Alexandria is a city in Virginia, but is located just outside Washington D.C., and is easily accessible from the D.C. airports.   It may make for a good staging point to visit D.C. as well.

Alexandria has a nice historic Old Town center, where you can see a number of historic buildings, some dating back to the 18th century.  The George Washington Masonic Memorial is more modern, but this building was designed to look like the Lighthouse of Alexandria (Egypt).
Travel Tips from people who've been to Alexandria
Public transit is probably the best way to get around Alexandria.  The King Street metro station connects the city with the surrounding area, and within Alexandria, the DASH bus is very convenient.  The new King Street Trolley might be interesting too!

Make sure you check out the salads at Cosi on the corner of N Washington and King St in Old Town Alexanderia. Get the Cosi signature salad and definitely try the fresh bread!
