt Michelle (the camp directors) run an excellent camp for children from 7 through 16. Many campers enjoy it so much that they stay on as staff. Right across the pond is Wyonegonic Camp for Girls. The outdoors around Bridgton are magnificent. The top of Pleasant Mountain is a great place to watch 4th of July fireworks over Moose Pond. Good tip? (0) Recent Updates for Maine
