People in Virginia
Virginia Beach, Virginia, United States
Virginia Beach is situated three and a half hours car drive south from Washington DC and about an hour north of the Virginia and North Carolina state borders. The city is relatively small and has no public transportation, so driving is the best way to get around. However, the streets are not built in perpendicular fashion and street names tend to repeat themselves or vary by "drive," "street' or circle." Streets also tend to loop around. All this however, is a throwback to the English system if you have experienced London or other cities. After all, Virginia was the first English colony in America that thrived. The food is "American", but I found a great Japanese place not far from where I lived. The owners are Chinese but the chefs are Korean. I know the owners through their daughter who attended the same church as I did. You can also find typical "Southern" food, also known as the Golden Corral and Waffle House, also known as places where you can feel your arteries harden as you eat. There is the beach, of course, and the Broadwalk. However, the hotels and restaurants tend to be seasonal there as winter in Virginia Beach brings rainstorms and the occasional snow flurry. Temperatures can drop down to 40F/ 5C. Virginia Beach itself has plenty of activities during the summer, but for quieter beaches, head just south. Nestled between Little Creek and Virginia Beach is a much quieter area with houses instead of hotels on the Broadwalk. The people there are all government workers of some sort, whether NASA at Langley to the north, Navy personnel at Norfolk, Oceana, or Little Creek, or Air Force (also at Langley), or retirees from the government. People tend to be friendly but busy and the pace is much slower compared to other cities.

Virginia Beach, Virginia, United States
Virginia Beach, or VB as natives call it, is a great vacation spot for some good beach time and family fun. Many people go to the Strip where most tourists congregate but if it is still around, seek out Sandbridge, a beach where most locals go and is far less crowded. Don't forget to check out 17th St. Surf Shop, a must for any surfer who wants to get some cool gear from the East Coast. Looking for good chicken wings? If you are brave, try the Suicide Chicken Wings at Wing King in VB.

Blacksburg, Virginia, United States
Lived in Blacksburg for 5 years. The people are friendly and the food is great. Highly recommend the nacho fries at the Rivermill, gyros at Souvlaki, pizza at PKs. I also recommend taking a drive to the Homeplace in Catawba. It will be a long wait but well worth it with all you can eat country cooking, down to the lemonade and iced tea.

Virginia Culture
Norfolk, Virginia, United States
Most locals are military personnel or those with strong ties to military culture. You will see MP vehicles on patrol as well as city police. If you don't have a military background, be prepared to be lost by the acronyms used in their lingo.Travel Military Hwy. Visit 17th Street surf shop.

Virginia Sports
Shenandoah, Virginia, United States
Beautiful scenes, especially in fall. The best way to see the national park is by car. It's a good idea to stop for a few hours and to go hiking in the woods. More to the south of the park you can even rent horses.

Arlington, Virginia, United States
Arlington National Cemetary is humbling. To see all those tombstones and realize how many men and women have died for our country.... If you go- you HAVE to see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It's worth the hike and the wait--no matter what the temperature or weather.

Yorktown, Virginia, United States
Yorktown is a historic place. Cornwallis and battles and all that. Visit the museum!

Be sure to walk in the park along the river. It's a great place for a family gathering, cooking out, fishing off the rocks... or if you walk a little further down, you can walk on the beach.

Across the river is Gloucester Point. There is a beach there as well. There is also a pier from which to fish. Be sure you have a fishing license either place.

Be sure to have bug repellent.

Alexandria, Virginia, United States
We visited Alexandria on our visit to Egypt. Regrettably, we could not go to the central market area because out guide said it was too dangerous. Apparently, Alexandria is a hotbed for anti-government Muslim activists and the fear that the will kidnap tourists is high. One the positive side, we stayed in an oceanfront hotel and the views across the Mediterranean were spectacular. The new library is awesome. Every meal we had was good...Egyptian food revolves around a lot of grilled meats and all those dishes one associates with the Middle East: fabulous cured olives, babaghanoush, deep-fried falafels with tahini sauce, etc. The icea cream in all of Egypt is good, but it is especially good in Alexandria and Cairo (they use tradional Italian recipes from before WW II. By the way, if you are a WWII buff, El Alamein is nearby and a visit to the Allied and to the German cementeries is a definite MUST!
