Few travelers choose to stop at Saint John when traveling to Virgin Islands, and those that do usually only make a brief stop to see the Trunk Bay Beach. Other places in the area such as Saint Thomas and Charlotte Amalie may be more interesting to explore. Travel Tips from people who've been to Saint John
We did this as a day trip from St. Thomas--should have made it longer. We took a boat from St. Thomas to St. John, then hired a taxi on the island and went to Cinnamon Bay. The taxi was easy to get and reasonable, but getting to the destination took a while. Cinnamon Bay is a gorgeous, lesser traveled bay, great for snorkeling even for a beginner. Calm waters, beautiful fish, we saw sea turtles right away! Plan on renting a car for the day to expedite travel, or better yet, camp near Cinnamon Bay and stay for a few days. You won't regret it. Next time we plan to spend a week on St. John itself. Its a lovely, laid back and very friendly island.

Gallows Point Resort is a fabulous place to stay in St. John if you prefer small boutique hotels to touristy mega resorts.  Quiet, beautiful, for families with older children.

Loved the beauty of St. John USVI but disappointed in the lack of police presence in cruz bay in the late afternoon and dinner hour.  The locals with crack habits stand on the street corner with backpacks scoping out which tourist family they can prey upon.  When we asked about it at local restaurants it was downplayed or treated as a joke.  No joke for my family and I'm a criminal defense lawyer.
