Ha Long city serves as the gateway to Ha Long Bay.  While the city itself is primarily industrial, Ha Long bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The bay features limestone rock formations that protrude from the water and many cave that can be explored both on foot and by boat.

A common way to experience Ha Long bay is to spend the night on bay in a traditional boat.

Ha Long bay is located 2hours north of Hanoi and is easily assessable via car, mini-van and bus from the capital.

A New Perspective

One of our favorite experiences in Ha Long Bay was taking a kayaking tour. It’s a good idea to kayak with a guide as the rock formations start to look alike, especially when you’re at water level, so it’s easy to get lost. The great things about kayaking is you get to see the bay from a new and different perspective. It also gives you the opportunity to go further off the beaten path and discover hidden lagoons and deserted beaches. Our our tour we rowed through a opening in one of the karsts and explored a remote lagoon. Later we docked on a deserted beach and went swimming and had crab races on the sand. One word of caution, watch out for the sand mites. When we were on the beach I got eaten alive by sand mites and my legs were an itchy mess for the next several weeks! Regardless, I highly recommend kayaking when you’re in Ha Long Bay, not only is it a great workout, it’s an amazing way to explore the karsts.

Equipment: If you go with an organized tour your kayaks and paddles will be included.

Organized Tours

A trip to Vietnam is not complete without a Ha Long Bay tour. Most tourists book tour packages in Hanoi to get to Ha Long Bay. This is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to see Ha Long Bay. The tours vary in duration but a 3 day, two night tour is a sufficient amount of time to see all that Ha Long Bay has to offer. Our 3 day, two night tour included roundtrip transportation from Hanoi, one night sleeping on a junk and one night hotel on Cat Ba Island, all meals and tours, including a kayak tour and a guided tour of the caves. Our guide was knowledgeable and the tour was a great way to meet other travelers. The drawbacks of our tour: the food was not as good as we had expected although it was plentiful and while on the junk they tried to charge us for bringing our own alcohol on board. So we ended up hiding our drinks in our cabin and sneaking them up top after dark when we were hanging out with the other guests. The tour costs anywhere from $40 to $60 US per person, all included except tips for your guides. This is for a budget tour. There are more expensive tours available that cater to those with 4 star tastes and the wallet to match.

Iconic Junks

Most tours of the bay include a ride on a junk. You know, those iconic boats with the big sails. Some tours of the bay even include an overnight on a junk, which I highly recommend. We spent one night on the junk and wished we could have spent more. Our cabin was clean and comfortable. It was lovely being rocked to sleep on the water. And since we were on an organized tour, it was great to be able to relax at night on the top deck with other travelers, sharing stories and tips. Be aware that many of the junks have strict rules on bringing outside liquor on board (of course they don’t tell you about this rule up front). They want you to purchase their liquor and have hefty fees for bringing on your own alcohol. But when you’re docked for the night locals will row their boats up, selling snacks, cigarettes and liquor. They can’t do anything if you buy liquor and take it to your room but they’ll try and catch you if you’re drinking on deck with the other travelers. And of course their liquor is more expensive than anywhere else. Just hide the booze and keep the contraband on the down low and you’ll be fine.
