River House Motel

We had been so focused on eating that we didn't book a hotel room. After we were fully sated we started talking to the owner of the restaurant. She suggested the River House, just down the street, and one of the few hotels in town on the water. Florence is slightly inland because of the Dunes State Park so the only waterfront properties are on the Suislaw River. The hotel is not luxurious by any means, but it was relatively clean and the property manager was friendly and very helpful. When I was unable to connect to the internet in our room, she allowed me to come behind the desk and use her computer. I am sure there are better hotels in the city, but the River House was fine, considering our situation.

Unique Qualities: Indoor pool, no smoking, no pets, on the Suislaw River.

Beachcomber Tavern

After our wonderful dinner we headed into a local bar for a drink before retiring to our hotel. The Old Town was dead, spare the Beachcomber Tavern. The drinks were cheap, college football played on the televisions and locals were quite a site. It's the kind of place where the bartender knows everyone and the kitchen serves up fried bar food. Definitely off the beaten path and an amusing experience. The people watching alone makes it worth while!
