Vietnam

Vietnam is in many ways, what Thailand once was. Vietnam is a beautiful country with spectacular scenery and a rich colourful history. It is a country that has still been able to retain its original charm. Oft photographed, Vietnam’s landmarks are instantly recognizable. Ha Long Bay, a world heritage site, features a network of rounded limestone islands that rise sharply from the sea.  They have been the setting for many movies, paintings and more. Cruises through the region of more than 3000 limestone islets offer an unforgettable experience. A visit to one of the many hill tribes throughout the scenic mountain regions gives you insight into their day to day life. At Dong Hoi, visit the Phong Nha caves, another world heritage site featuring over 65km of caves and underground rivers.  Hue, the former imperial capital and royal residence - once the political, religious and cultural centre of Vietnam - is bound to impress. Within Hue, be sure to see the 17th century Thien Mu Pagoda, an octagonal tower that is among the most famous in the country. Dalat, is a heavily French influenced quaint hill station that was once referred to has “Le Petit Paris.” The Capital, Hanoi, is a much see, including the Old Quarters, and Ho Chi Minh’s former residence. While here, be sure to catch a water puppet performance. The Mekong Delta, is another must see place as you navigate narrow waterways, see local farmhouses and rice patties. Finally, it’s hard to forget Saigon, with its Pagodas, the Opera house museum, the former Presidential Palace, and the communist guerrilla tunnel systems used during the, 'Ten Thousand Day War.'  Visiting Vietnam is like being drawn to a new world of vivid landscapes and new discoveries.  It is said there are more shades of green here than anywhere else on Earth.

Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
Want a beer for only 2000 dong (less than 10 cents)? Yeah who doesn't. Go looking for the street corners littered with kiddie chairs in the old quarter. Great way to have a cool beer for next to nothing and meet fellow travellers seeking out the same thing.
Hoi An, Vietnam
be sure to catch one of the cooking classes. there are several restaurants that offer them and the price might seem a bit high compared to getting your own grub, but it's totally worth it. i learned how to grill fish in banana leaves and make a killer lime, cucumber and squid salad. the best part is you get to eat it all in a cool restaurant when you're done and meet other fun travellers!
Nha Trang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Avoid most hotels listed in LP or other guidebooks. Service and maintenance have gone out the window as westerners flock straight to them. Nha Trang is bursting with US$20-30 rooms and most places dont completely fill up except for Tet and heat waves.
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
the Sofie Metropolie hotel is the best in the city- go for breakfast, it is amazing. Also check out the evening water puppet show.
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
If you want to hike out of Da Lat don't worry about organizing a guide before you go. There are plenty of great locals willing to show you their area and definitely don't miss out on sleeping in the locals houses!
Cu Chi, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
+Check out the Cuchi Tunnels used in the Vietnam war :)
Cu Chi, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
Cu Chi is well worth a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon.) Prepare to get dirty! Very interesting to see the Vietnam war from the Vietnamese point of view- think Americans as 'the enemies'. Very interesting to say the least.
Ha Long, North Vietnam, Vietnam
Beware of rats on boats and make sure u have good weather.
Chau Doc, Mekong Delta, Vietnam
Small Border town in Vietnam that is a common stop for people entering Vietnam via the Mekong river.
Da Nang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
If you fly here, take a $10USD taxi ride to Hoi An.
Cu Chi, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
You need to be very slim to visit the tunnels of Cu Chi, but it is worth a look. Go for it!
Da Nang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Resorts are going up everywhere; the only real reason to visit Da Nang apart from it's close proximity to key war sites for Americans... Hoi An is fab and a close drive...
Lao Cai, North Vietnam-West, Vietnam
It would be a pretty long walk, I imagine, from the train station to the Chinese border. We took a motorcycle taxi. Quick, cheap, convenient.
Ha Long, North Vietnam, Vietnam
As the captain of the boat to stop by at the "Floating Fish Market" out at sea. By fresh seafood and have the crew prepare it for you. The sea-prawn like things are deliciously sweet
Sa Pa, North Vietnam-West, Vietnam
A mountain area in Vietnam, known for there indiginous culture. Great place to do trekking through jungle and rice paddles, with stayover at local houses. Nice climate as well
Ha Long, North Vietnam, Vietnam
The most beautiful region of Vietnam, with some 3000 limestone island. Amazing to stay one a few and relax at your private beach, swim some, jump of rocks, explore the island by a trekking and drink beer deep into the night, when its still warm!
