Since travel abroad usually entails good food, those two things went together pretty well for me. So one day, I decided, what the heck, let's do this. Turned in my resignation at my old job, hopped on a plane, flew across the continent from Montreal to Mountain View, then learned step by step the hard way what we needed to do to build this web site. :) Oh, and of course getting hungrier by the minute. :) Thank you guys for coming by, and looking forward to building this community together! :) Travel ScorecardCountries See cities Map Loading! Page 1 of 10 My Reviews![]() Inle Lake, Myanmar (Burma) ![]() Added Sep 30, 2011 Having seen more gorgeous settings for lakes, at first I was disappointed. But it's less about just the scenery (which is beautiful nonetheless during sunset and sunrise - especially when you are on an overwater bungalow) than the chance to catch glimpses of local village life that makes it worth it. Most tours visit the same touristy spots, so see if you can find a guide willing to take you to the more remote places (and validate that they are indeed not just the main circuit stops). My favourite part was watching the locals zip around with their one legged rowing technique -- and then trying it myself. :) ![]() Yountville, California, United States ![]() Added May 8, 2011 I am not a bread person, but I'm addicted to their epi baguette. I'd almost recommend you get a light meal and focus on eating these baguettes. The crunch you get on the crust is sooo good. I had the new years tasting menu, and it was pretty good too. Not the best tasting menu I've ever had, but it was a well rounded set of courses. Worth a stop just for the bread alone. ![]() Napa, California, United States ![]() Added May 8, 2011 OMG I don't even like burgers, but this place has me craving a burger right now in the middle of the night. They have the BEST burger I've ever eaten. I haven't tried their brunch yet and I'm itching to, but rumour has it they have one of the best Sunday brunches in Napa too. ![]() San Carlos, California, United States ![]() Added May 8, 2011 Anytime you got something with foie gras and I'm sold. The Refuge offers the option to add foie gras to any of their burgers for $10. But the star is really the pastrami. I don't even normally like pastrami! Get their Reuben sandwich, which is a toasted sandwich with Russian sauce and pastrami. If you go on the weekends it can get pretty busy, but the wait is not bad on week nights. They've also got a pretty large selection of beers. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added May 7, 2011 I haven't tried many different dishes - only their burgers so I can't comment on how consistent their food is, but I do like their burger. It's grassfed beef, comes with your choice of salad or fries (I usually opt for half and half) plus cajun dip. Prices are reasonable, staff is friendly. Not a destination place, but worth a stop if you're in the area and hungry. ![]() Napa, California, United States ![]() Added May 7, 2011 Came here spontaneously for NY dinner with the roomies after not having made plans for NY's. I got their set menu and I have to say it was one of the most creative and delicious meals I've had in ages. I loved the presentation, loved the taste, and the whole process of eating felt like a mini ritual. Fun stuff! :) First course was a fish tartare like dish that came on a small bamboo tray accompanied by a medley of dipping toppings. We had a utensil to scoop the fish and dip it into various toppings before then dipping it into the sauce Second course was a phyllo-wrapped foie gras with eel roll topped with a fried shiso leaf. Third course was my favourite - a veggie and waygu beef fondue. It was so much fun dipping things into my little fondue pot. I loved this one so much I tried to recreate it at home. Go for the original :) Fourth course was stuffed squid with black squid ink gnocchi. Fifth course was broiled lobster with 7 spices accompanied by a sweet creme fraiche dip. Yummy also :) Next was a perfectly cooked piece of beef accompanied by beef cheek tempura. After that came an assortment of nigiri sushi, all of which were of course really good. The proscuitto one was cute - it looked like it was wrapped in a mini bow tie. All of this was topped off by dessert - a little box of churros to be dipped in spicy hot chocolate. I can't wait to go back and see what else they do with their food presentation. Good thing they are a drive away in Napa or else I'd break the bank :) ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added May 7, 2011 Had fun trying various dishes at this Belltown gastro-pub. I tried their blasted broccoli, bacon wrapped scallops, brie tart. Food was good, service was good too, and I like that they are open till 2:00am. Only thing is that their food was a bit on the salty side, but I don't know if it's consistently like that or just on my particular trip. ![]() Richmond, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added May 7, 2011 This place is pretty cool. You have to have something special to stand out in Richmond, where bubble tea cafes are around every corner. This place manages to do that with freshly made mochi and filled bubble waffles. I got the mango slush with mochi and fresh mango cubes and it was quite yummy. One cup was enough for 3 of us! ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added May 6, 2011 Located downtown right across from Pacific Centre Mall, Urban Sushi is a decent place to get sushi if you're in the mood for something simple and don't have time to get to some of the better sushi places. The prices are comparable to other places. If you want big portions though Samurai Sushi on Denman is still better value, and there are plenty of other places to go for higher quality sushi. Some cool rolls like the Tofino roll or their Urban roll. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Apr 25, 2011 Get the right dishes, and So's really good. I'd try their black bean noodles and chicken wings. The other dishes just tasted uber greasy. ![]() San Jose, California, United States ![]() Added Oct 19, 2010 While this place is definitely touristy, it was fun to see such a crazy place with its staircases to the ceiling, uneven steps, twisted hallways and all. The topper is knowing that someone actually designed the house to be that way to live in, not that it was built to be a tourist attraction. Fun to visit at least once. ![]() Juneau, Alaska, United States ![]() Added Sep 17, 2010 Mount Roberts Tramway is expensive, but it's a good way to get a great view of Juneau. It's $27 for an adult tram ticket (for unlimited rides up and down for a day), and at the top is an observation deck and other exhibits. A good way to see the lookout point if you've got the energy and want to save some money would be to hike up to the top of Mount Roberts via the Mount Roberts trail. It's 2 miles long with about a 3,000 foot elevation gain, but at that point it's only $5 to take the tram back down (or free if you purchase $5 worth of food or other things in the gift shop). It's definitely a great vantage point so worth seeing in some form or another! ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added Sep 10, 2010 I'm bribable with cupcakes. Anytime a place offers free mini pineapple cupcakes at teatime, it's going to get my attention. :) In all seriousness though, Maxwell is a nice, fairly new functional hotel. It's close to public transit (I took the lightrail from the airport, transferred to the monorail and walked the last bit), attractions like the Space Needle, and various restaurants, and has important things like a mini fridge, a microwave, free wifi and access to parking. (There's also a pretty big TV in the room). My bathroom was fairly functional - there was no tub, just a doorless showerstall which made less of a mess than I expected. The staff were also friendly and the rooms comfortable. My only complaint (and I read this on some other sites too) is that you can hear a little bit through the walls. Something to consider if you're sensitive to noise. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Aug 27, 2010 Came here with a bunch of friends to celebrate a birthday and had a really lovely time. I liked the restaurant ambiance, and our waiter was very personable. We all decided on the Chef's tasting menu, which was great -- they even accommodated one of our friends who doesn't like fish by substituting for other stuff. The only thing I regret was that I wasn't super hungry when I went in, so I was full by the second course, meaning that I couldn't fully appreciate everything. Best part since we came in at 8:45pm on Sunday (and they are closed Monday) is that they gave us each complimentary cupcakes to take home that were pretty yummy. ![]() Yountville, California, United States ![]() Added Aug 27, 2010 I've been wanting to eat here since Top Chef Masters. :p It certainly didn't disappoint. I went with the waitress' suggestions and everything was spot-on, from the wood-grilled Octopus to the gnocchi and risotto. I thought the only slight letdown was the pork dish, which was the Saturday night special - it was good, just not as good as the other dishes! Things picked back up for the dessert - a hazelnut mousse that takes 20 minutes to prepare, but was worth the wait. Can't wait to go back and try more things! ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Aug 27, 2010 I have to support local businesses, and I was happy to see this place open up. The roomies and I went over to the restaurant, and we thought it was pretty cool that the owner's mom had flown in from Ethiopia and would be cooking some of her signature dishes. I don't really remember what we ordered as we asked them to bring us whatever they recommended. I thought everything was great except the chicken that was still on the bone, as that was a bit hard to eat. I'll definitely be back! ![]() Vacaville, California, United States ![]() Added Aug 22, 2010 Vacaville is not exactly your destination kinda restaurant hotspot, but still I wanted something a little different. Found L&L Hawaiian, which seems to be run by a Hawaiian family. I got the Lau-Lau, which is this taro / banana leaf wrapped pork dish that was really delicious. It's only a slight step above takeout, but I totally loved it. I'd probably go back if I was in Vacaville again. :) ![]() Saint Helena, California, United States ![]() Added Aug 22, 2010 Came here with friends last year and came back again a couple days ago. It's a pretty winery with nice picnic grounds and a marketplace to buy breads, spreads, coldcuts and cheeses (a bit like Viansa in Sonoma). Their wines are only sold on premise, and they have a number of sweeter wines like their top selling gamay rouge and their moscato, which is great for people like me who like sweeter wines. :p They are usually insanely crowded, possibly because they offer food on top of wine, and there is usually food sampling going on. I had their sandwiches for the first time and was very surprised. They are much better than I'd have expected! Worth a visit if you want some food to cut through all the wine tasting, and the grounds are always pretty to wander through. :) ![]() Sausalito, California, United States ![]() Added Aug 22, 2010 I was doing a kayaking trip in Sausalito, and decided to stop in the area for lunch afterwards. Fish is situated right by the water with lots of outdoor seating, so it's a nice way to soak in the neighbourhood. I got the ceviche appetizer (small - $8) and the crab roll ($25) based on numerous other reviews. I found the ceviche needed more salt, but the crab roll was pretty good. It was super buttery tasting like you were dipping crab straight into a little pot of butter with a generous portion of dungenous crab meat. I wouldn't say it was the best value lunch in the world, but combined with the location a fun stop for the afternoon. Note that Fish is cash only. ![]() Benicia, California, United States ![]() Added Aug 18, 2010 Pulling up to the hotel, it looked absolutely brand new, so I figured - sweet! Not so sweet. The walls are PAPER THIN. I could hear everything going on with the family that stayed in the room next door. All night long. I was also disappointed there was no tub, and that it's just a shower stall. That said, decor seems nice. ![]() Menlo Park, California, United States ![]() Added Aug 6, 2010 My roommate orders from here for work all the time and she really loved this place, so we decided to swing by one evening. I liked that John the own was very heavy-handed on the fish to rice ratio. Food was pretty good, but it is a little bit out of the way. I'd definitely eat there again if I was in the area! ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 28, 2010 My friend heard about this place on NPR, and so we decided to check it out. We made reservations for 7:30 to go on a Friday night. Turns out they don't honour reservations. We waited 30 minutes on arrival, which turned out to be on the short side of average wait times for people with reservations. Upon sitting down though, the waitress made us wait another 30 minutes before she took our order. We tried to flag down various waiters but they all ignored us in between as we watched tables that got seated after us get served. So it wasn't a great start to the dining experience. Once our dishes started coming though, I have to admit they were pretty tasty and fairly priced. Everything ranged from about $8 to $15. We ordered the Green Mango salad with soft shelled crab ($11.95), the Pad Thai on the waitress's recommendation ($9.95), the Angel Wings which are supposed to be a highlight ($7.50), a weekend special which was fish in a red curry mousse(~$15), a chicken yellow curry $8.95) and Pad Garlic, which was sauteed prawns with garlic and black pepper ($9.50). We also ordered the coconut rice dessert, which was interesting. Overall, the food was good, but not quite good enough for a long drive and longer wait. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 28, 2010 My friend had a company function here and so she scored us free tix to the zoo. I don't remember the last time I went to the zoo, but it was fun! The place was much larger than I expected, and it took us well over 3 hours to see the whole place. It's always an adjustment to reconcile how you expect an animal to be and the real life equivalent. Gorillas looked smaller than I expected, anteaters waaaaay larger. While I'm glad to have the opportunity to see these creatures, and I'm aware many of these animals would not be able to live in the wild (like the resident eagle that had been shot in the tail), I still felt a pang watching them, rather wishing they got to be living their natural lives. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 27, 2010 A tree lined urban park and playground located in South Beach. There are picnic tables to sit down got lunch and to get away from the urban sprawl. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 18, 2010 We came here for my birthday, as it was recommended both by my hairstylist and my roommate's hairstylist coincidentally at the same time. The service was a bit slow, but the food was quite good. My onnnnly complaint is that the prices were a bit too high for me to make this a regular place to visit. I think it came to about $40 a person. We got the Red dragon caterpillar, the Elias roll, the chef's choice sampler, and the Kiji Shooter. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 18, 2010 We came here because of a Groupon coupon. I'm glad we had the discount as the place was really just OK. We got the uni and oyster shooters, the chef's choice sashimi, the TC roll, the Oh! Yes Roll, the Super Volcano roll, the Hawaii Roll and the Calamari Tempura roll. Dinner came to about $125 for 4 of us. The rolls were alright, but the pieces were small - you got 5-6 pieces per roll for about $10. The shooters were a big mistake. They came in these plastic cups and were filled with too much sake to be shot. It was actually so gross I gagged as I tried to shoot my oyster shooter. The service seemed ok. In all, I'm glad I tried it, but I wouldn't go back. 3 stars for food quality, with -1 star for the price and the disgusting shooters. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 18, 2010 We came here based on recommendations. Even at 9:30pm at night, the place was packed. We ordered 4 dishes - the appetizer combo, the squid salad, the curry eggplant and their fried sea bass. The portions were so big I think the first two dishes were enough to fill the four of us. The appetizer combo is build it yourself, which can get pretty messy, but the beef was good and tasty. Prices ranged from around $7.95 for the salad to $18.95 for the sea bass. Definitely a good place when you're craving some hearty Vietnamese food! ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 17, 2010 If you really like grilled cheese sandwiches, this could be just the place for you. Sandwiches like "Piglet" with sharp cheddar, ham and apple mustard or "Mushroom Gruyere" with wild mushrooms and leaks are pretty tasty. The owner is pretty cool too as he comes by and introduces himself as he brings you your order. I'm not really huge into grilled cheese sandwiches though, and I wish it came with some salad or some other form of green. Also I ordered the savory bread pudding and I found the bread a bit chewy and hard, whereas I was expecting a more soft, custard like taste. Overall I'm glad I tried it, and I think anyone who loves grilled cheese sandwiches would totally love it, but it's not my favourite place in the world. ![]() Monterey, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 17, 2010 We didn't expect to come here - the original hotel was flooded by a guest so we were re-diverted here. Mariposa is a lovely place though so I'm glad we discovered it. The rooms are spacious and we had a fireplace that we turned on right away. The bathroom were pretty basic but the toiletries were nice (H20 spa products). Wifi and breakfast were included, though the wifi is slow and the continental breakfast is ok. I liked that a mini microwave and stove were also included in unit. The only downside is that you can feel the footsteps of people walking in the units above you and hear kids running in the halls outside in the morning. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jul 17, 2010 I got this place via Priceline. The location was extremely conveninent as it's about a 3 minute walk to the Canada line and right outside the Burrard Station skytrain. It's also several blocks away from Pacific Centre mall, Robson street and Canada place. The plus too is that the staff was also courteous. Minuses of the place was that it was noisy for a four star! I could hear people in the halls and so I wasn't able to sleep well, even though the beds were comfortable. I also thought our room smelled a bit. So that aspect of the hotel is 3 stars. ![]() Pacific Grove, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 15, 2010 For some reason, I always feel intimidated about cooking seafood (specifically fish), so I like to order seafood when I'm out. Passionfish was recommended on a number of forums so I decided to check it out over the weekend with some friends. Since they all ordered fish dishes, I ordered the duck confit. We split a Baked gorgonzola/golden chutney/curried greens/spiced pecans salad and the Seared Scallop risotto cake for appetizers. The two appetizer dishes were absolute standouts, and I think I could have eaten both just by myself. :) I found my duck confit a bit dry and the orange fennel a bit odd, but I did love the halibut dish. Dessert wise, the banana bread was delicious, whereas the flourless chocolate cake was really just ok. Overall there were some real home runs and some headscratchers. Lesson to be learned - you can have an amazing meal if you order right, but otherwise there can be some misses. Dinner came to about $40 a person without wine. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jul 7, 2010 My friend Laura and I had talked about going to tea for ages (but not getting around to it), so I was pleasantly surprised when she had booked us Afternoon Tea at the Hotel Vancouver Fairmont as our joint birthday presents. We sat down for tea on a Sunday and it was a lovely experience. The tea was good (I had earl grey with lavender, she had orange pekoe), as were the sandwiches and pastries. We both found the mango mousse pastry a little bit sweet, and in the end, couldn't finish it all, but what a great setting and a fun afternoon! ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jul 7, 2010 The one thing this place has in spades is personality! You walk in, and we're greeted with the question "Are you ready for the BEST hotdog in your life!!?" Actually I wasn't because I was going for tea with my friend in about 15 minutes, but I couldn't resist sampling my friends' dogs. :p Dougie Dog has a pretty extensive hotdog menu with all sorts of creative flavours - there's a super mario dog, a trailer park dog among other flavours and offerings. The bites I had were tasty, and it's good to know the dogs are hormone free. Most hotdogs were about $6.95, and definitely very filling. Looking forward to going back for a full hotdog of my own! ![]() Mountain View, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 6, 2010 I came here with my roommates as they had a restaurant.com coupon. It was here that I first discovered the deliciousness of beef jerky in a papaya salad! Savory doesn't look it from the outside, but it's a somewhat more upscale Vietnamese restaurant. I had their yam roll, their shaking beef that was very tender, their crab and their garlic glass noodle. Everything was very good, but I'm not sure it would have been worth it from a price-value if we didn't have our certificate. The dishes were not too small, and on a very hungry day, I probably could have eaten 2 mains on my own! :) ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 6, 2010 Came here with friends, and found the place to be quick, friendly, and pretty good. You place your order at the front, they give you a number and you grab a table while you wait for your number to be called. I tried a number of dishes - (can't remember the names) but I remember the eggplant dish, the lamb biriyani dish and their garlic naan to be standouts. If you're looking for a quick meal, this is a good bet. ![]() Hong Kong (SAR) ![]() Added Jul 6, 2010 This rickety old tram is a must do at least once. This old tram takes you directly up the peak along a very very steep track. Along the way you pass through wealthy old neighbourhoods like McDonald road, etc. There can be a lineup to buy tickets but you can avoid the lines if you have pre-purchased an octopus card as you can use that to go straight to the lineups. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jul 4, 2010 I came here with friends the other day who strongly recommended the place. Given that they live in Burnaby and we drove all the way to Kerrisdale to come here is a testament to how much they liked it! Ajisai is fairly small, so be prepared to have to wait as I don't believe they take reservations. We arrived at 8:30pm and were luckily seated shortly after at the bar, where we got to watch the chefs at work. We ordered a number of items. I tried Kampachi for the first time as well as salmon and hamachi pressed sushi. We also got a spicy chopped scallop roll, their spicy salmon roll, a negitoro roll and a tamago roll. Everything was delicious and the chefs were accommodating. We wanted slightly spicier salmon, and they obliged to give us extra sauce in a dish. Between the pressed salmon and the pressed hamachi, I preferred the salmon. It's also cheaper ($11 for 6 pieces versus $15). In general I found the prices reasonable for the quality, and would definitely go back even though it's "far"! :) ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jul 4, 2010 This place was Zagat-rated, and also on Aaron's to-try list. The two together were enough to convince me it was worth a shot. I'm glad we went to try it out! I'm also glad we were forced to do the chef's choice because I got to try things I would have never chosen on my own. Our meal included two appetizers - a chicken(?) dish, housemade sausage, and 3 kinds of soup - a mussel soup, a pork soup and a mushroom vegeterian, followed by a sliced beef dish, an octopus salad, a banana flower salad, a ling cod dish, two curries, and pad thai. Everything was delicious, though at times a bit on the salty or spicy side - and we had requested mild! The real standouts were the ling cod and the banana flower salad. A good find, though at $30 plus 18% gratuity for our party of 7, not necessarily a place to frequent regularly. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jul 4, 2010 This place was highly recommended by many foodie forums so I was really excited to go. Their gyoza are pretty good but a bit pricey (works out to be about $1 per gyoza). I got the pork and vegetable gyoza, tried a few appetizer dishes. Overall not bad but found their beef also a bit salty. I'm glad I tried it, but probably wouldn't crave going back. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jul 2, 2010 My love for anything dumpling is a pretty public affair, so it's no surprise when I found out these guys are supposed to make some pretty solid Xiao Long Baos (shanghai steamed dumplings) that I jumped at the chance to go with friends. This is certainly no high class establishment, as evidenced by the orange walls, but who cares about the decor if the food is good? My friends and I ordered: 2 orders of Xiao Long Baos, one order of snow pea shoots (diao miu), braised lion's head, deluxe dian dian mein, and some fried tofu. The absolute standout were the Xiao Long Baos. They are made fresh to order -- you can watch the lady make them through the glass panel -- and they have some of the thinnest wrappers I've seen. They are so thin, that you can see the little pockets of liquid goodness held inside as you pick them up with your chopstocks. The moist, soupy dumplings arrive at just the right temperature, and were SO GOOD that we ordered thirds. The rest of the food was good, but it's just hard to compare with the dumplings. I highly recommend going just for those dumplings. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jul 2, 2010 I can't help trying to hunt down all the cupcake places in a location, and when I heard that Big City Cupcakes was the Blogger's Choice winner, I had to go and try the cupcakes out myself. I got their : Toffee, Red Velvet, Truffle, and Strawberry Shortcake. Everything was moist and flavourful. I liked it enough to go back for seconds the next day! My favourite flavour of the ones I tried was Toffee, though their Strawberry Cheesecake is what won so I'll need to go back again and try them! ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Jun 29, 2010 Came here as part of the SF dineabout event. I have been to Chez Mama many times before and loved it so I had high hopes here. Chez Papa is the more upscale version of Chez Mama. We tried a warm mustard and potato salad, steak tartare, a steak strip, and lamb. Everything was delicious and I'd definitely go back, though I may prefer the more casual Chez Mama just a wee bit more. ![]() Mountain View, California, United States ![]() Added May 28, 2010 These guys are my staple place to go if I'm too lazy to cook. Mostly because they are right across the street from me. I found their food slightly better value before the plaza renovated, but even after, it's a decent cheap Mexican food place. I usually get their tacos, their cocktail de camarrones is good too - nice and lightly spiced. My favourite part is the chip and pico bar. I normally get a nice bag of tacos and a heaping cup of pico to go with whatever else I'm eating. ![]() Mountain View, California, United States ![]() Added May 28, 2010 I remember this place being about what I'd expect for Thai food. Nothing spectacular, but nothing that really disappointed me either. Prices were also in the middle range, about $10-15 a dish. ![]() Cupertino, California, United States ![]() Added May 28, 2010 Came here spontaneously as I was craving dessert, and this was still open at 8:30 at night. I got the lingonberry crepe for $6.95. I found the crepe to be quite thick, and for price value ratio, the crepe truck in the city (in San Francisco) is far better, but the lingonberry sauce itself was good, even if a bit on the sweet side. ![]() Mountain View, California, United States ![]() Added May 28, 2010 I've only come here for the lunch buffet. If you're craving a large variety of vietnamese food, then this is the place to go. Buffets are about $12-$13 a person. There are two hot lines, a salad bar, a fruit bar, two soups and some fried entries and rice. For buffet food, it's not bad but I find many of the entries a bit lukewarm and the rolls a little bit bland. But I'm willing to forgive that a lot of times just to be able to sample a bunch of different items. It can get crowded at lunch, but they take reservations. ![]() Mountain View, California, United States ![]() Added May 28, 2010 La Bamba is best known for their burritos, but I'm not a big fan of burritos so I always get their rice plates or tacos. The meat is flavourful and moist, and the rice plates are good value in that for $10, I get 3 meals out of it. Their tamales are pretty good too. In all a quick, cheap, good greasy place if you're craving Mexican food. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added May 27, 2010 Came here to meet up with a friend for dim sum and I'm really glad we found it. Everything was delicious. I tried a few types of shrimp dumplings that I'd never tried before. Lunch for three ordering about 9 dishes came to $41. I'd definitely come here again. ![]() Sunnyvale, California, United States ![]() Added May 26, 2010 Was craving Vietnamese food again so came by Pho Wagon. It's in one of those strip malls on a side corner so not super noticeable. Service was quick, food was not bad - I ordered a seafood pho which tasted as I would expect but didn't feel like there was that extra umph. ![]() Mountain View, California, United States ![]() Added May 25, 2010 Was feeling too lazy to cook so I decided to come here. Ordered the beef carpaccio, a crepe, and pho. I thought the crepe would be these steamed rice rolls but it turned out to be an egg batter type crepe. I liked the beef dish and the pho but probably wouldn't order the crepe again. Service was fast. Would be back again to try out their garlic noodles. ![]() San Mateo, California, United States ![]() Added May 23, 2010 I'm a sucker for dessert, and anything different is totally cool. I came here one evening and got their multi-pack. The fish were good and the filling too, but I didn't like that they packed it in the box, and by the time I got the bottom layer of my fish, they were a little bit soggy from the moisture. When totally fresh, they're great! ![]() San Mateo, California, United States ![]() Added May 23, 2010 I used to come here a lot because I found their 3 rolls for $19.95 to be such a compelling offer. I'd split 2 specials with 4-5 friends and we'd be stuffed. The sushi quality wasn't spectacular, but it was pretty good for the price. Their all-you-can-eat menu I didn't find to be as good value though, as the selection is fairly limited and I was full off the 3 roll special anyway. ![]() San Mateo, California, United States ![]() Added May 23, 2010 I'd been wanting to try this place as I looooved fondue when I was in Switzerland and was totally craving it. Gathered a bunch of friends here for dinner. We got the cheese fondue appetizer, and though I had personally wanted bourguingnonne style, I was out-voted so we got court bouillon and coq au vin. The food was not bad, but the whole thing felt pricey - especially since we had coupons for the meal and it still came to $50+ per person. ![]() Palo Alto, California, United States ![]() Added May 23, 2010 I know there's such a thing as the paradox of choice, and I have to admit, the first time I went here I was a bit overwhelmed. Did certain combination go together? Was I maximizing my burger creation opportunities? After trying to give up on creating what is guaranteed to be the perfect burger, I just went with what I was in the mood for, and it turned out pretty well. I also go their sweet potato fries and those were gooood with the aioli. ![]() Mountain View, California, United States ![]() Added May 23, 2010 I'm always on the lookout for great Japanese restaurants, so when this place was recommended to me and it turned out that the restaurant was practically right under my nose, I HAD to go. I went on a Saturday for lunch, and even though it was almost 2:00, the place was still quite crowded. I asked to sit at the bar, and ordered the Sushi Tomi special roll with hamachi based on the restaurant's recommendation, and it did not disappoint. The roll had hamachi and avocado inside with salmon and scallop on top plus a spicy mayo on the side. The rolls weren't crammed full of rice rice which is nice, and it was really neat to watch them take a blowtorch to the fish. The guys beside me ordered I believe from their Omakase menu, and had an assortment of fish appetizers and fish sashimi. It looked quite interesting! On weekend lunches, sushi is 15% off, but even still, the prices aren't super cheap or anything. My roll with 8 pieces came to $12.95, which means I likely wouldn't go get rolls every day, but it was a very enjoyable sushi experience. Gotta say, man I still miss Vancouver sushi prices tho'!! ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added May 18, 2010 This is one of the first places I ever ate at inMontreal, and where I had creton (a pork pate) for the first time. I smeared it all over my toast and it was pretty good. I like Cora's because it feels really friendly. There are multiple locations in Montreal, and the one I went to was on Drummond street in Centreville. ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added May 16, 2010 Ok so every now and then I'm a total sucker for tasting menus and this was one of those places where I thought the meals were "reasonably" priced, if you can have such a thing when you're paying $50-$100 for the meal. :p I came here a few times, and though my mind wasn't blown, I really enjoyed it - enough to come on my own even when it wasn't part of a team lunch. In fact I think if I was back in Montreal again I'd probably head there again, time permitting, after stopping first at Le Jolifou and Au Pied du Cochon. :) ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added May 16, 2010 I LOVE this place. In fact, if I ever open a restaurant, I'm going to do exactly what they do. They specialize in one thing, and one thing is all they serve. Well actually, it's a 3 or 4 course menu, but it's exactly the same thing, night after night. And they do it so well. First course is soup or a walnut salad. Second course is their grilled strip loin with home fries and sauce, followed by the same predictable dessert. Profiteroles with hot chocolate sauce. Yum! ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added May 16, 2010 I'd come here when I was realllly craving sushi and needed a quick fix. :) Compared to Vancouver sushi, it's o-k. Decent enough selection, alright quality, ok prices. ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added May 16, 2010 You know those restaurants that you go to to be seen? This would be one of them. Located right on Saint Laurent within very close walking distance to a number of nightclubs, the restaurant is staffed only with attractive waiters and waitresses. So you get the idea, focus is not on the food. I came here often for team dinners, but have never otherwise come on my own. :) ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added May 16, 2010 I remember coming here often when I was at L'Oréal, usually for team dinners. :) The food was always good. My favourite dish was their risotto with wild mushrooms. ![]() Mountain View, California, United States ![]() Added May 16, 2010 After having two completely unrelated people tell me I should check this restaurant on the same day, I figured it's probably a good place to visit. While there is sushi on the menu, Kappo Nami Nami serves a range of items from salads to grilled dishes to braised dishes, noodles and more. I had planned to have a light meal, but somehow ended up ordering probably the heaviest 3 items on the menu. They were all very good but did feel a bit pricey. I had the seafood pancake (~$11), the pork belly kakuni ($9) and the lobster macaroni gratin ($14) which was delicious by WAY RICH. Would probably go for something lighter in the future. My one big complaint would be that I found the service to be very slow. I think it was over 1/2 hour between ordering and the arrival of our dishes. I'd probably go again, but probably for lunch as it looked like they had more combo items and bento options, which is my kind of thing. :) ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added May 16, 2010 My friend loves this place so, THIS was the place he suggested to go when we came to visit him. And it was definitely worth going! Their XLB's were delicious, as were the lion's heads. The dian dian mein was a bit hit and miss - first time super, second time the noodles were a bit overcooked for my liking. Their other dumplings were good too, though I was slightly disappointed with the vegetarian dumplings. The wait staff is prompt, and the prices quite reasonable. If I lived closer, I could definitely see myself frequenting this place all the time. :) ![]() Menlo Park, California, United States ![]() Added May 16, 2010 I really wanted to try something new and was feeling like Japanese and so I looked around and found this place. It's an unassuming Japanese restaurant with a large specials menu that changes all the time, plus a regular menu with various items you can order as a combo. There is not much sushi on the menu, with the restaurant focusing more on what feels like home-style food. The prices were reasonable, the food was good, but nothing so good that I'd specifically crave going. It's the type of place I'd probably visit again if I wasn't in the mood for any of my regular favourite spots, but not a place I'd make a point to trek to. ![]() Los Angeles, California, United States ![]() Added May 15, 2010 I came here after reading numerous reviews about this place, and by recommendation ordered the lamb dip. The place was very busy, but the multiple lines moved quickly so I didn't have much of a wait at all. I had expected to be served the sandwich with the dip on the side, but was surprised it comes pre-dipped. You can order it regular, double dipped, or wet. I can't imagine what wet is like as I already found regular pretty soggy. The flavour was good, the lamb was tender, but I personally couldn't get past the soggy texture of the bread. Philippe's makes their own mustard, so I put some on, and I tell ya, that stuff clears sinuses worse than wasabi. The pain that shot through my nose after my first bite was intense! The lamb dips run at about $7.95 a sandwich. Overall I enjoyed the atmosphere a bit more than the food, but was worth the visit. ![]() Monterey Park, California, United States ![]() Added May 15, 2010 I stayed here when I went to visit my aunt, and it was a fine enough place. It was clean, it came with a mini fridge, there was free internet, breakfast was included, and parking was free. I'd say the weird thing for me was that the sink was in the room by the entrance instead of the bathroom, which mean there was no place to put your stuff when you came in. It was designed like this because the bathrooms were really tiny. I also found the internet signal a little bit weak, but for $79 a night, it was fine. ![]() Monterey Park, California, United States ![]() Added May 15, 2010 I was in town visiting my aunt and arrived to the area late in the evening. This restaurant was close by, so I decided to check it out. Even at about 9:00pm on Friday, The Open Door was fairly busy and I had about a 1/2 hour wait, but that just meant I had plenty of time to decide what to eat. :) Based on the waitress' recommendation, I ordered the truffle-butter edamame, mini burgers, their braised beef, their salmon and yellowtail sashimi, and their mixed mushroom platter and a grilled rice ball. The prices ranged from $4-$13 a dish, and everything was really delicious except the rice ball. I discovered new combinations of food that I hadn't tried before. My favourites were the salmon, the braised beef and the mini burgers. The only thing about coming here though is that it is a bit of a splurge. It came to about $70 for two and we didn't order any alcohol. ![]() Causeway Bay, Hong Kong (SAR) ![]() Added Mar 27, 2010 Victoria Park is one of the largest Urban Parks, and its the gethering for many rallies and events such as lantern festival. It's also a nice place to stroll. I have to admit a soft spot for the park as I spent my earliest years in a condo next to the park. :) ![]() Zermatt, Valais Region, Switzerland ![]() Added Mar 19, 2010 I wasn't really aware that the cemetery existed until I wandered right into it during my stay in Zermatt. But given my fascination with mountaineering, it was really something to walk on these old grounds and learn the stories of those who have attempted to climb the mountains all around the valley. ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Mar 14, 2010 It's usually hard for a place to live up to expectations when its really talked up -- but I really dug their smoked meat -- and I'm not even a sandwich person! But when their sandwiches are $5.50 a piece, it's hard to go wrong. The only drawback are the long lineups, but the quaint and super packed store is absolutely worth visiting at least once. ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Mar 14, 2010 I wanted to like these guys - especially since it's hard to be a bit in the shadow of Schwartz. Main is still popular in its own right, but I have to admit I liked the flavour of Schwartz's smoked meat better...I think I'd only come here if i couldn't bear the lineup across the street. ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Mar 14, 2010 The one thing I do like eating for breakfast is crepes, and La Petite Marche had my absolute favourite crepes in the world. I loved coming here for weekend brunches, as their dishes were hearty and good. ![]() Toronto, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Mar 13, 2010 This was a place I enjoyed coming to while I lived in Toronto, whether it was for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The menu was refreshing with lots of tasty and decently priced options. ![]() San Jose, California, United States ![]() Added Mar 13, 2010 I love food and tasting menus, and was really excited to find this place. I went with a bunch of friends and family and wanted to be blown away. I wasn't, but each dish was enjoyable, and I especially loved the chocolate finacier at the end. So while I probably won't go back for some time, it was a good enough experience to try once. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Mar 13, 2010 San Francisco was doing their Dine About event, so our household up and went. I had high hopes, and in all the food was not bad, but I found the service to be dreadfully slow. It almost felt like the waiter was ignoring us. I had intended to do the Dine About menu, but because nothing jumped out at me enough so I ended up ordering on the regular menu, getting a scallop baked dish as well as a duck dish. The duck was pretty good but the seafood scallop and potato dish was forgettable. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Mar 13, 2010 I had high hopes for this place as it was recommended by a foodie friend who I respect. However as much as I did love the chimichurri that came with the meal, I just didn't feel the same kind of love for the rest of the dinner. First of all, they were completely unwilling to make any substitutes even though I knew I wasn't going to like blood sausage. And no one else at our table did either so it went to waste. Then I found the food to be dry and not that flavourful unless I drowned it in chimichurri sauce. Seemed a bit shameful for a steakhouse. Finally the prices were on the high side, so in all a bit disappointing. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Mar 13, 2010 This is a pretty popular brunch place, as evidenced by the lineups at 8:00 in the morning when the place opens that go around the block. For a breakfast place, it's pretty good, but I probably don't have a discerning enough breakfast palate to know one from another much. That said, I liked the Californian, an omlette with avocado, jack cheese and bacon, and I'd get that again again. Their sweet items like pancakes and brioche looked pretty good too. ![]() Yosemite Village, California, United States ![]() Added Mar 13, 2010 Hiked this with a bunch of friends in the spring time as the falls were still at their peak. It was a fantastic hike and the views were great. The paths were a bit crowded, but worth the viewpoint overlooking the valley when we got to the top. You can follow the falls from along the river all the way to overlooking this force cascade over the cliffs. It can get a bit windy at the top so make sure you bring a windbreaker even if it feels a bit warm near the bottom. ![]() Squamish, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Mar 12, 2010 I've only been here once, and even though I hate the cold, it was worth coming out here to camp overnight. The trail and views were beautiful. I advise you to pack warm food though! I only brought cold cuts, breads and cheeses and jealously eyed the other campers who had brought a mini portable cooking stove. Next time! :) ![]() Tofino, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Mar 12, 2010 Easy to access lookout point with beautiful sweeping views of the Clayoquot Sound. ![]() Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Mar 12, 2010 We saw this place on a turnoff and spontaneously decided to visit. It's a small site so it's worth the stop to see the fascinating petroglyph symbols depicting various creatures. The only thing that was upsetting is that the soft sandstone rock was defaced by people also carving their names into the rock alongside the petroglyphs. ![]() Sooke, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Mar 12, 2010 It was a cold and windy day, so I didn't venture too far, but I enjoyed walking along the breakwater soaking in the scenery. The Whiffen Spit is a dog friendly park so you may see others out with their dogs. A great place to relax. ![]() Sooke, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Mar 12, 2010 We were driving around Sooke totally starving, and were told that most places are closed on Mondays, and that our best bet was to drive about 20 minutes north to Point no Point. I'm glad we made that drive as the lunch spot was really delightful. It's part of a resort, but anyone can swing by for lunch. The restaurant is perched on the side of a hill overlooking the Pacific ocean and a beach below, and every table has a spectacular view. I thought it was a nice touch too that they had binoculars on every table for you to watch. The lunch menu was small but the items all looked interesting. Based on recommendations, I got the chicken confit which came with potato and a celery root salad, and my friend got the housemade hamburger. Both were absolutely delicious. Once you eat there, they also give you the access code to their private beach, and so in all a wonderful experience. ![]() Victoria, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Mar 12, 2010 I didn't even realize Mile 0 started on Vancouver Island, but it was cool to drive by and see the starting point, as well as to imagine the journey taken by Terry Fox. ![]() Victoria, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Mar 12, 2010 I was wandering around the area with looking for a place to eat, and their $14 prime rib special caught our eye. After a full circle around the block with nothing better, in we went. The place looks fairly new, with giant flat screen displays with a hockey game on. The place looked comfortable, and had a good partial view of the harbour as well. We went ahead and ordered the prime rib special, and a very hearty portion arrived. The prime rib came with mashed potatoes, veggies, yorkshire pudding, horseradish and of course the prime rib. Everything was well prepared, except I found there was way too much peppercorn sauce smothered on everything -- to the point it drowned out the prime rib taste a bit. I found myself scrapping off the sauce at which point everything was delicious. ![]() Victoria, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Mar 12, 2010 Came here craving something quick. It looked busy so in I went. I ordered my standard, which is grilled pork on vermicelli with an imperial roll and I was pleasantly surprised by how the food tastes. I typically expect my Vietnamese dishes to be between $6-7 and my dish came in at $9.95, but still good value all round. ![]() Zanzibar City, Zanzibar & Pemba, Tanzania ![]() Added Mar 12, 2010 I stayed here with friends as a place to wind down after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, and I thought it was a really great. This stately hotel / building has had a rich history, and it was as much fun to wander around and explore the premise as it was to see the city. We got a room overlooking the sea and it was such a beautiful sight watching the sun set. As much as I hate mosquito, I was mesmerized by the nightly ritual in which someone would come in every night, lower our mosquito nets, shut the drapes and spray mosquito repellent over all our nets and around the room. The beds were these tall wooden beds that made me think of the princess and the pea complete with the mosquito nets masquerading as a bed veil. A great experience. :) ![]() Victoria, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Mar 12, 2010 I stayed here after a Priceline bid ($70 for one night) and I'm very glad to have discovered this place. First of all, the hotel is conveniently located in the Inner Harbour area of Victoria within walking distance to all the major attractions. Then there is the hotel itself. This quaint boutique hotel has 64 rooms and it's evident a lot of detail has gone into the environment. You're greeted with fresh fruit (for us it was local apples) in the lobby as well as in the room on arrival, and the rooms were spacious and the beds comfortable. Surprising now for a 4 star hotel, the internet was complimentary, as were bottles of water. Even more surprising was that breakfast was included. The breakfast was advertised as a continental breakfast, and so I was expecting some muffins and yogurt in a tub. Imagine more surprise walking in to a fresh waffle maker, an assortment of cold cuts and cheeses, fruits, pastries, juices and more! Even parking was a reasonable $16 for in-out privileges (though of course I'd have preferred free :p) Aside from the facilities, I was also impressed with the staff. Everyone was friendly and courteous, even before they found out I was there to take pictures for GeckoGo. Not thinking, I responded that I was taking pictures for a review site when a lady at breakfast commented on my prolific picture taking, and the next thing I know Bill, the general manager had come up to introduce himself. I was given a tour of the rest of the facilities (which was awesome as I got to take more pics), and I'm overall left with a very favourable impression of the place. No, I didn't ask to nor was comp'd anything and yes, I'd gladly pay close to the list price (around $199/night) if I'm back during a summer peak season. :) ![]() Tofino, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Mar 12, 2010 I came here a few years ago, and still consider it to be one of my favourite dining experiences of all time. In fact I still remember what I ate! For lunch I had a seafood fennel potlache that was absolutely divine. It came in this little brass bucket and was filled to the brim with fresh local seafood. Then for dinner, I had this super delicious lamb (which I'm pretty sure was part of a set menu.) Thank goodness I was staying on site, because I was so full after I remember having trouble walking back to the room. :p Definitely worth the journey out to eat at! ![]() Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Mar 11, 2010 I read a review about this place and wanted to check it out after hearing that their eggs benedicts were supposed to be great. Unfortunately, they only make a limited amount of sauce and they usually run out quickly (on the menu it says it runs out at 1:00pm). I ordered a seafood chowder and garden salad instead. I loved that my chowder came with garlic toast which was quite tasty. The staff were really friendly and were thrilled to have us come in and I liked that they made a lot of the items from scratch daily on premise. Not a bad place to stop if you're in the area. ![]() Canada ![]() Added Mar 6, 2010 Queen Elizabeth Park is definitely one of my favourite parks to visit. I used to think it was so cliche - every time I came there was a wedding going on, but as I grow older I'm coming to appreciate why people like this site so much. Queen Elizabeth Park, or QE park as people like to call it is a beautiful park to stroll through as it's filled with sprawling lawns, beautiful flower gardens and a panoramic view of Vancouver. Definitely worth a visit! ![]() North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Mar 4, 2010 Given that Cleveland Dam is located along Capilano Road where various other attractions are situated, it's worth a stop here to stroll along the park grounds. This protected area boasts some of the cleanest water supplies in the world. There are various walking and hiking trails around. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Mar 3, 2010 I have known about Tojo's for years, and have been wanting to go to this place for almost as long. But I always thought I'd wait for a special occasion. Finally I decided, to heck with the special occasion and booked an evening there. Apparently the only way to experience Tojo's is through their Omakase menu, so I opted for the 5 course Omakase for $80. I wanted to sit at the bar (make sure you ask) but it was a very crowded evening so we were not able to do so. The waiter was attentive, asking us what our likes and dislikes were as well as any allergies, and then the food started coming. First course: A sort of tuna tartare with ginger and cucumber in a broth. Delicious. Second course: A salad with slices of fresh fish. Third course: Pan seared halibut? with mushrooms and Tojo's special sauce Fourth course: Deep fried tuna roll wrapped in seaweed Fifth course: A selection of sushi Dessert: Sesame panacotta Overall the food was absolutely delicious and some of the elements were surprisingly good (for instance I hate shiso but the flavour went very well with the items). I enjoyed each course thoroughly, though at the end of the day it's still hard to say whether it was worth the cost. It was definitely a head above other sushi places I go to for sure though. Maybe I'll have to go back again to try more dishes to decide. ;) ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Mar 3, 2010 I was planning on trying out Kintaro when a lady stopped me on the street and urged me to go to Motomachi instead. Apparently she says they have the same owners, but she thought this place was tastier and healthier. I was determined to try Kintaro that day anyway, but my curiosity was piqued to come back and try this place. The decor of Motomachi is much nicer, and correspondingly the prices are a few dollars more, but there's usually much less of a wait. Unlike Kintaro where you can choose between different fattiness of broths, there's only the option that comes with the broth flavour you choose. I found it flavourful and tasty, and the presentation beautiful, but it was not outstanding. I'd come back if I was in the area and craving ramen, but this wouldn't be a destination place for me. ![]() Portland, Oregon, United States ![]() Added Mar 1, 2010 My friend found this place as we were doing a marathon drive from San Francisco up to Vancouver Canada for the Olympics. After eating nothing but chips and donuts, we wanted real food and he found Tin Shed. We were there on a Monday morning and the place was hopping. The crowd seemed pretty young and the environment comfortable. The menu was fun, with dishes like "Sweet Chix", "Everything Naughty"and "Belly Pleaser". There was a lunch menu as well, but it's clear that breakfast is the star. I got the "Stay", which is potato cakes topped with yams, zucchini, mushrooms, an egg scramble and a white gravy. It hit the spot and was very delicious. The portions were not massive, but the price is also really good at $7.25 for my item. Even at a normal size plate I didn't finish what I had. If I was in the area, I'd definitely come back and try some of the other items. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Feb 7, 2010 I'm not even a big fan of donuts normally, but this place is awesome. It's founded by a trained pastry chef who decided to apply her skills to donuts. So you end up with these high quality organic donuts in flavours like candied orange blossom, lemon thyme, and maple-glazed apple bacon. For these kinds of flavours, $2-$3.50 a donut is definitely worth it! ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 30, 2010 Just about anyone I know in Vancouver knows about this Greek restaurant. Stepho's has been around forever, and it's most well known for its generous portions at decent prices. In all, it's not a bad restaurant, though I don't know if the wait is worth it on busy days. My favourite Greek restaurant in the Vancouver area is still Socrates on Hastings street in Burnaby, but it's definitely worth a visit if you're here during a quieter time in the day. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 19, 2010 This place has been around forever, and I always wondered - what exactly do Translyvanian sweets taste like? Finally I was walking by on the street so I decided to stop in and try some of the goods. I tried this giant cone shaped pastry that's hollow as well as their sunshine cake, which is a whipped cream and fresh fruit cake. Not bad, but nothing spectacular either. ![]() Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 18, 2010 Came here for their dinner buffet, which at $20 gave a pretty good selection of items both hot and cold. I tried for the first time something called "Candied Salmon", which was delicious. Their regular menu looks pretty good with prime rib and seafood in the $20-$35 range. Nice atmosphere. ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Jan 14, 2010 The Saint Joseph's Oratory is one of the most striking buildings in Montreal. I enjoyed walking around the various paths to the basilica. It's a great place for pictures on a sunny spring day. ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Jan 13, 2010 A familiar street for me as L'Oreal Canada's old headquarters were on the street. There are lots of great restaurants and various nightclubs here. It's also fun just to walk down the street and look at the buildings. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 13, 2010 One of the most popular beaches in Vancouver, Jericho beach is a popular destination for picnics, beach volleyball, and wedding photos. The beach has the the north shore mountains and downtown Vancouver as its backdrop. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 13, 2010 This is one of Vancouver's most iconic buildings. In the summertimes, I love wandering around the building as there are great views of the North shore mountains from Canada Place. Within Canada place is also an IMAX theatre and if the time works, I always stop by to catch a show. There's often a two show special if you catch it at the right time. ![]() North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 13, 2010 Came here when I first arrived to the area. It was a great introduction to salmon's lifecycle and the hurdles they go through to breed! There's a self guided tour that takes about 1/2 hour to go through. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 13, 2010 While it's not the most extensive amusement park compared to some of the theme parks in the US, Playland has been around forever, and and as the only amusement park within the lower mainland, it's the place to go if you're in the mood, or visiting Vancouver for more than a few days. Located on Hastings street with the north shore mountains as a backdrop, all the usual suspects are there - arcade games, rollercoasters, slides and more. ![]() Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 12, 2010 Found this bakery by accident. I was trying out a new sushi place and it wasn't yet open, so to kill time I wandered into the bakery. While a fairly non-descript looking bakery on the outside, the selection of almond flavoured desserts caught my interest pretty fast and I decided to buy a bunch. I'm sure glad I did as they were very tasty! My favourites were the Kransekage, which had a chewy almond filling and their rum log. The marizipan slice was what got my attention first, but the layer of marzipan is pretty thin and most of it was cake, so I'm not sure if I'll get that again. I liked that everything was not too sweet and the almond flavour was nice and strong. Looking forward to going back for more! ![]() Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 11, 2010 Came here for a friend's birthday dinner. The place was packed and it's clear Peter's Pasta is a popular hangout. Most of the pasta is made fresh on premise, and the portions are quite healthy. A nice option if you're craving pasta and Italian food and are in the area. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 8, 2010 I was scouting restaurants to visit when I spied this dessert place. I was already going to Hapa Izakaya for dinner but convinced the gang we'd save room for dessert here. Chicco makes assorted japanese style dessert parfaits with multiple layers of ice cream, corn flakes, cakes and sweet cream. Options include caramel, black sesame, green tea and more. The place is cash only and the parfaits were a bit expensive ($7), but worth the splurge as they were fun to eat and very light. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 8, 2010 I kept hearing Aaron talk about this Samurai Sushi place for ages. Apparently it's a popular student place, and understandably so for its prices! $3.5 for a california roll that's huge! Normally I'd order 1-2 rolls, but I could probably just eat half of the bigger rolls and be STUFFED off that. The food isn't gourmet, but it's filling, doesn't have too much rice, and excellent value. I'd go back for sure. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 8, 2010 I'd heard about this place from my roommate, and since this location was only 3 blocks away from where I'm staying, I decided I had to get one. I opted to split the bratwurst and the kurobuta hot dog, which was topped with grilled onions, teriyaki sauce, japanese mayo and seaweed. The hotdog sauces were surprisingly good. Worth a stop if you're in the area. One note: Depending on the location, the lineups can be long. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 8, 2010 When I heard that my friend had ordered an "Earl Grey Chocolate Mousse Cake", I had to go and try out the place. This small bakery is not easy to find (given it's poor signage), but once I was actually in the friendly looking bakery I was captivated by the desserts. Options like "vanilla bean lemon cheesecake", "green tea chestnut", and raspberry cupcakes with real fruit blended in the buttercream were highly tempting. The prices were not cheap - $5.50 for the pastries, $2.50 for the cupcakes, but I loved the flavours and the small attention to detail. I ordered four small cakes which Kaeko taped to the bottom of the box so they wouldn't move before adding tissue paper between each so they don't smudge. Every label was also slightly folded to make peeling back the plastic wrap easier. I'd definitely go and try her other flavours in the future! ![]() Richmond, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 6, 2010 Stopped by here on a whim. Decided to be spontaneous and pulled into the first plaza I saw. Was craving vietnamese so came in. First impressions is that the place was very tiny. The menu was also equally small - about 10 items. We ordered a beef stew with noodles , a chicken noodle soup and a chicken sub. All were tasty, seemed very home-style. Sub was very well seasoned and I'd say my only complaint would be that I thought there should be slightly more meat. But the baguette tasted fresh and crispy. Note this place is cash only! ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 2, 2010 There are a lot of thai places near my house, and I generally like to cook thai at home, so I had high expectations of this place. Nothing totally blew my mind, but every dish was well prepared and tasty at reasonable prices ($9.95 - $13.95 for most dishes). We ordered a stir-fry squid dish, a stir-fry noodle dish, panang curry with fish and a vegetable curry dish. I liked them all quite well. Only caveat about the place I would say is that the medium was MUCH spicier than I thought, so order with caution! Overall a good place to go if you're in Vancouver and craving thai. ![]() Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 2, 2010 I don't know what's happened to Sui Shi Ya, but this place has gone WAY downhill. It used to be a staple restaurant for me, but I just went back yesterday and something's happened. The metrotown location was recently rennovated, so it looks nicer, but that's the only positive for the restaurant. Lunch all you can eat was $12.95. That doesn't include any sashimi any more. The rice for all the rolls were mushy, and had much more rice than any kind of filling (fish, crab meat, even vegetables). The miso soup that we got was lukewarm, and everything was thoroughly mediocre. With so many other decent all you can eat sushi places, I will never come back. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Dec 31, 2009 My mom's friend's husband is a chef and this was the place he recommended, so off we went. Even though we had reservations, we ended up waiting for about 15 minutes. The place is known for crab, but I didn't end up trying crab as I'd just finished eating crab the last few days. Mentioning in case anyone wants to try them! I ordered chow mein, a catfish claypot and a bird's nest. The food was all good, but it was probably a bad move as the chow mien and the seafood bird's nest tasted quite similar. I'd probably skip the bird's nest in the future as the bowl was a bit greasy, but the food was all fairly well prepared. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Dec 31, 2009 I went to this place by accident. I actually meant to go Kobe but forgot the name of the restaurant. I arrived and realized my mistake, but by then reservations had been made so I figured, what the heck, let's go with the flow. I came on New Year's eve and they had 3 fixed menu. I got the first option which came with squid, scallops and fish, some sort of beef and vegetables. The two others at the table got the second option which comes with foie gras. We ended up splitting everything so I got to taste it all. I suppose the quality of the food depends on the chef who's cooking it. Our chef seemed nice and threw in a few entertaining tricks (which apparently this restaurant doesn't do much of). He also had a sense of humour. Food was nicely prepared (maybe a touch bit too salty), meat and seafood were tender. Overall good. I'm not quiiiite sure it was worth $38-$42, but it was pretty decent, and for a special occasion taking the family out, I suppose it was worth it. Their normal menus are in the $26-$38 range. