Vietnam Vietnam is in many ways, what Thailand once was. Vietnam is a beautiful country with spectacular scenery and a rich colourful history. It is a country that has still been able to retain its original charm. Oft photographed, Vietnam ’s landmarks are instantly recognizable. Ha Long Bay , a world heritage site, features a network of rounded limestone islands that rise sharply from the sea.  They have been the setting for many movies, paintings and more. Cruises through the region of more than 3000 limestone islets offer an unforgettable experience. A visit to one of the many hill tribes throughout the scenic mountain regions gives you insight into their day to day life. At Dong Hoi, visit the Phong Nha caves, another world heritage site featuring over 65km of caves and underground rivers.  Hue , the former imperial capital and royal residence - once the political, religious and cultural centre of Vietnam - is bound to impress. Within Hue , be sure to see the 17th century Thien Mu Pagoda, an octagonal tower that is among the most famous in the country. Dalat, is a heavily French influenced quaint hill station that was once referred to has “Le Petit Paris.” The Capital, Hanoi , is a must see, including the Old Quarters, and Ho Chi Minh’s former residence. While here, be sure to catch a water puppet performance. The Mekong Delta, is another must see place as you navigate narrow waterways, see local farmhouses and rice paddies. Finally, it’s hard to forget Saigon , with its Pagodas, the Opera house museum, the former Presidential Palace, and the communist guerrilla tunnel systems used during the, 'Ten Thousand Day War.'  Visiting Vietnam is like being drawn to a new world of vivid landscapes and new discoveries.  It is said there are more shades of green here than anywhere else on Earth.

If you are planning on going to both Vietnam and Cambodia, consider taking a boat on the Mekong River from Phnom Penh to Chau Doc or the other way around, instead of flying or taking the bus. The journey is fantastic and only takes 5 hours with the fast boat ($25) or 8 hours ($15) with the slow boat. We took the fast boat and it was thoroughly comfortable and enjoyable.
We booked through Mekong Tours in Chau Doc and they took us to a fish farm and Cham village first. Be aware that the boat can run late due to occasional long queus at the border crossing, so if you are planning to travel to Siem Reap on the same day, the last bus leaves at 2pm, so if you get there after that you will have to catch a taxi or shared taxi to get there. Don't buy a bus ticket to Siem Reap from an agency in Chau Doc as they will charge you $15 instead of the usual $5 or $6.
Visas are available at the border and cost $20, you will need to bring one passport photo.

When traveling through the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, be sure to use the Mai Linh Express bus company as it has the best vehicles and it simply doesn't stop, except to drop off passengers. It is fast, safe, comfortable and efficient, which is a lot to ask for in Vietnam. You can catch those minibuses from Ho Chi Minh City and most major towns in the Mekong. All the locals seem to use this company, despite it being slightly more expensive than the others. When you take a look at the other vehicles you will quickly understand why!
