Asheville is a comfortable liberal pocket in conservative North Carolina. Located in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, it is full of free sprited types and is considered a bit of a hippy town.
The Biltmore Estate is probably the main attraction in town. Built at the end of the 19th century, it looks like a European chateau and has over 250 rooms in a building that sprawls over 8,000 acres. Especially impressive around Christmas, this is an American castle.

A very large, chateau style, mansion built by the railroad tycoon Vanderbilt family. Extensive grounds with flower gardens, vinyard, wine tasting, food, as well as the tour of this gorgeous mansion (complete with hundreds of rooms, its own swimming pools, bowling alley, conservatory, study, etc. Historic and beautiful!
Go in the spring time to see the flowers in bloom. Try christmas to see the mansion decorated for the season.
Outside the grounds is historic Biltmore village.
the asheville brewing and pizza company- a must stop whenever we visit. incredible brick oven pizza and hand crafted micro brews. this place is a converted twin movie teatre. one side shows second run movies for $4. the other side has been turned into an arcade. the whole place is muraled by a local artist with predominant star wars and lord of the rings themes. very cool place indeed!
