This is the 2nd time I am trying to put this review in this website so let's hope it works this time. So here goes... In March of last year we wanted to celebrate my youngest daughter's birthday and wanted something different... An English work colleague of mine who is flambouyant to say the least recommended trying out one of the places run by The Landmark Trust. I will explain to you later who they are and what they do. This glossy expensive looking catalogue was slammed on my table as if to say to ohhing ahmmm around girlfriend try this... I think I annoyed her by not even enquiring about it any further - that shows how much she thinks about it. With that 'recommendation' I had no choice but to study the catalogue. Boy was I glad!!! It is absolutely amazing and I was blown away with the types of lodgings this company had to offer. No, no, it is the run of the mill type of lodging it way way different. Have a look at my pictures and you will see what I mean. They are all self catering, so you have to bring your own food and refreshments. Also althought they are all fully equipped with all the modern amenities like washing machine, dishwashers, fridge freezer, central heating they do not have radio or tv. You will be glad radio and tv is not supplied. From London it is about 4hrs drive. Although most of the way is motorway (highway) about 90minutes of it is dark winding narrow country roads. So off we went in 2 cars jam packed with food, drinks and alcohol (lots of it). Well, we had 3 nights there we wanted to enjoy ourselves. 7 adults and a 2 year old baby. When we finally arrived the closest we could park was about 100 yards away from the West Blockhouse. Lugging around boxes of food, drinks and luggage across loose rocks and bums and portholes was not easy. By the time we were finished it was pitch dark. No lights outside. If you are frightened of the dark do not venture out although the moonlight did provide some lighting. The fire place was lit and provided a cosy setting. It was lovely. Our son set up his iPod and played his FIFTY CENT, JAYZEE, KANYE WEST, type of music. I like Hip Hop RB it was good and gave us a good reminder we are still on earth and we are not the only inhabitants in this world. This place is so remote - the nearest village is about 5 miles away and the nearest neighbour (one other house), is about a mile away and down the little valley (not in sight). So if you wanted to have a METALICCA, IRON MAIDEN type of mad parties you could. No one can hear you. You are isolated. The accommodation level is on the first floor with a front door that has a draw bridge (yes a real authentic one). The lower floor is the armour room which is bare, damp and no lighting. In fact it looks like a dungeon. This Blockhouse is a Victorian fortification of Milford Haven. It once had 6 heavy guns pointing to the sea providing protection from attack on the landward side. It was also used in the 2nd world war where it was also a garrison for 34 men and 1 officer. This place is plastered with history all over. It has a roof terrace with a flag pole where there 2 flags (the Union Jack the 'Y Ddraig Goch' or commonly known as the Red Dragon) - made available for you to put up at the flag pole. My husband nominted himself to be the keeper fo the flags. So every morning he would fly the flags - one day the Union Jack and the other the Red Dragon. Although he is English he thought as he is in Wales it be best to also fly the Welsh flag. How appropriate. In the middle of the landing (hall) was another heavy wooden door that led to a spiral staircase with metal chain that led to the armour store. It was cold and draughty and if whatever you spoke it would echo. Spooky! Anyway first morning my oldest daughter said she could have sworn last night she heard someone trying to open her bedroom door and upon waking up saw a shadow move under her door. She could not sleep much that night. The 2nd night both she my son could hear someone walking the hall. When we found the guest book we read that some of the guests who had stayed there also experienced the same thing and some started be-friending a ghost called MR SHAKKLES. Great that is all we needed!!! With some intoxicants in our system we started to amuse ourselves with quizzes. As the night got to morning everyone else got so drunk and plenty of laughter and frolicks that the answers to the quizzes got more and more rediculous and outrageous - it was hilarious. On our last night in the West Blockhouse the kids decided to dare the girls to go down to the armour rooms and see who could stay there the longest. 5 minutes later all came upstairs at the same time - the girls pretty shaken whilst the guys only slightly, (trying to put a macho front), said they heard dragging feet... Serves them right...ha ha ha ha. Before I forget it has to be said the coast is absolutely spectacular and the countryside has such unrivalled beauty that left us simply speechless. If you are interested go to this website for more information on the Landmark Trust who manage properties as this. They are a non-profitmaking organisation which has by Prince Charles himself as a board member. They main aim is to re-store derelict and dying buildings of historic significance and hire them out for one and all. All the money they are making get ploughed back in to the upkeep of each place and also obtaining rescueing new ones. www.landmarktrust.org.uk . I really really really would recommend you try these out. Word of warning it is not cheap especially during peak season. One way of tackling the hire costs is to get your mates or family members to pool your monies together. That is what we did.