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Dec 31, 2009 Came here after my roommate talked about this restaurant for about 1/2 a year. Heard that they don't take reservations and the lineups are legendary so I arrived at 5:15 or so only to miss the first seating by one table. Wait time? 1.5 hours. They asked if we wanted to sit in the lounge to wait but we opted to add our name to the list and wander around. After about 45 minutes I came back. What's nice is, even though you have to wait, they are serving complementary appetizers the whole time. We got seated much earlier than expected, after about 50 minutes. We told the waiter it was our first time, and he suggested that he put together a selection of five dishes. One from our table is allergic to seafood so we had the lamb popsicles, the beef tenderloin, the chicken with saffron and two vegetarian dishes. The recommendations were all spot on. The beef was sooo tender, and I think that must have been my favourite. The saffron sauce with the chicken was so delicious we got extra naan to sop up all the sauce. Naan and rice were served in as much quantities as you'd like, and if you ask for chai, that's also provided. Their chai was yummy! I think our table must have had 3-4 refills each! Another neat thing is that all the chefs are female. There's a window that you can peek into so I had fun watching them prepare our food. Overall a great experience and I'm glad we finally went. ![]() Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Dec 31, 2009 Hard to really truly judge the quality of this place as I got takeout. I'd heard good things and had high hopes. Arrived at 11:30 in the morning to find out they were only open at 12:00, so waited the 1/2 hour for them to open. By then I was ready to order and got the following: Salmon Sashimi, Hokkigai Sashimi, Paradise Roll, California Roll, Deep Fried California Roll, Volcano Roll, Spicy Salmon Sashimi. I'm really particular about my spicy salmon so I tried to ask them what kind of sauce they used. Understandably it's secret so they wouldn't tell me. Really though, all I wanted to know is if it was chili oil based or that chili paste stuff. They wouldn't tell me that either nor show me the sauce. Oh well. :( I ordered only a 1/2 batch then just to be sure, and thankfully for that because the sauce was not the kind I liked. Rest of the rolls were good, the Paradise roll has mango slices and a sweet sauce. I didn't love the deep fried california roll but did think the volcano roll (similar with scallops on top and a black sesame type sauce) was pretty good. The real crab meat california roll is worth the extra $2 ($5.95 instead of $3.95). Overall, seemed decent, but not fantastic. ![]() Saratoga, California, United States ![]() Added Dec 26, 2009 Came here for my roommate's birthday since I'd heard from a foodie friend that this was one of the best places to go. It did not disappoint. We got the set menu and the portions were not large - each course was a few bites, but I was completely full at the end of the dinner which is the way to go. We opted to add on the foie gras torchon - split it 4 ways, and that was very delicious and worth the add on. I think the highlights for me were the duck with baby shitake mushrooms and the foie gras and duck confit cupcake. The chicken noodle soup was ok and probably was the weakest in the course. The menu changes all the time with what's seasonal, so check their web site for the latest menu. ![]() Richmond, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Dec 25, 2009 We were looking for a new Chinese restaurant to try and this place was recommended. It's located in Aberdeen Mall on the 2nd floor and it specializes in Northern Chinese cuisine. We ordered a few standards - Lion's Head, Dan Dan Mien, deep fried bun with condensed milk, stirfried pea sprouts and some XLB's (Xiao Long Bao). The lion's head was pretty good, but found the noodles (dan dan mien - noodles in seasame paste) very over cooked. The XLB's and sprouts were well done. Prices seemed reasonable (in the $10-$20) range. I'd probably go back if I was in the area and craving northern chinese food, but probably wouldn't make a special trek. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Dec 25, 2009 Phnom Penh has been around for ever, but I only had the chance to try it recently. This Vietnamese/Cambodian restaurant is located on a quiet street in Chinatown but boy does it get packed! I arrived at 5:00pm for dinner and by 5:30 every table in the room was packed. Based on recommendations, we ordered the butter beef (thin carpaccio slices of beef with a lime/fish sauce/shallot dressing), their fried chicken wings (with a nice garlic taste), deep fried squid, some veggies and beef. The food was served fast and all of it tasted really good. Prices were reasonable - about $15-$20 a person. Definitely worth a visit! Update: I came back a second time and ordered from their Vietnamese menu. Very disappointing! Stick with the Cambodian menu if you come. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Dec 25, 2009 I went to this place because I kept hearing that it was one of the best ramen houses in Vancouver. Came during a weekday and was lucky enough to get seated right away (normally the place can be really packed, but service is rather quick so you should get through soon.) Most of the ramen come in three types: lean, medium and rich. I had heard that medium was the best way to go so I ordered a Shoyu ramen medium with lean pork. Another at our table decided to just go all out and order rich. I sat in the bench area overlooking the kitchen area, and as I watched ramen being prepared I began to wonder if I made the right decision. They literally scoop up pieces of fat and shake pieces into your bowl ... and the giant pots of bubbling fat was...not the most appetizing thing. About 10 minutes after we ordered our food came. One sip of the broth and I knew it was too rich for me. The broth however was nicely flavoured and the noodles were good. I tried some of the rich broth and was really glad I didn't have that. It tasted like drinking fat! Can you believe on top of that you can order butter as a topping? Overall I'd say it's not a bad ramen place, but I usually prefer my ramen a bit less greasy and I prefer a slightly different broth flavour. It's gotten generally good feedback though so worth a shot if you're in the area. ![]() Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong (SAR) ![]() Added Nov 28, 2009 It was the second last day of my stay in Hong Kong, and I was looking for something quick. After wandering around the various shopping centres around Tsim Sha Tusi, I picked this place since it looked really busy and had a mini line (ah I'm a sucker for signalling). The wait wasn't too long - about 15 minutes, so I put my name on the list and was seated shortly. The menu was fairly extensive - especially on the dessert side, but I opted for something fairly safe - a plate of sashimi and some salad. It was decent both in quality and price given where I was, but nothing totally remarkable. I'd considered it a safe place to stop and eat, but nothing to make a trek for. ![]() San Juan, Puerto Rico ![]() Added Nov 24, 2009 I was only in Puerto Rico for a few hours, but it was neat to walk through the fortress ground, see the old walls and canons. Apparently this for tis the largest of its kind built by the Spanish in the "New World." Worth a visit if you're in the area. ![]() Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands ![]() Added Nov 23, 2009 Voted one of the prettiest beaches in the world, Megan's Bay is definitely worth a visit if you're at Saint Thomas. It can get crowded, so I actually preferred to admire it from one of the neighbouring windy roads, but any way you want to do it, the beach is worth a visit. ![]() Davenport, Florida, United States ![]() Added Nov 23, 2009 I am NOT a breakfast person. I don't do pancakes, I don't like eating eggs, toast and bacon. But I was tired as heck one evening and the Waffle House was right across the motel in which I was staying so I had to try the place. And boy was I pleasantly surprised! It was dinner so I got their southern pork shop dish and found it to be well seasoned and tender. The cooking area is open so I got to see them cook and prep and after serving us, the cook came up and explained the little extra touches he added. It was really nice of him, and certainly not what I expected for a place I'd normally equate with Denny's. In fact I was so pleasantly surprised I even decided to order a waffle! My pecan waffle was pretty tasty, and even though they don't give you real butter I ate the whole thing. I'd say the Waffle House is probably your best bet if you somehow end up staying out here in the middle of nowhere. :) Oh, and the portions were so big I shared them and after tip and waffle it still came to like $15. ![]() Sunnyvale, California, United States ![]() Added Nov 23, 2009 Came here because the Vietnamese place I was itching to try was closed. Food was ok, I ordered the appetizer platter and the panang seafood curry. Nothing was bad, but unfortunately nothing was a real standout. Service was ok. I had to make eye contact with the waitress several times before she would come and take our order. Likewise for the bill. It seemed like she didn't really enjoy her job. ![]() Sonoma, California, United States ![]() Added Nov 23, 2009 I like wine but I LOVE food so any place that combines the two is bliss to me. Viansa Winery is located on your way out from Sonoma, so I usually stop there at the end of a trip to the region. My favourite thing about them is their giant market place with dozens of sauces, spreads and jams for you to try. And of them all, my absolute favourite thing is their raspberry caramel sauce. Funny thing is I'm so distracted by the food that I don't think I've ever tried their wine! It's a cute place to stop for a break. ![]() Toronto, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Nov 23, 2009 One of my favourite places to visit during my 6 months of living in Toronto. Favourite thing to do? Snack on different things from various stalls and buy really spicy ginger beer from this one Caribbean store. The stores range from spice merchants to army surplus to cute boutique stores and nice little cafes and restaurants. ![]() Palo Alto, California, United States ![]() Added Nov 23, 2009 I absolutely love Korean food, but unfortunately my roommates haven't been a big fan. Well I finally discovered a place so good that they're not only willing to go with me, they are insisting on going! You don't go to the So Gong Dong Tofu House for the decor - it feels like someone's sparse living room. But the service is splendid, the staff incredibly attentive, the side dishes plentiful and mains realllly good. For $11.95 you get a piled up high plate of spicy pork with as many side dishes as you can finish. Their hot bubbly tofu pot is tasty and filling, and their Jap Chae is super delicious. I went a couple days ago and already can't wait to go back! ![]() Britannia Beach, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Nov 23, 2009 Driving by all those times on the way to Whistler, I always thought this was the coolest building around. It's situated on a side of a cliff and was once an active mine. Walk through real mining tunnels and see the types of rock and minerals to be found in the area. The location is pretty scenic too so it makes for a nice extended lunch stop. ![]() Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, United States ![]() Added Nov 23, 2009 One of the oldest stores in Bethlehem, the Moravian Bookshop is filled with all sorts of interesting things to browse through. A particular highlight is their selection of Moravian stars - a type of star ornament that originated from the region. Worth a stroll! ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Nov 5, 2009 I love this market! Back when I lived in Montreal, I would take an empty backpack, take the metro all the way from Guy-Concordia all the way to Jean Talon (40 mins?) and just totally stuff my bag with as much as I could carry home. Jean Talon is filled primarily with fruits and veggie stands in the middle, but all around are various vendors selling snacks, sausages and more. Just outside the market were Vietnamese restaurants and on the other side, an Italian neighbourhood which had the BEST Italian pastries. Ok, I mean I'd stuff my bag with veggies and then still manage to lug a full-sized almond cake home. The balancing act was worth it, and even just for a nice sunday stroll. :) ![]() Menlo Park, California, United States ![]() Added Nov 5, 2009 Came across this place by accident, but it's one of my favourite places to eat in the area. Serving Turkish food, my favourite things at this place are their appetizer platter and manti, whichi s this beef dumpling that's served with yogurt sauce. Really good! They serve warm pita, which inevitable means I am way full by the mains. Perfect way to order is to go as a group and order 1 appetizer and 2 mains. ![]() Saint-Sauveur-des-Monts, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Oct 15, 2009 This is one of the closest places to go skiing from Montreal, and it's not bad. It won't be challenging enough for the triple-black-diamond folks, but for the rest of us it's good enough to get away and out there on the slopes. They've got a snow making and the weather is cold enough that you can guarantee a pretty long snow season. ![]() New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Oct 15, 2009 Similar to the Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco or Granville Island, the New Westminster Quay is a nice place to stroll if you're in the area. Little shops, restaurants, and produce stands fill the market area. ![]() Paris, Ile-de-France, France ![]() Added Oct 2, 2009 The first time I came to France, this place was recommended as a nice area to walk around. If you have time, stopping at one of the cafés to relax and watch the people pass by is a nice way to spend the afternoon. It was here that I discovered Pâte de Fruit - fruit flavoured jellies. Yum! ![]() Menlo Park, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 Came here for Katy's birthday. It's a pretty upscale place but I'm afraid the quality of the food (which was excellent) is a bit lost on me. I appreciated the presentation, the taste was great, but I couldn't get my head around $28 for lunch when I was still a bit hungry at the end. A piece of uni I think was something like $7? Katy said it was the best piece of uni she's ever had though, so I'm glad we came here :) ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 Our friends used to live in the neighbourhood, so I've visted Chez Maman a few times. I like that it's a cozy little bistro and that you can hear the owners speaking French to one another. I also like sitting on the counter and watching the food cooking in action. I'd say things are a little bit on the pricey side ($10.95 for a burger before toppings), but it's good enough that it's worth it. I love their fries with garlic aioli. Yum! ![]() Chicago, Illinois, United States ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 I had my heart set out for Frontera, but given the 3 hour line up, that option was out. On the advice of my roommate that Chicago is all about steak and pizza, we set out to look for a steakplace. Tango Sur seemed like a good enough option, and we arrived, added ourselves to the list (no reservations accepted) and prepared to wait. And wait. 1.5 hours later we were seated. By then I was famished and tired, so was excited to order. Looking around at the portions, we decided to split a bife vesuvius. Good call because not only was the steak a bit too cooked for me, it was way salty! Not my idea of a good meal, and was disappointing to me since I was only in Chicago one night. To add insult to injury, the service was terrible! We'd ask for something, then ask again, and again, and never got it. Finally we asked for the bill a good three to four times, actually got it, and vowed not to return. ![]() Cortina d'Ampezzo, Veneto Region, Italy ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 I didn't stay here overnight, but did stay for lunch and the hearty local meal was scrumptious. I had for the first time Casiunziei, a spinach and beet ravioli that I liked enough to try to make at home. And that's not to mention the views from the rifugio. It's perched at the edge of the mountain so you have sweeping views out all the windows with more on the deck. For those afraid of heights, the cable car can be a bit daunting, but if you are in shape and have time, you can also walk up. The bathrooms seemed clean enough, though a bit cold (as rifugios usually are). A peek at the bedrooms seem to look clean. ![]() San Cassiano, Trentino-Alto Adige Region, Italy ![]() Added Sep 30, 2009 I stayed at this hotel as part of a tour with Dolomite Mountains, and while this place is pricey -- 230-700€ for rooms, 330-1200€ for suites (disclosure: I didn't pay the full rates), I'd gladly do so the next time I'm in the region (am already working on convincing the gang.) What was impressive were the small details. Hugo Pizzinini personally helped me take my suitcase to my room, and I noticed him and his wife interacting and greeting hotel guests everywhere I went. When I had internet problems (wireless access is 5 € flat for the duration of your stay), they insisted on personally coming upstairs to my room to help me. The staff seemed to remember who we were, and were considerate of our needs at every point. That's not to mention the rooms - not only were they spacious and comfy, but I was delighted to see a freshly baked cupcake waiting from me from St Hubertus, their 2 star Michelin restaurant. (Being