Virgin Islands People & Culture
Cruz Bay, Virgin Islands Taxis in Cruz Bay to Cinnamon Bay Campground are $2 more if you ride alone vs getting on one with other people. Good tip? (0) Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands I recommend Megan's Bay. A beautiful beach that's on the opposite side of the island from where the cruise liners pull in. Nice people and a great beach. If you MUST go to McD's or BK they will ask you "stayin or goin?" in a thick island accent which at first won't sound anything like "for here or to go?" Good tip? (0) Charlotte Amalie, Virgin Islands If you love shopping this is the place to go. Dronnigens Gade, the main street is home to many of the shops. You will find amazing deals on just about anything imported, Especially perfumes, so much so you can find perfumes for up to 40 dollars cheaper than on a cruise ship or in Canada. Avoid Magens bay, it is nice but very crowded and the sand is not very white. Take a walk around Downtown Charlotte Amalie if you love history and little boutiques, this area is the original town founded by the danish over 300 years ago. Follow the back paths, all of the people are friendly and you never know what you will find, They may lead you to the king's residence or to a 250 year old mall. My best advise is to take it slow and take in this island because it is one amazing gem. Good tip? (0) Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands Get away from the cruise ship port to experience the real flavor of the Virgin Islands. Take a ferry (car or people) to some of the other islands in the area (both US and British) to really appreciate the culture! Good tip? (0) Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands Go to the other side away from the city. Unbelievable beaches in cool bays. Wow! The people are fantastic there! Just hire someone to take you around the island - much better than not knowing what you are going to do. Good tip? (0) Anguilla, Virgin Islands Go to Anguilla Monday, a crazy beach party in the beginning of August! There's live music, BBQ, drinks, and general mayhem all day long. Good tip? (0) Teagues Bay, Virgin Islands Low key. You are lookng at the eastern most golf course in the USA. You can dine al fresco at Duggans ... the fish and lobster are ALWAYS fresh if Frank Duggan says they are. Most seafood is delivered fresh daily. Great little deli at teh entrance to The Reef (funky 1960's development ... an early adopter on St. Croix). Nice beach next to Duggan's and they serve cold beer all day. Duggan's is casual and elegant at the same time ... shorts to linen jackets and dresses can be can be seen but something in the middle is more common. For a truly elegant evening, go up the hill to Villa Madeline for true island splendor from the top of the mountain overlooking Teague Bay. And everything is walking distance though you might want to driv up the hill as walking home in the dark could be lethal. Enjoy. Good tip? (0) Charlotte Amalie, Virgin Islands Lots of stores here that you see everywhere in the Caribbean. But the H. Stern Outlet -- it's one of a kind and has gorgeous gems and gold. Good tip? (0) Cruz Bay, Virgin Islands Ah the Virgin Islands! Cruz Bay is the point of arrival when taking a ferry from St. Thomas to St. John island. You can rent cars here, grab local transpo, check out hotel bars and restaurants, and do some gift shopping... but its really a stopping off point to get supplies before heading out into the pristine environment of the island to do great snorkelling, diving, and camping. Good tip? (0) Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands Definitely book a sailing trip around the surrounding islands. Beautiful beaches and coral reefs make for great snorkeling. Break up your trip to Saint Thomas and spend some time on Saint John. Bring lots of sunscreen, a hat, some good books, and a bathing suit. You'll need some clothes for dinners, but most of the attire is very casual. Good tip? (0) Saint John, Virgin Islands We did this as a day trip from St. Thomas--should have made it longer. We took a boat from St. Thomas to St. John, then hired a taxi on the island and went to Cinnamon Bay. The taxi was easy to get and reasonable, but getting to the destination took a while. Cinnamon Bay is a gorgeous, lesser traveled bay, great for snorkeling even for a beginner. Calm waters, beautiful fish, we saw sea turtles right away! Plan on renting a car for the day to expedite travel, or better yet, camp near Cinnamon Bay and stay for a few days. You won't regret it. Next time we plan to spend a week on St. John itself. Its a lovely, laid back and very friendly island. Good tip? (0) Charlotte Amalie, Virgin Islands When you arrive in port, take a taxi to Morningstar Beach. It was one of my favorite beaches and it also has a nice outdoor restaurant centrally located if you are hungry. I only went to Magen's Bay once, but it is also nice. There is also a great restaurant that serves burgers, salads and a lot of other stuff. I can't remember what it is called, but it is literally a block forward when you step off of a cruise ship in port. Keep in mind though that if you eat anywhere in St. Thomas, you need to be prepared to wait. They are in no hurry at all. Good tip? (+1) Teagues Bay, Virgin Islands Low key.