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
If you take a bike with a basket make sure you put the straps around the handle just so no motorcyclist will take it from the basket and go off with it that's what happened with me.
Nha Trang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Stay at the Ana Mandara Resort - it's top notch.
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
Strawling the streets with your lonely planet is nice, but much nicer is finding a local who shows you around. There's always the deal of trusting them, but some of us have the luck to have developed a sence for it. I wandered the streets of Saigon with Mr. Hai who I paid a few dollars a day. After a few days he took me to the district where he lived himself (I think the 7th) and that was quite the experience...nothing special to see, yet so much more to see!
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
The culture in Vietnam is revealed through our cooking. We are an infusion of other as we have been occupied by the Chinese and the French and both is apparent in the food being sold on the streets and the beautiful crafted buildings. The best way to experience a Vietnamese life without having to feel completely as a "foreigner/tourist" than you should join in on the open street stalls for food and make some friends.
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
If you want to taste the best iced coffee ever, go by boat from Cambodia to Vietnam. By the border (where you have to wait quite a bit, they have the best one!!)
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
City itself is pretty typical major city... Check out the war museum, they talk about the American War from their perspective. Take a day tour to the tunnels - truely amazing!
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
When you try to cross the street in Hanoi, try to NOT look at the traffic and just move at a steady pace; do not be hesitant!
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
Fantatic city, the old town is far from airport will need to get a shuttle or taxi there. The city streets are names after the items they make (toys made = toy street ) Go see the Water Puppet Show here get your tickets early as it does sell out and get there early too. Have a beer at the local bars on a little plastic stool about 1 foot off the pavement. Fantastic artists here too paintings can be reproduced of what ever you like a Mona Lisa perhaps?
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
Stay in a government run hotel in the old quarter and you're guaranteed an experience. We stayed in one that ran a steam sauna massage business downstairs...it was a great way to interact with locals and get a full body massage at a fantastically cheap price (less than US$5 for 2 hours plus steam); my partner was propositioned with a cheap ring and sleazy commentary...all hilariously funny if you're open minded...
Hai Long, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Great place to relax and unwind after travelling the rest of the country. Its quieter than some other places, but I thought much better. Beautiful resorts that are cheap cheap cheap! Must try the kite surfing! As with the rest of the country, the locals are warm and friendly.
Nha Trang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Nha Trang is a great city. Find Han Cafe and go on there one day four island tour. If you like great beaches lots of beer, and Karoake on a boat. The trip is about $7 and is a blast.
Cu Chi, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
The tunnels of CuChi are a must do! Go and try to visit a REAL one, not a touristy one: in the real ones you can experience how narrow these tunnels really where!
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
The food here is absolutely delicious... everything... try it at least once.
Sa Pa, North Vietnam-West, Vietnam
It's a bit touristy in Sapa these days, but its still a good place to base yourself for a few days. Explore some of the nearby villages, hire a moped for a few dollars a day and drive up into the mountain passes. You also get some stunning views of Fansipan (the highest peak in Indochina) if the weather is good.
Lang Son, Far North Vietnam, Vietnam
A good place to avoid. This town is the main border crossing from China to Vietnam and is pretty ugly in all respects. Watch out for the minibus touts in particular. Very ugly and bordering on dangerous.
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
Travelling around the city is a good experience. No mass transpo though. You either take a cab, a 'xe om' (motorbike), a 'cyclo' (rickshaw) or walk. Beware though of some drivers. Be sure you negotiate for a rpice firat before you ride, or you'll get ripped off.
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
Surprise your wife with the ff shopping adventure : Hire a motorbike (xe om), travel 1 hour to the small town of Bach Dang, shop for exotic vases.
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
If you're shopping in Bhen Thanh Market, remember to haggle, haggle haggle. Most initial quotations from salesladies are OVERpriced. Pretend to walk away disgusted, they will surely run after you. Then ask for half the price they quoted. Most likely, they'll relent, specially if you are their first customer or their last for the day.
Da Lat, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
very nice (french looking) place with a great choice of vegetables respectively vegetable patchs. the trip by bus to Da Lat is a little bit stressful because of winding and bumpy street and a lot of stops for taking with (working) people.