hungry helped with that impression :p) The only small hiccup I had was that the hot water stopped working while I was in the middle of a shower. Given that it was raining that day and I was already drenched and shivering, I wasn't too excited. One mention to the front desk though and they sent someone to fix it immediately. The hotel also has character and personality. We had a chance to chat with Hugo, and he told stories about being a hotel baby growing up on the premise, watching his father and grandfather at work. There's clearly a lot of pride in the family about this hotel, and the care and details show. Thanks to my roommate, I got to stay in a suite at the Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay, and I definitely enjoyed this experience more. If you're in the area and really feel like splurging, ask about their private mountain huts. You get a quiet night all to yourself after a delicious dinner cooked just for you. I'm planning already! ![]() Toronto, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Sep 27, 2009 Came here because I was totally craving sushi, and wanted a place that was open and would be decent. A bunch of reviews on a food forum saying this would be a good place to check out confirmed the decision. It was a hot day so I wasn't too hungry so I split the sashimi combo and got a california roll. The portions were not large, but I quite liked what I had. The people sitting beside me said that the Japanago roll is a must try. I'll have to check that out the next time I'm in Toronto. ![]() Valparaiso, Indiana, United States ![]() Added Sep 27, 2009 I'm not normally a burger person, but when an entire forum of people said this is the best burger joint in the area, I figured I'd take that over eating at Wendy's. I'm glad I did. These homestyle burgers have really fresh ingredients. I like that their beef patties were a little bit crispy on the edge. The cheese fries looked amazing, but sadly I was in a rush and didn't actually get to eat them. I'd recommend it for a quick snack or lunch. ![]() Chicago, Illinois, United States ![]() Added Sep 27, 2009 My friend came to Chicago to do a marathon the week before I was going to be in the area for a wedding. Given that she's a total foodie, I knew anything she recommended would be good. And she said this was not to be missed. I was so determined to come visit, that I got everyone up at 7:00am to drive from Valpo over to Chicago -- some people even skipped sleep to be awake for the departure car --to arrive at 8:20am...only to find out the place opened at 9:00. :p But it was actually a good thing in the end because there was a lineup out the door before the place opened. And it was GOOD. White chocolate pancakes, lemon ricotta, pear, chocolate tower french toast. OMG, the smells and the sights around were getting me all giddy. :) I ordered the white chocolate pretzel pancake, which was a great balance of sweet and salty, my friend ordered the strawberry pancakes, the rest ordered eggs benedicts and all were worth the trek. Would definitely come here for breakfast if I am in town again. ![]() Cortina d'Ampezzo, Veneto Region, Italy ![]() Added Sep 15, 2009 A comfy hotel with spacious suites. There is free wifi in the lobby but the fee for the rooms is quite expensive. Overlooks great views of the Dolomites as well as the Olympic ski jump. The food is so-so but the staff is quite friendly. ![]() Half Moon Bay, California, United States ![]() Added Aug 28, 2009 A phone call from my roommates and a photo of the dishes they had ordered convinced me to also come here for brunch. This busy cafe has an eclectic collection dishes on the menu - so much so that at first I was worried about their ability to make these dishes well. My worries disappeared the moment my plate appeared in front of me. Great taste and decent value. :) ![]() Los Angeles, California, United States ![]() Added Aug 28, 2009 Having been to Mario Batali's more casual restaurant, Pizzeria Mozza, I was curious to see what his more formal restaurant was like. The opportunity to eat at Osteria Mozza came up when Pizzeria Mozza was fully booked. Service was impeccable, the food was delicious - especially the 99% chocolate cake. At the end of it though, as good as everything was, I did find the price point too high to say it was great value. Would I go again? Probably, but not without a very special occasion or a very big raise. ![]() Beverly Hills, California, United States ![]() Added Aug 28, 2009 The way I'd describe this place is a 2 star hotel trying to be a 4 star. You could definitely tell from the first moment walking in that it's a party hotel. Lots of hyper-dressed people were split between the lobby and the rooftop pool area. While it'd certainly be a fun place to party, it wasn't a comfy place to sleep. The decor tried hard to be trendy, but didn't come across as quality. The bed was extremely uncomfortable (I woke up with a backache), and I'm still really surprised there was no bathtub and the water pressure was somewhat week. I would never consciously choose to stay here again. The only saving grace was their shampoo and conditioner, which for once didn't dry my hair out. :) ![]() West Hollywood, California, United States ![]() Added Aug 28, 2009 It was a last minute decision to come to this restaurant. I've been a big fan of Gordon Ramsay's show "Kitchen Nightmares" (the UK version, not the US which has too much drama). And I was intrigued by the good value offerings he'd talked to restaurant owners about creating. Given that I was only in town for the weekend, it seemed like now would be the opportunity to try them. As luck would have it, they were open for brunch and they had space, so off we went. Sunday brunch is a 3-course affair. Including the champagne the brunch is $40 USD, and you're to choose one appetizer, one entree and one dessert. I'll say at the end of that I was totally stuffed and ready to roll out. First course options included french toast, gravalax, a fois gras chawanmushi, risotto, the second course included a london burger, pig's belly, a pasta cabonara and rib eye, and dessert included lemon tart, chocolate fondant, a rhubarb panacotta and more. Since there were 5 of us we had a chance to sample a bunch of different meals. The appetizer was surprisingly large, and I got almost full off that. The gravalax was even better than I expected, and I enjoyed the risotto and the fois gras chawanmushi. The highlight of the second course is definitely the pigs belly, though I'd have to say I wasn't adventurous enough to try the pigs brains that also came with the course. Dessert to me was a bit of a letdown. While it was good, it had the weakest presentation. I also found some of the desserts too sweet for my liking. Overall though, it was worth a visit, and to me worth the price. ![]() Glendale, California, United States ![]() Added Aug 28, 2009 While there are a tonne of great Mexican restaurants around me, they are usually of the greasy spoons variety. I was down here for the weekend with my roommates and I wanted a sit down place that was sliiightly nicer. Learning that they had good chips and mole, I decided it was a must stop. And literally we got off the plane in Burbank and drove straight there. There was a large lineup outside when I arrived, but the cleared through everyone quickly. What was supposed to be a 20 minute wait turned into 5. The restaurant is extremely spacious (apparently a new location) - a sign of a popularity. :) Soon after sitting down, a friendly server dropped down two bowls of chips and two containers of salsa - one made with tomatillos and a fire roasted salsa. They were GOOD. We were off to a great start. :) We quickly ordered the nachos plate with pork and guacamole, which was super amazing, got a pitcher of margaritas that quickly made me super drunk, and also a mole platter that was as good as it was talked up to be. Overall a very satisfying experience. :) ![]() Burlingame, California, United States ![]() Added Jun 15, 2009 I love sushi and I love trying new restaurants, so when a friend said this would be a great restaurant to try I was all on board. Immediately I could see from the menu that we wouldn't be served any standard sushi. We got the Lobster salad roll, Lovers Cove (soft shell crab and deep fried), the Fantastic roll (with a kiwi sauce) and three other rolls. I'm often skeptical of fusion stuff finding it overpriced and all, but I have to say I really enjoyed this. :) It did end up being pretty darn expensive ($110 for 6 rolls + 1 split dessert for 4 people), but worth the very infrequent splurge. :) ![]() Causeway Bay, Hong Kong (SAR) ![]() Added Jun 6, 2009 I'm in love with this place. Seriously, every single time I'm in HK, and then every single possible day I can get myself near one of these places, I go. Ok, so maybe it's because I'm in love with mango, but the "mango drinks" as I dub my beverage of choice at this place is totally awesome. They do these multi-layered fruit drinks with fruit puree, fresh fruit and jelly or sago or a whole bunch of other combinations. The fruit drinks are mostly for take out, though if you pay more you can sit inside to have your drink. The prices range from $17-$22 HKD, with discounts for buying two drinks sometimes. Worth trying at least once, or more if you're like me. :) ![]() Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam ![]() Added Jun 6, 2009 I really wanted to like this place. A really good cooking school, AND the Lonely Planet Guidebook highly recommended this place. Yet I found the food not that special and extremely pricey for Vietnam. Actually, at $68 USD for two people without wine, I'd say it was about as pricey as a nice restaurant back home. I had ordered the set meal, which was about a 5 course meal. It started off great with a seafood soup and a seafood dish, but the rest of it (soft shell crab, imperial rice, eggplant dish) actually didn't taste much different to me than a regular chinese restaurant. In the end, I found a waaay cheaper local stop like Cha Ca La Vong to be a much better bet. Still, I've been told by more than one "local" that this is the spot they bring out of town guests to, so if you have multiple days, you may as well stop and check it out. ![]() Sunnyvale, California, United States ![]() Added Jun 6, 2009 Super simple cheap Chinese food. Pretty big portions, nothing spectacular but not bad either. Good place to go if you're in a hurry. ![]() Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong (SAR) ![]() Added Jun 6, 2009 It was like 9:30pm at night, I was totally starving and looking for a place to eat fast. I walked by this place and was surprised to see it was still super crowded at night. I'm a big fan of sushi so seeing the crowd + menu, decided to give it a shot. Place was pretty good value for it being in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui. My only complaint was that the service was a bit slow! The drinks looked really creative and interesting. Wish I had a chance to try that. I got crab cakes, a salad and a sashimi platter to share. ![]() Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam ![]() Added May 25, 2009 The guidebook prices that I read were off so the Pho 24 prices were a bit higher than I expected going in, but still incredible value and very tasty at the end. Great midday snack or breakfast - plus given that Hanoi is the place to go for Pho and Pho 24 is the place best recommended by locals - you have to give this place a try! ![]() Causeway Bay, Hong Kong (SAR) ![]() Added May 21, 2009 I came across Mak's Noodle Ltd as I was wandering around Causeway Bay. Right after you cross the street outside the Sogo if you turn left there's a street just chalk full of restaurants. I wandered up and down looking for a place to go and then just decided to stop here. As it turns out, the place had been written up by Gourmet magazine. Food service in these types of places are extremely fast and Mak's was no exception. Within minutes of ordering (a wonton noodle soup, some dumplings and some gailan), I had it sitting in front of me. Food was extremely well prepared, very tasty. It would have gotten 5 stars except there was a fly floating in the soup (may have landed post serving), and a small worm in the gailan. ![]() Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam ![]() Added May 14, 2009 After hiking through the villages in Sapa, I wanted to know more about the minority groups of Vietnam, which the Museum of Ethnology is great for. The museum decor is pretty basic and features mostly glass displays of the various examples of tools and materials used by the different ethnic groups, but still fascinating nonetheless. Given that there are 54 ethnic groups, the coverage of them is very cursory, but it gives you a taste of what you might see if you spend more time at some of the villages. There are some videos demonstrating the different crafts but the video quality is pretty poor and it has no audio or is in Vietnamese. The outdoor section was pretty cool as they actually built full sized replicas of different buildings -- and to make the buildings as authentic as possible they actually requested the minority groups to come in and build these structures. It takes a 30 min cab ride to get there as it's on the west end of town, so you might want to start with the museum and work your way back into downtown Hanoi. ![]() Sa Pa, North Vietnam-West, Vietnam ![]() Added May 12, 2009 I wanted to like this hotel. I arrived on a misty morning and the light fog over this hotel perched on the edge of a cliff really gave it a mystical feel. The staff was also really attentive, responding to our requests and upgrading our room for free when we had problems. Sadly though I had problems. The plumbing didn't work in the first room and flooded the bathtub when we tried to take showers. Also on the 2nd floor, there is a bit of a stagnant water smell. When asked, they did kindly relocate us to a 6th floor room with a beautiful balcony and large soak tub and what would have been a fantastic view of the valley if it wasn't foggy. Unfortunately the plumbing didn't work super well on the 6th floor either and I had to constantly unblock the bathrooms. The hotel looks fantastic, but it looks like most of the effort was put to the exterior. The two rooms that I stayed in had electric fireplaces, which, while Sapa isn't THAT cold, is still a nice touch as the place can feel quite damp. Breakfast buffet was decent - good selection of fruits, cheeses, pastries and cooked foods. ![]() Cat Ba, North Vietnam, Vietnam ![]() Added May 12, 2009 There's not tonnes to do on Cat Ba Island itself, and of the things, this is definitely worth seeing. I did a short 1.5 hour hike to the top of one of the tallest hills in the Cat Ba National Park, and the views we had of the surrounds were really fantastic. The hiking path is paved with stones steps for the first part followed by a dirt trail. At the top is a rusty lookout station used by park rangers to spot forest fires, but gives you an even better view of the whole island as you look out to forest and farms juxtaposed in the terrain. Apparently there are other much longer hikes that take you deeper in to the forest as well as all the way to the other side of the island to see remote fishing villages. Those sound pretty fun. ![]() Bac Ha, Vietnam ![]() Added May 12, 2009 When I learned that getting here would take 3 hours, I seriously questioned whether it was worth it. I'm so glad I went in the end as it was quite a sight - endless stalls of colourful tapestries and costumes, new and fragrant herbs, fruits, vegetables, and all manner of meat. I smelled way-powerful 40 proof corn based moonshine served out of giant oil bottles, saw the live water buffalo market where locals peered into the teeth to check health of the Buffalo and spent hours trying to take it all in. I've been told it's gotten more and more touristy in recent years, and the inevitable call to buy by vendors is there at the crafts stands, but what's great is that at least the locals have gotten oblivious to the tourists so you can walk around and just watch as these groups get together to share food, catch up and laugh without feeling TOO much like you're interfering. When bargaining, be sure to at least ask for a 30% discount (probably upwards of 50% if you're good), and don't be afraid to walk away if you don't like the price. Bargaining will be done over a calculator. ![]() Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam ![]() Added May 12, 2009 I'm admittedly not big into performing arts and the idea of a puppet show really didn't appeal to me. But after about 4 people in the space of two days told me to go and check out this performance, I figured I had to go - especially since it was two blocks from my hotel. The theatre seating is very flat so it helps a lot to sit near the front. Buy your tickets in advance to get better seating (plus performances tend to sell out!). I don't want to spoil it too much by describing what you get as the unexpected element was really what I enjoyed the most. Very talented team and very animated looking puppets. :) Worth the 1 hour it takes to enjoy the show. Where