Travel Tips from people who've been to Montevideo & Surroundings
recommend visiting the old port area in particular the mercado del puerto best atmosphere is usually saturday when the locals let the hair down also very good for arts and crafts as the area is a tourist hotspot avoid going when a cruise ships in a prices increase substanually. recommend roldos and the outside seated restraunts for better service also for quieter beaches head further out on the rambla past carrasco where the beaches are generally quieter although still white and sandy and generally cleaner. For the perfect sunrise go to any beach cuidad del costa  although to see perfect sunset head on the rambla to the w lounge and amusement park area . however goto a bay in punta for the perfect sunset in uruguay Also be aware that all taxis should carry a day and night rate in the back check this against the meter because they do try it on.
generally the uruguayans are very friendly and thoroughly recommend a visit the local wine medio y medio is delicious

Montevideo is a very nice place to know. Locals are very friendly and traditionals/conservatives. They love "mate" (local infusion) and they are the best drinkers of this in all South America. You should go to "mercado del puerto" on a Saturday or Sunday noon to see a nice local "feria" and enjoy many diferent restaurants specialiced in "parrilla" (barbaque), while enjoying the Murgas (local carnival music). Don´t forget to try "medio y medio". You should go to the "Tristan Narvaja Feria" to see a very traditional market in the street where you can buy almost everything used & new.

Downtown there are some bars that could be interesting such as "El Pony Pisador" and "Bar Fun Fun", the last one is very famous and you must visit, it has more than 100 years.
The main points are in the area of Pocitos, so if you want to hang out at night, you should go there. One other interesting option and also famous one is the "Tabaré Bar" which also have more than 100 years.