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
Great place to take in the Vietnamiese culture and great food.
Da Nang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
this city moves at a slower pace. if you like deserted beaches check out china beach... it is a long stretch of beach with golden sand with virtually no one around. apparently the americans were stationed around this area during the vietnam war.
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
this is a beautiful small town which moves at a slower pace. u can visit the ruins of the mi sun temple and take a day trip and visit the nearby island(sorry i forgot the name). best to pack your swimming togs!. of course hanoi is famously for there tailors. u must get a tailored suit/shirts, it is an absolute must. the workmanship and services is excellent and it is at an fraction of the cost back home. word of advice, make sure u have an extra day before u go in for your final fitting as final touches may need to be made.
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
the city is vibrant, noisy and never seems to sleep. walking across the roads is an experience in itself. from here u can visit the chu chu tunnels, mekong delta, wartime musuem(i must warn you the images are quite graphic so be prepared). lot of things to see and do,
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
this is my favourite city. more cultural and the weather is perhaps cooler compared to the south. enjoy walking around the old quarter where u can appreciate the french influenced architecture. try spending a day walking around the city sampling the different foods from the many vendors. hint go to the cathedral and a couple of shops down there is a dumpling shop. this shop is run by an old man and he makes the best dumpling on earth. funny enough he was reluctant to accept my tip!.
Nha Trang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
A paradise. The only place to stay is the Villa Bao Dao just south of the town. Set on it's own peninsula with 270 degree views, this set of three villas echos a long gone era. First floor rooms may get the occaisional cobra.
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
Walking is the best way to get around the central area. Skip the touristy water pupper theatre but do check out the Temple of Literature. Excellent eateries abound in colonial villas and shophouses, ask your conceirge for the latest and greatest. Of course, street fare here, like all of Viet Nam is cheap and tasty.
Phu Quoc, Mekong Delta, Vietnam
If you go in the summer, bring some sunblock cream of course. Diving, fishing, swimming are all possible. Sea life is spectacular.
Cu Chi, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
Be prepared to go underground in quite a crammed and dampy tunnel! Bring lots of water, a fan, a hat and wet tissues!
Nha Trang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Do the Mama Han boat trip. Its a hoot. You'll meet lots of people, eat fantastic food and drink great booze (in a rubber ring in the ocean if you're lucky). Highly recommended. Also, try the Nha Trang Yacht Club for a nice place to hang out in the evening, although when I was there we noticed a sea of rats on the beach underneath the stilts...
Hoi An, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
A very nice city, the nicest of Vietnam. And the typical food of Hoi An the CAO LAU...and WHITE ROSES. Good place to see!
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
Go to the lake early in the morning and watch - and participate in the exercises.
Ninh Binh, Vietnam
In Ninh Binh you will be able to enjoy Tam Coc, a beautiful Halong bay in the rice paddies, not so crowded and very pretty! Get a motorbike, and spend a few days around the gorgeous landscapes!
Hoi An, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Fantastic city... if you like to shop... found some really good jewelleries and pottery / art stores. it is more westernised than Saigon / Ho Chi Minh City.. but i liked both
Hoi An, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
The Cargo Club. Petite adresse de Hoi An pour les petits creux comme les grands. Patisserie, boulangerie, cuisine locale comme occidentale de quoi se faire plaisir!
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
if u feel sick try book into a hotel that has a doc on call. happened to me and the hotel was able to get the doc pretty quick, he was very good too. had the usual vomiting bug but was flying home the following day. Also his call out was really cheap! hotel we stayed in was 4star and was fab.
Da Lat, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
find yourself a free-rider for a reasonable price and discover this stunnin' inland area
Hoi An, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
This is where to come if you want a whole new wardrobe custom made and super cheap (around $8 per piece, give or take) We stayed in a place with a pool a short walk out of town, very nice room with satelite tv, ensuite, nice view for $6 per night for the room not per person! The hop on hop off bus dropped us off there. It was very nice, but may also have been nice to stay a little closer to town.
Nha Trang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
If you are coming from the North, beware... the people here are not nearly as friendly as they are up north. Maybe because it's a beach town, I don't know, but I was surprised.
