Venezuela

Among the most urbanized countries in Latin America, Venezuela also has the most diverse landscapes. From the Andes highlands in the northeastern part of the country, to the Amazon, to the rolling llanos (an extensive plain that stretches forever), to a warm tropical climate on the Caribbean coast. Venezuela’s terrain shifts form from region to region. The wildlife also, is equally varied, among which include the massive anaconda, the giant anteater, the capybara (the world’s largest rodent), the Boto, the largest river dolphin, jaguars, manatees, crocodiles and many other species. In fact, many of these creatures are endemic to their region. Angel Fall’s, the world’s highest waterfall can be found here.  It is so tall that the water never flows to the ground, dispersing midway down into a fine mist that gently rains down and away into the wind. Lake Maracaibo, is the largest lake in South America and is one of the second oldest lakes on earth. Caracas, the country’s capital, is very cosmopolitan, but also features a number of interesting sites. The Central University of Venezuela, declared a world heritage site, is considered a masterpiece in modern architecture. The Casa Natal de Bolivar is a museum that features period weapons and uniforms, and is styled in the original colonial flavour. From jungle to sun, urban life to fresh mountain air, Venezuela offers boundless opportunities of exploration and adventure.

Canaima National Park is a very beautiful place on earth! You reach it by taking a plane from Ciudad Bolivar. After approx. 1 houd you land at Canaima Airport. A truck takes you to the boat. And after a 4,5 hour boat..

Caracas, Capital, Venezuela
Not nearly as scary as people made out, but we did stick with the safety do's and don't's in our guidebook so maybe that is why. We found it had an excellent public transportation system.

An absolute must, this city is facinating. You must try one of the local cafe's and try a veg/fruit smoothie, very bizaare! Great architecture too. But do exactly what you tour guide tells you and never leave his sight!

Caracas has delicious Caribbean cuisine in downtown Caracas. The weather is just fabulous and people are very friendly. Get versed in Venezuelan politcs, history and culture prior to traveling there so you can understand and engage in interesting conversation.

Merida, Andean, Venezuela

Go hiking in the nearby mountains, it's really fun. Also, if you have a chance to go to the small mountain village of La Puerta, do it, it's really quaint and not touristy.

Catia La Mar, Capital, Venezuela
I really liked this town on the Venezuelan coast. There are some really great restaurants that overlook the Caribbean and have a great Latin American beat at night. Also, check out some of the ice cream shops in the area, they seemed so much better than in the States!

Trujillo, Andean, Venezuela
There isn't a lot to see in this small town; however, you have to go to the giant statue "Virgen de la Paz" on the mountain. You can climb all the way to the top and you have an amazing view of the valley and town. Also, try out the old town, it looks like a picture out of a book.

Isla de Margarita, Insular Region, Venezuela
Isla de Margharita is a relaxing place to go after doing hard travel around South America. Spend a little more than normal and stay somewhere really nice as it is worth it. It is good to have a pool to go back to after a day on the beach as it is still hot in the evenings. Just remember to duck when the bats come swooping down for a drink of fresh water just after dark!
