Uruguay

One of the smallest countries in South America, Uruguay is a pleasant and laid back country that is primarily known for its beaches, the most popular ones located in Montevideo – the country’s capital and at Punta Del Este. These beaches are excellent and are good enough to attract many vacationers from the neighboring countries of Argentina and Brazil.

Montevideo is Uruguay's only major city and is noted for its sophistication and diversity.  It has a nice collection of restaurants in the Mercado del Puerto, where you can munch on some huge steaks.  You can also check out the ranches in the countryside that raise the cattle.

In additional, the Portuguese influences are evident throughout the country.  One example is the charming 17th century colonial town of  Colonia del Sacramento.

Punta del Este, Eastern Uruguay, Uruguay
Go to the beach at Bikini, one of the most exclusive spots with lots of pretty young people. The place it's amazing at the sunset!
A great little hostel in a tiny nice town: Altena Youth Hostel. Very cozy and equally as good for rainy days of reading and sunny days and going to the beach.
Chuy, Eastern Uruguay, Uruguay
the extreme south of Brazil.

If you travel to these town next to Punta del Este you have to eat at "La Huella", a very good restaurant next to the sea.
Punta del Este, Eastern Uruguay, Uruguay
Excelente lugar para veranear, muchas opciones. Para grandes y chicos. Muy buenos hoteles, restaurantes, boliches (tequila is a must). Las playas son de nivel medio. Mejor epoca del 26/12 al 10/01.

Beautiful old village, not far from Buenos Aires. There is awesome Four Seasons Golf Resort!

Chuy, Eastern Uruguay, Uruguay
Pretty cool that one side of the street is Brazil and the other, Uruguay. Different currencies and languages. Very easy to get around Uruguay from there, not so easy to get through Brazil, maybe easy actually, but definitly not cheap.
Punta del Este, Eastern Uruguay, Uruguay
stayed at 1979 Hostel. Nice views, but a case of having it all but not the atmosphere. Maybe it is just that it was off season. Punta still one of the most beautiful beachy places I have been, but keep in mind during off season a lot of buisnesses shut for renovations. Great side trip if visiting Buenos Aires.

hire a moto and drive arround colonia! it´s great:-)
Piriapolis, Eastern Uruguay, Uruguay
Piriapolis Uruguay is a quiet spot to get away from the busy Punta del Este which is only about 30 minutes away by car. Located on the Plata River you will have a great view of a beautiful sunset where the people stop to applaud and marvel it's beauty every evening. It's much cheaper than staying in Punta del Este. If you care to enjoy the nightlife be sure to visit La Rinconada. But don't go too early the party doesn't get started until 12am to 1am. Be sure to go to the top of the hill and order a chivito while watching the sun set one evening. If you're looking for a more quiet, relaxed, cheaper time at the beach but still close to the wildness of Punta del Este, this is a perfect location.
Montevideo, Montevideo & Surroundings, Uruguay
if you ever go to montevideo you gotta go see the sunset from "canteras del parque rodo"... just do not forget to buy some "biscochos" before you go there and it's also a good oportunity to try mate... that's if you go in winter time, if you go during the summer just buy beer... my recomedation: "patricia"
Rocha, Eastern Uruguay, Uruguay
Chuy, Eastern Uruguay, Uruguay
Carmelo, Western Uruguay, Uruguay
Turned out to be a boring place, go ahead and skip it.

Colonia del Sacramento, Western Uruguay, Uruguay
It is an amazing old village (or little town) with stone made narrow streets, vintage cars (it is a world heritage site). Food is just superb and there are some really good art galleries with unique articles (and they are really inexpensive). Loved the place.. I would rate it as one of the "must see" in Uruguay.
Montevideo, Montevideo & Surroundings, Uruguay
The "cubierto" (service surchage) at the steakhouses is ridiculous. Enquire about this before choosing a restaurant. It is for the breadsticks and cutlery and would be charged even if you left the breadsticks and ate with your bare hands, not that you would. But they do not inform you of it, you just get a nasty surprise on the cheque.
Punta del Diablo, Uruguay
Playa Grande is located at only a 20 minute walk away from town, and it's an spectacular wide peaceful beach. It's less windy than most of the beaches nearby town and has one of the greatest views I've seen in my life.
Colon, Montevideo & Surroundings, Uruguay
Visit in February when the "Murgas" sing all night at the main plaza, all dressed up and with painted faces
Termas del Arapey, Western Uruguay, Uruguay
Bring some fishing tackle and get your own dinner by the Arapey river. Grills and firewood are provided by the Park
Maldonado, Eastern Uruguay, Uruguay
Maldonado is not turistic at all, but there you can actually see the people that makes Punta del Este a beautifull city. There are many small shops. and the people is very friendly
Paysandu, Western Uruguay, Uruguay
This city only has two things: The Chaja and Los Iracundos Their beer sucks, their basketball team is bad, and their Hot spring baths are cold. Go to SALTO for a Good time!!
Itapebi, Western Uruguay, Uruguay
Best Lamb BBQ I can remember. Killed the sheep right in front of me and gutted cooked etc. in record time. Ride horses and try racing the tame Rheas (ostriches)
Montevideo, Montevideo & Surroundings, Uruguay
In Montevideo, don't miss out on the Mercado del Puerto, yummy meats and apply cider and funny locals at the bars make for a colorful day.
Montevideo, Montevideo & Surroundings, Uruguay
Don't forget to visit the eastern Uruguay. Punta del Diablo is a delightful fishing village. You'll cross more young and hippies people than fishermen. A very nice and special place.
Montevideo, Montevideo & Surroundings, Uruguay
nice city, great people working in the hostels, not much going when we were there and the city tour by bus not the best thing i have ever done.
Rivera, Western Uruguay, Uruguay
Montevideo, Montevideo & Surroundings, Uruguay
When you park on the streets in the cities, there will usually be a man there who "watches the cars". Tip him a little when you return to your car for the favour. He may get angry if you don't.
Maldonado, Eastern Uruguay, Uruguay
Rivera, Western Uruguay, Uruguay
Check out all the tax free shops in the area!
Durazno, Eastern Uruguay, Uruguay
Pan y vino, one of the best restaurants ever! You'll find it from the buss station.
Montevideo, Montevideo & Surroundings, Uruguay
amazing beaches! great weather and lovely food, I just loved this place
Montevideo, Montevideo & Surroundings, Uruguay
Montevideo is a very nice place to know. Locals are very friendly and traditionals/conservatives. They love "mate" (local infusion) and they are the best drinkers of this in all South America. You should go to "mercado del puerto" on a Saturday or Sunday noon to see a nice local "feria" and enjoy many diferent restaurants specialiced in "parrilla" (barbaque), while enjoying the Murgas (local carnival music). Don´t forget to try "medio y medio". You should go to the "Tristan Narvaja Feria" to see a very traditional market in the street where you can buy almost everything used new.
Colonia del Sacramento, Western Uruguay, Uruguay
You can do a great visit to Colonia in just one day. You should not forget to know the "Estancia Anchorena" near to the city. It´s a fantastic ranch where to can have a very nice tour to know the history of the place, know the "Faro" and the house that was donated from the onwners to be a resting house for the presidential family.