Hoi An, Vietnam
If you always wanted to see „old“ Vietnam this is the right place to see. Hoi An is an open air museus where every corner speaks of history. Make sure that you have confortable walking shoes because that is the only possible way to see this place - wlaking through it – with exception of locals riding bicikles. Must see: open air market (those with sensitive noses – cover up), stone bridge, oldest house in town, temple and old crafts workshops (specialy marble cutters - real artists). Biggest dissapointent: unfortunately modern tehnology did not miss this place so you can find internet on several locations.
Da Nang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
order a taxi ahead of arrival in da nang and then make your way straight to hoi an!
Hoi An, Vietnam
Hoi An is a little town you really have to see when travelling in Vietnam! Every month they also have festivities when it's full moon; no cars or motorbikes are allowed in the old centre of town and everything is lit with lampoons. Very nice! If you need new clothes, YALY is very good. Complete suit, perfect fit from USD 65.
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
War Remnants Museum, at 28 Vo Van Tan Street, Open daily 7:30AM-12PM, 1:30PM-5PM, last admission 4:30PM. Formerly known as the of Exhibition House of American War Crimes, the museum was opened in a hurry, less than five months after the fall of the South. It's currently housed in a rather confused assemblage of seven warehouses, with new purpose-built premises partially open for temporary and permanent exhibits. This disturbing display of man's cruelty during the Vietnam (American) War includes halls full of gruesome photographs, a simulated "tiger cage" prison and jars of deformed fetuses blamed on Agent Orange. There is bias as surprise, surprise there are no records of any unpleasant deeds having been committed by the North Vietnamese Army. Outside, there are helicopters, jets, tanks, and other bits of armament. However watch out for the amputees who will try and sell you thier wares. It's only a block from the Reunification Palace — see the museum pamphlet for a map. Entry 15,000 dong.
Nha Trang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
There are those who remember that this was the home of the 5th Special Forces Group, many years ago.. Also the 8th field hospital
Da Lat, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Da Lat... Due to their altitude it's a lot cooler than the rest of Vietnam. What does this have to do with food?? Strawberries is what! The most delicious strawberries and strawberry jam comes from Da Lat.Try baggettes with strawberry jam and a viet style coffee - it's amazing!
Phu Quoc, Mekong Delta, Vietnam
Phu Quoc is a special island: if you travel around May to August, then the western coast of the island tends to be stormy and wet, but coasts such as Bai Kem or An Thoi enjoy beautiful weather. If you travel around November, December to Spring, then the western coast is the best place to go. What to do: Enjoy the pristine beach, trekking and swimming in Suoi Da Creek. Rent a boat at An Thoi and head to Hon Mong Tay or Hon Dam Ngoai for your own private beach! Visit the pearl farm, Fish sauce plant and pepper plantations (Vietnam is the world's largest exporter of pepper and a good number of it comes from Phu Quoc!). Try the "Co bien mai", a specialty mollusk dish. Go cuttlefish fishing, visit Duong Dong fish market, Phu Quoc prison or just lazily boosting your vitamin D dose in the resort.
Ninh Binh, Vietnam
Phat Diem church complex is a must-visit if you're in Ninh Binh, here you can see Vietnamese-style cathedrals date back from the 16th century (even before the French came). Nearly every village in Southern Ninh Binh has a historical church. Head to the beach to see some bustling fishing activities by the locals.
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
Ahhh Saigon!! My mother-town! U can live here just for $1,- a day! 10cents for a huge sandwhich!
Try the local food! (vietnamese food is so healthy): Ban Xeo (pancake), Banh Mi (sanwhiches), Pho! , Banh Cuon, etc etc. Go out the city and travel to the coast, beautiful untouched by tourist beaches..... Vietnam will be booming in the next few years, so be quick and enjoy the still-not-so-touristic places and islands..
Ha Long, North Vietnam, Vietnam
Take a boat trip on a sunny day, then you can jump of the boat between the limestone islands into the crystal clear water. After the swim you can enjoy a massage on the boat. Fantastic !
Nha Trang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Basically a beautiful beach and cheap party boats. A nice place to take a break between loads of sightseeing.
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
Check out the cafe Mokka. Great tea, coffee and food !!!
Sa Pa, North Vietnam-West, Vietnam
Most travellers pay one of the local touts to visit the local countryside en masse. Save your $10 USD - a friend and I drew our own map after talking to the old woman at our hostel and spent several days doing out-and-back hikes that were a highlight of northern Vietnam for me!
