When I was in NYC for New Years my brother, my buddy and I all stayed in the Bronx at the Howard Johnson located at 1922 Boston Road. This is maybe one of the most inexpensive chain hotels in the area, and even though it's in a run-down part of town, it didn't seem overly dangerous to me when I was there. Also, the hotel was located right along the #2 and #3 train line and across the street from the West Farms/East Tremont station, so it was easy to get into Manhattan...it's a bit of a ride on the train but not that bad. So if you're planning a trip to NYC and dont have 300 a night for a hotel, but you want your own bathroom, I recommend looking at the Howard Johnson in the Bronx. The Bronx itself is kinda neat, too, alot of history there, and of course the Bronx Zoo and the Hub. Don't be scared of the reputation, and check it out!
