Travel Tips from people who've been to Portland
For years we loved going to Gilbert's Chowder House on Commercial STreet. There's plenty of places to park down there and the chowder was award-winning. The last couple of times we've gone, however, the place was really looking run down. the chowder was still tasty, but they need to do some sprucing up. The chair covers were ripped and the place just seemed dirty. We won't go back unless we find out it's been renovated.
No visit to Maine is complete without a visit to the Portland Head Light - an amazingly beautiful lighthouse off the coast. Spend some time downtown at the fresh market. If time permits, travel a couple of hours south to Kittery, Maine, on the border of New Hampshire. There are great outlets for shopping and a great road side stand near the outlets with the best New England Clam Chowder and fried clams that I've ever tasted.
There's lots of young adults (artists, musicians, outdoors people, etc) so smile brightly and don't be shy. There's great dining and live music downtown, and a wonderful area called Old Portland where you can find cobble stone streets, good food, and shops.