Nha Trang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
be aware of those motorcycles at night... you wouldn't be the first to get robbed... or tried to get robbed ...
Da Lat, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
go to goodnight saigon! great bar! the owner is an expert in "4 in a row", trying to beat him will drive you insane! :-)
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
bar Allez Boo! good ambiance, good music, good fun
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
two bars which I really liked: bar Le Pub (very good vegetarian pizza and they have newcastle brown) and Half man, Half noudle. both are really close together....
Hoi An, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
If you dont keep firm and bargan, you'll end up penniless! Hoi An people are hard core about ripping tourists off!
Kon Tum, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Kon Tum is a very little town. There is not much to do. It is the startingplace when you want to take an alternative route further to the north
Da Lat, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Rent a motorbike and explore Dalat and his surroundings! For the vegetarians there is DELICIOUS vegetarian food in the indoor market( 1st floor where all the food stalls are) in the center of Dalat.
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
South Vietnam Ho Chi Minh City also known as Sagion. It is a city never seem to sleep, the city beats with a palpable energy on all day without stop. In HCMC, the places not to be missed is the HCMC's French style post office next to the Notre Dame Cathedral, People's Committee Building formely know as ginerbread hotel Villa. Weekend and holdiay night, dong khoi is the place to be at, the street are jam pack with young ppl on motor bikes . It is very crowded at intersection with out traffice light and it is a sight not to be missed.
Da Lat, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
V's Cafe is amazing! Try Vang Da Lat (wine) Cafe 1000 roofs is also very cool. Go paddling on the lake in a swan, or go fly a kite! Beautiful city, beautiful landscape, artsy atmosphere. Love it!
Sa Pa, North Vietnam-West, Vietnam
Sa Pa was the very best in Vietnam. the landscape is overwhelming. we did a 3 day trekkingtour with a homestay. the food was so delicious and the family very friendly. I can recomment SaPa warmly. it was definitly one of my highlights in asia. but check the wheather first, can be chilly up there.
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
Beware of the mad traffic, take small steps when crossing the road and get travel insurance!!
Hue, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Although quiet well known, the Stop and Go Cafe in Hue still serves the best chicken rolls you will ever taste in your life. Roll them at the tables outside on the pavement and enjoy the city as it passes by.
Hoi An, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Hoi An is a nice town to relax. The town is also known for it silk. You can have made clothes in 2 days
Hai Phong, North Vietnam, Vietnam
Amazing volcanic Islands fill Hao Long Bay, take a boat tour and get off to hike the caverns. Don't have communion or sing "holy songs" it is still illegal there. Trinkets are resonably priced and haggling is respected. Just don't lowball.
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
Fantastic, the people are wonderful and the place is exciting. Take lots of money for shopping.
Xuyen Moc, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
Xuyen Moc is a really small Vietnamese village, where a friend and I went for a couple of days' rest. We went with some people we met in Ho Chi Minh City, and their family took us in. Nice town, friendly people, a piece of 'real' Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
There are a lot of fancy clubs, but watch out for police raids in the 'Apocalypse now' club..They take everyone with them for questioning, and nobody likes communist prison.
Da Lat, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
The Art Cafe in Dalat serves the best PUMPKIN SOUP I've ever tasted and the owner is hilarious! Let me know if you'll be travelling to Dalat because I have a few pictures I would like to give to the owner. And when you're in Dalat, DO spend a week on the back of a motor bike with one of the easy riders! That was probably one of the best and most fun things I've done in Viet Nam.
Ha Long, North Vietnam, Vietnam
HA Long Bay.... Amazing!!! I stay ther 2 days and 1 night! I really like it, even the weather was not so good...very cloudy...
Ap Long Khanh, Vietnam
it's a small countryside in Vietnam, from Saigon, the big city, it'll take u around 2,3 hrs to get to Long Khanh, u dun need that much of $$ to stay, they basically have a lot of fresh very cheap fruit food... but not much to see around though... my suggestion is Nha Trang, Mui Ne, Hue, Da Nang, Da Lat..... more interesting things to see....