it matters, the show is narrated in Vietnamese, English and French. Bring a program guide into the show as it helps things make sense. ![]() Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam ![]() Added May 12, 2009 So before I went to Vietnam, Grace mentioned that there was a restaurant I HAD to try, and to go look it up on GeckoGo. Funny enough, before I had a chance to look up which restaurant she meant, I got a separate recommendation to check out the same place. I was pretty amused upon sitting down to be shown a small laminated card "We serve only 1 dish." Cha Ca La Long serves a traditional grilled fish but they do it well. Service was brisk, food came out less than a minute after we sat down but it was oh-so-good. And I don't even like fish! I really liked the vegetables that came with the grilled fish, and mixing the green onion and dipping sauce with all of it. ![]() Lao Cai, North Vietnam-West, Vietnam ![]() Added May 12, 2009 Was dropped off here while I had a 4 hour layover before my train was to depart. Very soon it was clear to me that this was a pretty popular thing to do as the restaurant quickly filled up with loads of tourists. They serve you cold tea on arrival and they don't give you any pressure to order which is nice. Food was quite reasonably priced ($20,000-$60,000 dong) and quick, but nothing spectacular. Wifi was great - very fast connection. I also found out that they rent places above the restaurant at $100,000 dong for a shower if you feel particularly nasty after a day of sunscreen and dust. It's better rates than the Nha Nghi's around that wanted to charge $200,000 for the same. ![]() Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam ![]() Added May 12, 2009 Given that this restaurant was practically right across from my hotel - plus that it was recommended in several guidebooks, I figured I had to check it out. It's expensive by Vietnamese standards - without wine our bill came to 1,108,000 dong ($62 USD). The food was quite well prepared so it was worth trying out, but if I lived here though it's not the kind of place I would frequent regularly. We ordered the King Prawn and Orange Scallops as mains ($19.90 USD), water and ginger tea ($1.7 and $1.9), a pate appetizer ($7.9), the taster dessert ($5.30 featuring several different mini desserts) and the stuffed buns ($5.6). The buns were the most suprisingly fun item as they were these tiny cream filled buns seasoned with different flavours - coffee, ginger, strawberry and something that tasted like lavender. ![]() Ha Noi, North Vietnam, Vietnam ![]() Added May 12, 2009 Buffalo Tours booked this hotel for us, and it served as my home base for the majority of my stay in Hanoi. It is situated in a pretty convenient location with a market right across the street. Wifi is included, although it can be pretty slow at times. I found I had to change networks several times. They have laundry services at about $0.50 per item which is handy if you are going on a long trip. Another nice touch was the fruit bowl and complimentary water bottles. The breakfast buffet is ok, but not spectacular but it had a decent selection of items. I found the staff to be very friendly and accommodating. The second time we went to the hotel it was all full and they put us on the 4th floor with a window that faces a wall. That wasn't super appealing given that the rest of the rooms in which we stayed had great views of the town, so I went downstairs and asked the manager to switch rooms for us. Happily they obliged. From what I can tell, room rates for a deluxe room were around $60 USD per night, which seems alright for the location. I'd probably stay somewhere else the next time just to try something different. On premise is a massage parlour - it's rates are competitive - $15 for an hour long massage, but I wouldn't recommend the foot polish as they reuse their foot file. ![]() Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong (SAR) ![]() Added May 6, 2009 We found this place on Agoda.com. Was looking for something in Tsim Sha Tsui to get a view of the downtown skyline. Paid about $130 online, and then an extra HKD $200 per night to get a harbour view. I’d saw the harbour view was fantastic and well worth the upgrade price. We got a view of the cruise ship terminal as well as Central and the Peak. The beds were extremely comfortable and the room was spacious and clean. Even though check out is at 12:00 noon, they let us stay a couple hours later and check out at 2:00pm without charge. Internet was a bit pricey at $120 HKD per 24 hours but is to be expected at a nice hotel. Overall I’d say my only real complaint was that the AC was cranked to the max. No matter how much I tried to adjust the dial it was that same slightly frigid temperature. It meant I slept very soundly but was cold enough to have to wear a jacket while walking around normally. ![]() Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong (SAR) ![]() Added May 6, 2009 I remember taking this ferry when I was younger with my grandmother, and it was a great experience to ride the ferry again. This is like a HK institution. The Ferry goes from Tsim Sha Tsui over to Central or vice versa, and the whole ride is pretty quick. You get a great view of the harbour from both ends and sure beats sitting underground in the metro. Highly recommended to try at least once –more so if you’re staying at the Marco Polo hotel as it lets out right outside the hotel :p ![]() Central District, Hong Kong (SAR) ![]() Added May 5, 2009 Ahh, THE Hong Kong experience. Though Hong Kong can be a bit hazy, it’s still worth it to head up to the Peak to get a panoramic view of the city. It’s not the tallest point in HK, but the new multi-story tall observation tower bumps up the viewing height a few more hundred metres. There’s an extra fee of $20HKD to get up to the observation tower beyond the cost of the tram ride, but definitely you get a better view. It’s a totally different experience at night so you may want to factor in two visits – or failing that, I’d more recommend going at night than during the day. If you have plenty of time, allow enough time to go on some of the peak trails that weave around the mountain top. Some of the circuits can take a few hours to complete. ![]() Causeway Bay, Hong Kong (SAR) ![]() Added May 5, 2009 I came here with my cousin as it was one of her favourite restaurants. I’d classify this place as a HK Bistro style restaurant with Japanese and Western influences. The menu items range from about $50HKD to about $90, plus a set menu for $120 which includes a soup, a main plus dessert. Instead of the set menu, we opted for sharing 4 items, splitting the beef enoki mushroom roll, a pasta with foie gras and duck, a pork and pineapple with rice dish plus a Japanese udon stirfry. The food was pretty good, the meat was very tender and the presentation looked nice. I also liked the dessert we got which was a waffle with ice cream and fruit dish as well as an apple crepe. The food wasn’t terribly expensive, coming to about $16 or so a dish, but I didn’t totally love it. The atmosphere was a nice white clean décor though and the place was clearly busy with a lineup by the time we left. ![]() Palo Alto, California, United States ![]() Added Apr 29, 2009 I'm never sure what to expect when it's a fusion restaurant. On one hand I think that there are going to be an interesting combination of flavours. On the other hand, fusion in my mind always = pricey. And this place is definitely on the pricey side. If not for that though, the food was absolutely delicious. I had hamachi shots with my friend (we went here for his birthday) for appetizers that were unique and tasty, and their five spice lamb was very very good. But a meal for four can run $200+ before wine, and for that price it really needs to be better than good. Mind you, all this said, it's still one of my roommate's absolute favourite restaurants. :) ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Apr 10, 2009 I LOVE gelato so I'm going to jump at every chance to get some. I had recently discovered Gelato Classico in Mountain View and was happily getting my regular fix of honey lavender ice cream. But here I was following a group of Women 2.0 volunteers and we were at a new gelato place. So of course I had to try some. I'd have to say though I love my regular gelato place that their salt water caramel and their meyer lemon gelato is pretty darn good! ![]() Mountain View, California, United States ![]() Added Apr 10, 2009 This is my new favourite place to go when I don't feel like cooking dinner. I had walked past it for months but never went in. Then one day I didn't feel like cooking for dinner and they happened to be open - open till midnight! Well then, this was the signal to check 'em out. Off went my roommates and I. We came at around 8:30pm and were happy to note they serve dim sum at night! In fact from 9:00pm on, they have a special menu for a lower price - 3 dim sum items for $10, braised pot dishes for around $9-$10. The food tasted like it was freshly steamed and good. Yum. :) Custard buns on the menu. Double yum. :) I'd say their regular prices are a bit pricey but the late night dinner is great. And even at regular prices, their seafood eggplant braised pot is among the best I've tried. ![]() San Rafael Arriba, San Jose & Surrounding Region, Costa Rica ![]() Added Mar 27, 2009 This was my second Costa Rican meal ever. For a place that overlooked the city, I was expecting outrageous prices, but you get a great view, pretty good food at prices that seemed inline with everywhere else I ate. I got the traditional plate with chicarrones as my meat, a local specialty of pork that I believe has been cooked in oil. My dish included salad, rice, beans and came to 3800 colones. Great friendly staff too! The whole restaurant is open air (seems to be quite common in Costa Rica), given the location the place can be cold (I ended up keeping my jacket on the whole meal, and also asked for a lot of hot water in my non-existent spanish.) Only pain in the butt thing is that it's far to get to and the food is about as good as what I can get much closer to the city of San Jose. But worth it to go at least once for the view. ![]() Los Angeles, California, United States ![]() Added Feb 26, 2009 I know I was in LA to check out a travel show, but I was stoked the minute I heard we had reservations to "some place that usually takes months to get a reservation" and spent most of my time looking forward to it. I'm not normally a big fan of eating out for Italian because I make Italian food enough at home but the food here was GOOD. We ordered 3 appetizers + 3 pizzas for the 4 people and polished it off within minutes of arrival. I highly recommend the sage with truffle oil and four cheeses pizza, the fried squash blossoms, the white bean bruschetta with saba and the caprese salad. The staff was also really friendly and accommodating - two of us wanted cold water, two wanted warm, two of us wanted lemon...all delivered with a sense of humour. Great place, good value, and worth a stop if you can get reservations! ![]() Culver City, California, United States ![]() Added Feb 26, 2009 This was the first place we went the moment we were off the plane and out of the LAX airport. Grace raved about it the whole way so I was totally excited to try it. Tito's Tacos is -crowded-. They take orders at a takeout window both outside and inside the restaurant both have pretty long lineups, but it moves at a decent pace and I was surprised how quickly we were able to find seating after paying. Tito's Tacos has a pretty simple menu, but that's ok because you're really just there for their tacos. There's only one flavour, and at first it reminded me of those El de Paso taco hard taco shells you buy in stores - but so. much. better. On Grace's recommendation I ordered 2 tacos, but was pretty full after the first one. They give you free chips and a large container of salsa that was really yummy. I tried some of the other items including a chicken tamale and an enchilada that were so so. Tacos are really where it's at. :) ![]() Mountain View, California, United States ![]() Added Feb 4, 2009 Since I moved down to Mountain View, I've been looking for good Thai food, but alas, despite all the Thai restaurants on Castro street, I didn't find what I was looking for. I'm checking out Yelp and I see this Thai restaurant that's practically right down the block. So what's a self professed Thai-food lover to do? I go! The place seems to be family run, and the prices were quite reasonable. What was really great though was that the food actually tastes really good! I ordered their papaya salad, and the eggplant basil. So happy to have found this place. Update: downgraded from 5 stars to 4 because their food has been very salty each of the times I wet to visit it recently. ![]() Mountain View, California, United States ![]() Added Jan 9, 2009 I'm a big fan of gelato and am willing to make special destination treks out specifically for the acquisition for some fine gelato. Who would have thought one of the better places was right under my nose? This place is really no frills, but saving all the effort for the taste. The dark chocolate is the best, and I have a fondness too for their honey lavender flavour. In the summers the lineups are out the door. ![]() Lofthus, West Norway, Norway ![]() Added Dec 24, 2008 I was lucky enough to come here with a group of tour operators and some journalists, so we were able to see parts of the hotel that are normally not open to the public. And what a beautiful and stately hotel! The beds were comfortable, the food at both breakfast and dinner (both buffets) were absolutely fantastic, the owner was incredibly friendly and charming, coming out to personally greet us at the beginning and to bid us farewell. This place, while not new definitely had a lot of character. Christer O. commented... Added Feb 25, 2009 Cool, even if i live in Sweden I have never been further than Oslo and Arendal, but it seems like a good idea to explore Norway some more. ![]() Mountain View, California, United States ![]() Added Dec 22, 2008 I've been meaning to go to this place forever due to a recommendation from a friend. She claimed that this was the "best place for crab in the Bay Area.". Well I love crab so that's a pretty convincing argument. :p Six months later, I finally had a chance to go because of a friend's farewell. About 10 of us went, and with that many of us, the set menu seemed a logical option. And what good value it was! For around $10 a person we had 1 whole peking duck, 2 whole crabs, 1 whole chicken - something like 8-9 dishes in total, including some that we had to pack! I loved it so much I went back for seconds the next day, but the 4 person menu is not as tasty. At that point, it's better just to order a la carte. The place isn't easy to find - being hosted alongside an Inn, but worth the effort to hunt it down. Great food, good value, even if a little bit greasy. ![]() Palo Alto, California, United States ![]() Added Dec 3, 2008 I had high hopes for this place as I really wanted to find a good Caribbean restaurant. I came on a Sunday morning and there were a few diners sitting out in the patio area, so I had to go inside, which is much darker. The server seemed a bit tired when she greeted us. The menu seemed pretty good, lots of options between wraps, rotis, sandwiches and chicken and shrimp dishes, as well as a large selection of smoothies. And the portions were huge! One soup was enough to feed all four of us, and the sandwich filled the whole entire plate. If only the food was good. I found things to be bland and rather tasteless. And I lucked out because I got a salad and it was the freshest looking. The others who went with me had even more disappointing food. <sigh> At least it was all relatively cheap. ![]() Bergen, West Norway, Norway ![]() Added Nov 19, 2008 I came here on a cold, totally wet day, but still worth it. Normally I'm used to cable car or tram rides, but something mounted on the side of a hill as steep as this was...that was cool. Plus the view from the top when everything did clear up was fantastic! ![]() Bergen, West Norway, Norway ![]() Added Nov 19, 2008 Went here on our last day of a conference to celebrate a week of adventurous boat cruising. It was a rainy wet day, but the weather cleared up towards the night and we had a clear view looking out of the city from within the restaurant. We were greeted with a trio of appetizers "a taste of norway" comprising scallops, crab, and another dish that was absolutely tasty. Then we were served a 3 course meal with an absolute insane amount of food. I'm not sure how the food is usually served as we were several hundred in the room, but they brought out large platters of food and served each person from that platter. Which is nice because you could customize a bit what you want. The dessert platter came out with a number of pastries and lefse. Mmm, good, but I was so stuffed by then already. :) ![]() Palo Alto, California, United States ![]() Added Nov 17, 2008 I tried Burmese for the first time (Mingalaba) in Burlingame and absolutely looooved it. So given that I hate driving, I tried to find a closer location. A quick search online and I found the Green Elephant Gourmet, and moments later, my roommates were dragged out of the house and to the restaurant. We arrived quite late in the evening and they had lots of seats open. We were seated immediately, and I tried to order the tea leaf salad, one of their fish soups and a noodle salad. The tea leaf salad was good, but quite salty, whereas the noodle salad was quite bland. The fish soup turned out quite tasty, but it was not what I expected. Rather than a chunky hearty stew, the texture was almost pureed. It was good, but a bit weird. Prices were not bad, and the service was friendly. But would I go back? I'm not sure. I guess I just like Mingalaba that much more. ![]() Los Gatos, California, United States ![]() Added Nov 16, 2008 Walking around Los Gatos looking for a place to have our team meeting, we decided to come to stop here. From the outside you wouldn't expect much, but the inside was extremely spacious. Based on Indra's recommendation, we ordered the pesto pizza, piquillo peppers and the heirloom tomato salad. Since it was a meeting ;), we sadly didn't try any beer, but will have to make a point to come back and do so sometime. :) Food was quite good. