Merida is a city located in the heart of the Venezuelan Andes, surrounded by mountains over 4,000 m, with glaciers, lakes, streams and rivers,. The city is located at 1,600 m. and has a temperate-mountain climate. Merida is known for being a busy university city. Officially called Santiago de los Caballeros de Mérida, Merida is situated in western Venezuela, in the valley of the Chama river at the foot of the magnificent Sierra Nevada and Sierra La Culata mountains. Pico Bolívar, the highest peak in Venezuela is located here. The mountain can be reached by the highest cable car in the world, the Mérida Cable Car, which is also one of the major attractions in the city. For those looking for excitement there are also several tour agencies offering whitewater rafting around Merida. Founded in 1558, Mérida is rich in history. The Old Quarter is the heart of the city with Spanish Colonial style buildings and avenues. One of the greenest cities in Venezuela, Mérida has numerous public squares and parks, Plaza Bolivar being the main square in the city. Many concerts in Mérida take place in Plaza Bolivar. You can visit Merida's zoo, aquarium or botanical gardens as well. The city has also many museums and centers for scientific research, the CIDA Astronomical Observatory being the most remarkable of them. The culture in Mérida is highly influenced by the Andean folklore and the inhabitants of the city are well aware of their cultural background and have a peaceful way of life. Numerous religious festivals are celebrated in the city during the national holidays. The easiest way to travel to Merida is by air. Flights to Mérida arrive at the Aeropuerto Alberto Carnevali which receives domestic flights from the Capital Caracas. There are good highway and road connections from other cities in Venezuela. The city has an extensive network of cheap buses, trolleybuses and minibuses. Taxis are also easy to find and they are very affordable. The major attractions in the city can be easily toured on foot. Merida is a popular tourism destination and one of the wealthiest cities in Venezuela

En Merida se encuentra el teleferico el mas alto del mundo! En la ultima etapa no ves casi nada, a veces las nubes pero como la altura es muy grande no te sientes muy bien. Cuidado no hay que correr, todo muy despacio... Si algo occure te ponen oxygeno y hay que bajar. Good tip? (+2) Go hiking in the nearby mountains, it's really fun. Also, if you have a chance to go to the small mountain village of La Puerta, do it, it's really quaint and not touristy. Good tip? (+1) wereldrecordhouder ijsjessmaken in de stad: zelf ijs met champigon smaak langste (of was het hoogste??) kabellift ter wereld hoogteziekte als je de lift tot het einde neemt, maar prachtige landschappen vele bureautjes met goedkope parapentevluchten: zeker doen!!!! van hieruit kan je een 5 tal dagen naar los llanos, een van de mooiste streken waar ik ooit ben geweest Good tip?