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
oh boy, i luv this city...cuz i was born there... however, u need ur sunblock, it's too hot over there, plus pollution.... bad... u need a hat, a helmet (they require wearing 1 now), and some cash, most things are cheap over there... but be careful with ur purse... if u like necklaces or bracelets (all type - from girly to weird, unique...), just ride around the city, there'll multi-stores that have those cute stuff...with a price from $2 - 5 usd/ each, u'll find a bunch of great stuff.... market, u MUST negotiate with the seller, cuz ur stuff might cost only 1 buck but they can charge u for like $5, 6... cuz they know u're traveller.... dun eat in a fancy restaurant, a small place always have better food with better price.... great place to visit....
Ap Sai Gon, Mekong Delta, Vietnam
If you like vietnamese food, this place is for you!You can eat anywhere, at any time, anything you want.
Hue, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Looking for a cool hang out for a bit of tunes and a couple of cold beverages to recover from your day of sight seeing? Check out either the DMZ bar or Browneyes. If you head to Browneyes tell Foo, the owner and resident DJ that I say hi.
Vung Tau, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
from saigon, take a 1 hour and 45 min. hydrofoil ferry ride to vung tau. when there ask the people with motorbikes to bring you to the beach( i stayed in bimexco, pretty good and cheap)...the beach has great potential! you can also go to the jesus christ statue though a very long flight of stairs await...the view is amazing though. for food, don't let the fresh seafood of the coastal area go to waste by ordering beef, chicken or pork! bamboo restaurant is a great restaurant! great location as well!
Sa Pa, North Vietnam-West, Vietnam
Unlike most of Vietnam, Sa Pa gets cold, very cold, especially at night. Bring some warm clothes!
Hoi An, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
find restaurants that serve the local cuisine, it's fantastic
Da Nang, Vietnam
China Beach- beautiful white sandy beach that stretches as far as the eye can see! Sadly becoming over-run with beach resorts...
Hue, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
In the whole of vietnam: renting a motorcycle for yourself is heavenly
Can Tho, Mekong Delta, Vietnam
The floating market at Can Tho is a must for anyone visiting this region. Savour a fresh pineapple and marvel at the everyday world of the Mekong Delta inhabitants.
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
The water puppets are absolutely brilliant - there's nothing else like them anywhere, so I'd definitely recommend this attraction in Hanoi. That and the ice-cream, although I'd avoid Dog Streets!
Chau Doc, Mekong Delta, Vietnam
Chau Doc, a relaxing and beautifull place to stay in the Mekong region. You can experience the real local life here. See fishing villages, muslim village on the water, foot rowers, standing-hand rowers.. nice colorfull temples and markets if you go it bit more to the border of Cambodia. Also great food in this area.
Lao Bao, Vietnam
very very ghost town like though there is evidence of new development and tour buses around the border. The area is kind of dry and mountainous compared to Laos, which has plenty of trees. However, Laos is cutting down most of its trees to supply to vietnam...that is what you'll notice when you're driving around the roads in this area. you'll continuously have to pass big trucks with giant logs on the trailers and sometimes they travel in packs. be careful when passing if you're the driver. especially of motorcyclists. you don't want to kill or be killed.
Da Nang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
the beaches here are nice but you won't catch many locals getting some sun. there some places with beachside pools and showers. really convenient looking like an upscale beach resort...but it's open to public. the water is very calm and a deep jade green. it's not very cloudy either. to make your way to the more popular beaches, you will need to know where you're going or know someone who knows. but beaches here are mainly for tourists.
Hue, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
nothing here really unless you like to see old buildings and the like. EXTREMELY boring for a thrill seeker. but sif you prefer sight seeing, it might be ok.
Cu Chi, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
if the cu chi tunnels give you the shivers like they did me, find one of the soldiers with an AK47 and have a go...
Hoi An, Vietnam
visit 'koto'restaurant which is a non profit making training restaurant for street kids and orphans... they are fantastic and you will get the best english breakfast in vietnam even with baked beans!!
Hue, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
find a friendly local to take you on the back of his moped to the perfume river and the surrounding towns... one of the boatmen will sail you back to town... wonderful wonderful wonderful...
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
I definitely recommend that you visit the Old Quarter. Within the old quarter, you can see Hoan Kiem Lake, Ho Chi Mihn's mausoleum, musuems. The history of the Old Quarter spans 2000 years, so you will definitely get to see some good Vietnamese culture.
