if you are traveling on a budget, I recommend taking a Por Puesto along the coast line towards Cumana. Start by going to Puerto la Cruz, then in downtown get a por puesto with destination Santa Fe. On the way to santa Fe you will pass several beaches, Arapito, Vallecito and playa Colorada. Playa Colorada is a very pretty beach with orange colored Sand, therefor the name "colorada".There are several Posadas (bedbreakfast) offering a place to stay, I recommend Posada Nirvana (also known as la Suiza Rita), very good price and very clean, Rita  the owner is very cool and usually sits together with the turists at breakfast to give tips and travel advice. and tell her Melanie said Hi!
