One of the country's most educated and liberal cities, Austin is also considered the Live Music Capital of the World.  It's the host to name-grabbing events such as the Austin City Limit Festival and  South by Southwest (SXSW).  Alternatively,  on any given night you'll find a wide range of local musicians playing at various venues across town.  Austin nightlife is just as active, thanks to the large and active student population.  From low-key breweries and pubs to sophisticated wine bars with the food to match, you'll find the style and vibe you're looking for to match your tastes and preferences.

Go down to the Congress bridge in the evening and watch the bats leave their colonies at dusk by their thousand. Don't miss this if you are in Austin.

Never sing the Aggie War Hymn on Sixth Street at midnight on a weekend, especially during football season.

You MUST try The Salt Lick Barbecue in Driftwood, about 20 miles west of Austin. It is worth the drive and the inevitable wait. It is BYOB and there is outdoor seating and occasional live music. If the line is long I suggest getting your food to go and eating outside on the picnic tables, as this is what many of the locals do and you can meet great people while enjoying even better food.