Hai Long, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Mui Ne is a strange little town. There is a great beach with lots of people parasurfing all day long, and nice little restaurants with good food, but not much else. The town caters to elderly German and Russian tourists, so the nightlife leaves a little to be desired if you're under the age of 40. However, if you want to just relax in the sun and be left alone, this is the place for you.
Nha Trang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
SCUBA Diving If you like diving then there is a place in Nha Trang Vietnam. I chose Rainbow Divers who came reccomended by my local Sydney dive group. I have now dived twice with Rainbow Divers, once in Nha TRang and once in Phu Quock Island Vietnam. I found them very professional in every way When it came to diving and its safety. They were very easy going and friendly. I found it quite cheap to dive, eg: 2 x dives including boat hire and all gear was $35US (May 2007). By memory there are was $35US (May 2007). There are a few diver centres in Nha Trang however I highly reccomend Rainbow Divers.
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
La Cantina: a great little mexican restaurant, run by Tanh, a really nice guy. We spent one week in HCM City and had many fantastic nights out with the people working there.
Moc Bai, Vietnam
Be careful of thieves in this land crossing ... as you change from the Cambodian to the Vietnamese coach (or vice-versa) at the immigration, your bags are dumped in front of the coach to be loaded once you have alighted ... this gives some quick artists enough time to steal a backpack or two... which is then emptied of its valuables and loaded on the next coach... so when you reach your destination city, your backpack is first missing, and when you create a scene it arrives in the next coach, ripped open and minus the valuables... not much to the place otherwise...

Hoi An, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
One of the nicest little jewels of Vietnam. Colourful and lots of tourists. You can get very good clothes deals here. Just ask the locals, they've all got friends who want to make a buck. The further you go outside the centre town for clothes, the better the deal. I brought back a whole new wardrobe.
Nha Trang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Scuba Zone (good deal for diving)
Quy Nhon, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Barbara's

Director Barbara Dawson, from NZ, is the best known person in Quy Nhon and knows everything about the city.

Nice rooms, good food and very friendly, english-speaking staff.
Quy Nhon, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
If you're interested in interacting woth locals, be at the beach front after work time. It seems like everyone is relaxing at the beach or the nearby football pitch where you can also get something to drink.
Otherwise the whole beach front is very nice and new.
Phu Quoc, Mekong Delta, Vietnam
Saur Beach.. just at the south of the island.. wite pure sand and nobody around.. just rent a motobike and drive there (be aware of chicks, kids and cows on your way there)..
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
Beware of the fake "Sinh cafés" !
Bac Ha, Vietnam
Bac Ha is way more quiet than Sa Pa. During the week there is almost nobody in the town and you can venture into the villages without seeing much tourists. On Saturday you might see a lot of people going to Can Cau market and then, from 1pm, start to see tourists comming to the city in order to get a bed so they can see the sunday market early. In Bac Ha you can see the Flower Hmong as well as others minorities such as Phu La (blue clothes) and a kind of Black Zaos (black clothes.)Bac Ha is famous for it's strong corn wine, brewed by local Flower Hmong people as well as it's animal market where you can see on sunday water buffaloes, cows, dogs, pigs and I don't know what being traded by the locals (you can ever see some kinds of small monkeys with great luck...)If you can come in the week to get a view of a quiet town and then, on Saturday head for Can Cau market and return to see the crazy sunday market ;-)
Lao Chai, Vietnam
Even if this village is slowly turning into a touristic place there are still a few ways to go and not to see a single tourist !A nice trekk is to start from Cat Cat village and turn left before the stairs to the waterfall (there is a small pond) and follow the way. You'll end up on a small dirty way which will bring you to Y Linh Ho village and after that, Lao Chai San and finally Lao Chai. The village itself isn't bad but in a few years it might not be that great anymore as shops are starting to sprout there and there...Nice place for seeing rice paddies as well as during the harvest time, golden rice fields. In Lao Chai you'll see the local minority : the Black Hmong. There isn't any other minority there.
