You will probably visit Charlottesville as part of a trip to see Thomas Jefferson's former home, Monticello. Charlottesville is worth a visit in its own right, an attractive historic downtown area with some great shops and  a safe pedestrianised zone. There are some great ice cream parlours.

Charlottesville is a great city.  It's a college town so it's very lively.  Though it's in the south and not a huge city, it's very diverse.  The president's houses are a must see, especially Jefferson's.

Traffic can be very heavy.  There is only one main road that goes through town. Definitely go downtown. It's a great place for New Year's Eve - they have a well-established First Night celebration.