Lao Cai, North Vietnam-West, Vietnam
Not the best place to stop by but if you are on your way to China you might want to stop near the border and have a quick look at the temple or even the park near the river (pass the train rails and walk for 5 minutes.)Most of the travellers comming from Hanoi to Sapa via train need to stop in Lao Cai in order to get the train tickets back to Hanoi. Simply stop in one of the restaurant mentionned on your "bill" and trade the paper-thing for the ticket.About the food near the train station there are lots of places to go but I suggest you to go to the one on the left side (when you're looking at the train station) where the menus are in english/french/vietnamese. They have a small aquarium and a huge plasma tv. Decent food and nice prices.
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
If you are looking for a clean room with a reasonable price in Hanoi, Royal Hotel, or so known as Duc Huy Hotel, is one of your choice. The hotel is located in the heart of the city, very close to the water puppets theater and Hoan Kiem Lake, less than 5 mins walk from the hotel.
Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam
Traveling from Noi Bai International Airport to the city of Hanoi, Taxi is one of the good choice. It usually costs around 12 USD per trip. Don't forget to bargain! You can either pay by USD or VND.

Hue, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Hue was the imperial capital of Vietnam ... so there are related sights to see... its lovely to sit by the river and watch here as well... and, yes, this is the tailoring capital of Vietnam now... so get something stitched if you want the experience...
Vinh, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
The city you often come to when you are coming in overland from Laos... generally non-descript kind of place barring a few usual sights... head south to Hue, Da Nang or Saigon ... or north towards Hanoi... though it is a biggish city with hotels and restaurants i f you want to stay...
Hoi An, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
If you go to Hoi An, be shure to have some free space in your backpack, and some favorite clothes you want copied. Tailors are abundant, and very good and cheap. They´ll make anything you want them to in a day or so, just be very clear on what you want! (bring pictures, or an example!)
Ninh Binh, Vietnam
In Minh Binh, THE thing to do is go and visit ´Halong Bay on the rice paddies´. In a rowboat you are pedalled around to see amazing beauty. However, before you arive to the main starting point, where there are fixed prices for the visit, you will come across some freelancers trying to convince you to do the same visit with them: do so! These people will tell you a lot, will not bother you to buy stuff, and will not charge you as much. At the same time you will be suporting the local economy!!!!
Da Lat, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
I didn't have time, but there are many Vietnamese motorcyclists who speak very good english who take people around Dalat on their bikes. They aren't very expensive and can tell you a lot about the area.
Nha Trang, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
It's a nice seaside town that you can get to by bus from Ho Chi Minh City. Definitely go with one of the PADI certified scuba places and opt to try scuba diving or snorkeling. It's relatively cheap there and you can see lots of bright fish and some decent coral. Just don't forget your sunscreen. Also skip monkey island (Phu Quoc) and go to Chan Chan.
Hue, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
I just wanted to WALK across the streets. Big mistake. I got foolowed by tuk tuk drivers, mototaxis, cyclo drivers, it's been really freaky. They followed me all over the place - they didn't bother that I said that I don't want to drive with them. A few guys followed me for 20!!! minutes!

Da Lat, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
An Sang street (between the bus parking lot and the Xuân Huong stream) is a small cobblestone alley occupied mostly by Hue folk. You will find the best Bún Bò here late at night. There is also hot soy milk and bún bò sold in the bus lot. Yum!
Da Lat, Central Vietnam, Vietnam
Xuan Huong Lake is haunted... Swim across at your own risk!!! Some locals blame the numerous "accidental drownings" in the past to a cold river current that runs through the middle of the lake, but others believe the spirits of all those who died there during the war lure unsuspecting victims into the lake and pull them under. Be Careful!!
Phu Quoc, Mekong Delta, Vietnam
While Phu Quoc is famous for their fish sauce, don't expect to carry any out via airplane. The sauce is so smelly that the airport won't allow you to bring it onto the plane :(
Ho Chi Minh City, South-East Vietnam, Vietnam
If booking a day trip or multi day trip, check out the travel agencies on De Tham (near 23/9 park, just off of Pham Ngu Lao). Probably the best would be Delta Adventure Tours as it has been around for a long time and gives more options. Also, if you book through another agency, it is quite likely that you will end up on a Delta Adventure tour anyway. Why not go to the source.
Can Tho, Mekong Delta, Vietnam
There are some great restaurants near the HoChiMinh statue on Hai Ba Trung. Mekong and Phuog Nam are side by side and have very similar menus, both of which are very good with a large variety, from Vietnamese food to western food, snake dishes to sandwiches.