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Nov 16, 2008 I came here after my roommates went hunting for timbuk2 bags and parked in front of this place. The open space cafe/restaurant specializes in Belgian fries that come in a cone with your choice of 20 dips. I opted for the large fries $4.75 to get 2 dips and got pesto mayonnaise and the chipotle remoulade, both of which were pretty good. I also got their bosch salad $9.75 - a spring mix with quinoa, veggie salami, green onion, tomato, avocado and mango with a tangerine balsamic vinegrette. I knew I was ordering too much food right from the start, but really wanted to try both. The salad was nice and hearty (definitely a full meal on its own), and I actually ended up making two meals out of it by packing half my salad. I'd probably come back. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Nov 15, 2008 I came here because I was craving dessert. We walked in at about 9:00 at night and the place was packed. We waited about 10 minutes before we were able to get a seat. The cakes on the surface looked good - hedgehog cake, white chocolate raspberry cake. Given the prices, we decided to get a cake to go instead of sitting down. And the cake was dry, bland, and disappointing. Especially at $28 for a 6"! I did also order a smoothie though, and was pleased to see a large quantity of fruits used to make a smoothie. That was one saving grace or I would have given a lower rating. That, and the staff was really friendly - they split our cake into two to take home at no extra charge. Would I go back? With so many other places to choose, I'd say I doubt it. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Nov 15, 2008 Came here one evening on a walk down the street, and decided to stop inside. The staff was extremely friendly, offering us a free taste of their rich chocolate drink (which certainly was incredibly rich!). A number of desserts including chocolate chip cookie, chocolate fondue and other spanish pastries were on display. I tried the chocolate chai, which while tiny (for $4.99) was quite delicious. They offer free wifi, which is nice.
![]() Richmond, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Nov 15, 2008 Came here recently with my sister and ordered their lassi. The price was great - $2, but the flavour was so-so. Also got some take out food on another occasion. For the price $6.99 for 3 items, the price is not bad, but I have had better in other food court restaurants. I find it's worth it to pay a little more and go to a proper sit down restaurant with a full fledged lunch buffet. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Nov 10, 2008 I had wanted Ethiopian, ever since trying an absolutely delicious place in Toronto and was on scout for something good in Vancouver. Looking at the various reviews online, this seemed to be our best bet. We walked in and were greeted by Fassil, who was extremely friendly. He asked if it was our first time, and since it was for several people at the table, suggested some dishes (for 6 people, we did 2 vegetarian combos, 1 lamb, 1 beef and 1 chicken.) I really liked Fassil's personality - very friendly and approachable. And food wise? I liked most of the vegetable dishes, but the chickpea one wasn't my favourite. Both the beef and lamb dishes were good. I'm not sure if it's just style of cuisine, but several people at the table didn't like it that much, so there was food left on the table. Still I'm glad I went, and while the food for me this time was closer to 3.5 stars, the personality bumps it to 4. Zbigniew M. commented... Added Nov 10, 2008 You very good for make information. Tzequi! ![]() Rosendal, West Norway, Norway ![]() Added Nov 5, 2008 I know this was one of the top attractions in the Kvinnherad area. The Barony itself was interesting to see - especially given its distinction as the smallest castle in Scandinavia. The scenery around it with waterfalls streaming down as a backdrop behind dramatic mountains was totally spectacular. But I was a bit disappointed to see what I consider a historical place being used for private functions. knowing that marred my impressions a little, but it's still a beautiful surrounding to walk around, and worth a visit if you're in the area. ![]() Oslo, East Norway, Norway ![]() Added Nov 5, 2008 My first feeling was relief when I found out this place was available. I was told by numerous people that "something was going on" in Olso the weekend I was to arrive, and that nothing would be there. So I had a pretty much "I'll take what I can get" attitude with this place. It was 3 stars, ok price, supposedly 2 blocks from the train station. For what I was expecting, the place was ok. It had one of those showers that share a floor with the entire bathroom, which always makes me chuckle, but internet was free, breakfast was included, I slept fine, so I'm not going to complain. That said, the place is NOT 2 blocks from the train station the way the little map implies It's closer to 5 blocks, and the elevator broke down while I was there so I was carrying breakfast up 12 flights of stairs to my sick friend. I'm happy to have had a roof over my head for as last minute that I booked it so no complaints. :) ![]() Tromso, Far North Norway, Norway ![]() Added Nov 3, 2008 For something like 96 NOK, I got a nice sized pita wrap with lamb (cheaper than chicken) with heaps of vegetables including canned corn (that I had never had in a wrap before). Was pretty good. ![]() Tromso, Far North Norway, Norway ![]() Added Nov 3, 2008 Tromso was the farthest north I've ever been in my life, but I've always had a fascination of the arctic region, so it was cool to see the video on Svalbard, as well as to look at the various exhibits. ![]() Tromso, Far North Norway, Norway ![]() Added Nov 3, 2008 One of the most striking buildings in Norway, the Arctic Cathedral is not technically a cathedral. Worth a visit, especially on your way to the Cable Car ride or on the way back. ![]() Tromso, Far North Norway, Norway ![]() Added Nov 3, 2008 I spent a few days scooting aroudn Tromso before having the chance to take the cable car ride up. The view from the top is absolutely spectacular. It can get cold and windy up there (especially in October when I went), but there is a restaurant up there so you can get yourself a nice cup of hot chocolate and wander. Numerous paths at the top take you to various viewpoints of the city, of the mountains behind and further. We were there as part of a tour so I didn't get as much of a chance to explore as I'd like, but well worth the visit if you are in town. ![]() Tromso, Far North Norway, Norway ![]() Added Oct 21, 2008 I wouldn't have normally picked a Clarion to stay at, but it was one of the options for a conference I was attending and my first pick was already booked, so Clarion it was. The Clarion hotel seems to have been renovated recently - the decor looked clean and modern. The registration desk was really helpful, giving us one of the larger rooms so we could more comfortably fit 3 beds for us budget travellers. On the rooftop are a sauna and rooftop jaccuzzi which I sadly didn't take advantage of. GREAT view of the harbour though. What REALLY impressed me was how much they went out of the way to help. My friend arrived to Tromso totally sick. Lill from the front desk not only called the hospital on my behalf, she spoke with them, called a taxi, wrote the directions, and even let us stay past our normal checkout when my friend was too ill to travel. The breakfast too was also really impressive - I'm a picky breakfast eater, but they had a great selection of hot and cold foods, including veggies, omelets, bacon, fruit, cheese, smoked salmon and more. Mmm. So good. My second stay there was a little less spectacular as we were moved into a room where our door didn't work. Because of how friendly and helpful the staff were for the first stay, I'd still say the hotel is highly recommended. ![]() Amsterdam, Amsterdam & Noord Holland, Netherlands ![]() Added Oct 18, 2008 I had been told by everyone that the lineups here were legendary so I wasn't expecting to walk the building with no one outside. Since there wasn't a lineup, it felt rather silly of me not to go. So in I went. Admission fee was something like 11 euros and once inside, I quickly got into the procession of visitors. Anne Frank's house is toured in a structured sequence as you move from room to room listening to audio narrations, looking at artifacts and actually walking through the rooms that Anne and her family lived through. Walking through the tour, hearing the creaking of the floorboards from the traffic made me wonder what it must have been like living there in confinement, knowing that you life depending on being quiet. I was also struck by how steep the staircases were. You see interviews with the helpers with Anne's father Otto as well as actual excerpts of her writing. I had read the book as a child, but seeing the place is something else. Even with the crowds its worth a visit. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Oct 18, 2008 A friend really really likes this place so we took him there for his birthday. We tried to go once before but ended up arriving on the day they were doing a private company function. Doh! This time we got in fine and got one of their round tables in the back. The menu is a 3 page tall-narrow brochure style spread, with the last page changes for items of the day. We got the tuna negitoro which is served on garlic toast. The tuna was so fatty it almost had a buttery fois gras taste. Was really good - good enough for the table to order 3. Other highlights included the pumpkin puree and the shrimp tempura. I love ceviche so I ordered that but it was so-so compared to some Peruvian restaurants I'd visited. I found the place a little bit cold, and had to put on my jacket. My mini pet-peeve are restaurants that only have cold water in their bathroom and this was one of those. I had just arrived to the restaurant after a full day of plane-and-bus transit so it was quite the shock to wash my face in the basin with coooold water. But then hey, how many people are going to do that in a restaurant? :p Bottom line - tasty food. Decent price for tapas given that tapas is usually more. Dishes are around $7.95-$11.95 per dish and each person would order about 2-4 dishes depending on how starving you are. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Oct 18, 2008 Finally came here after hearing friends rave about it a bunch. I only tried two things - the beef stew and the subs and both were pretty darn good. The beef stew comes with your choice of bread or rice, and you get a nice giant helping of both. The sandwiches I thought could have done with a few more toppings (e.g., more pickled radishes and carrots), but for the price and for what WAS on the bread - pretty good. :) I'd go back. ![]() Palo Alto, California, United States ![]() Added Oct 3, 2008 This place is my roommate's absolute favourite Italian restaurant, so we go there from time to time. It didn't blow my mind the first time as I am used to Italian restaurants with 400 different pasta options, but it's grown on me over time. :) I particularly like their beef carpaccio appetizer and their papparadelle pastas. ![]() Banff, Alberta, Canada ![]() Added Sep 29, 2008 I absolutely love the Rockies, and Banff is one of my favourite parks within. The scenery is breathtaking - the lakes a vibrant turquoise. Watch for wildlife along the roads or up in the rocks. Always an amusing sight. :) ![]() Arusha, Northeastern Tanzania, Tanzania ![]() Added Sep 29, 2008 The Ngorongoro crater is pretty incredible in many ways. Just descending down the dirt path from the crater's edge for one. The old elephants with their incredibly long tusks for another. The occasional rhino if you're super lucky. The thing is, I think it's best if you see the Norongoro Crater first before the Serengeti. It's really a compact taste. I went to the Serengeti first before the crater, and while I was impressed with what I did see, it just couldn't compare in sheer grandeur, variety of wildlife, and sense of being out in the wilderness. So I guess I was a bit let down. That said though, it's like nothing I've ever seen before, so definitely worth a visit. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 28, 2008 Ok so at first thought I thought the bridge would be overrated. I mean, c'mon, it's a bridge. There are lots of bridges out there. But the thing is, certain things really define a city landscape...and San Francisco just wouldn't be San Francisco without one. Plus it makes for great pictures. 5 stars from me it is! Btw, what I've been told is really fun is to rent bikes and cycle across the bridge and take a ferry back. I haven't tried that yet but will be sure to do so! ![]() Quebec, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Sep 8, 2008 Stayed here during a company national meeting. What a beautiful hotel. It was one of the most striking hotels in my memory both for the zen look, and for the crazy bathroom. I know girls are generally liberal and all, but the room my coworker and I shared had a glass wall separating the bathroom from the bedroom. So much for privacy. :p That said though, I really liked my stay. Beds were comfy, breakfast option was fantastic. ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Sep 8, 2008 Used to go here with friends often. Usually good music - top 40 type stuff - had live DJs on the weekend of course. Drinks were good. Can get busy, but there are multiple floors including an open terrace in the summertime. ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Sep 8, 2008 I'm not normally a big fan of Philly Cheesesteaks. My first choice that night was the House of Nanking. One look at the lineup and we decided we needed to look at alternatives. One of my friends suggested to try this place, and given we were supposed to be somewhere by 10:00pm, Busters it was. At first look, the menu seemed quite different than a typical cheesesteak. For one thing, I was looking forward to toppings like zucchini and swiss cheese. I split a Californian with a friend (and it was more than enough to fill us both), and it was the most delicious philly cheeseteak I'd ever had. The meat was tender, the sauce was delicious, the toppings creative. I'm hungry just thinking about it. I'd definitely go back. :) ![]() Stone Town, Zanzibar & Pemba, Tanzania ![]() Added Aug 29, 2008 I loved stone town! Had a really great time walking through all of the old streets. I'd recommend this place for pretty much anyone. :) ![]() Palo Alto, California, United States ![]() Added Aug 28, 2008 Found this place when I used to live in Mountain View. It's nice in that the food seems a lot healthier than many fast food options. I absolutely LOVE the vegetarian combo platter - it's great value, and the two eggplant salads on the combo are really tasty (fully combo: dolmades, hummous, eggplant salad, greek salad and falafel). Another good option is the meat combo and adana platter. Decent price value ration. Veggie combo is around $6.95 an the meat platters around $10.95. ![]() Saint-Simeon, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Aug 6, 2008 First went here with a gang of friends May 2005. Went back again in August and stayed at the same place because we enjoyed it so much. I loved going as a gang as it's in a good central location both for heading up to Tadoussac or down to La Malbaie. If you go in the off season, you can negotiate a good rate. I loved sitting on the chairs looking out to the river in the evenings when we were winding down from a day out exploring. Between the couches, cribs and rooms, we were able to fit in a group of 8 and it was still fine (except fighting for the bathrooms :) ![]() Mountain View, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 29, 2008 I went here for the company. Was meeting a group of friends who I hadn't seen in a while. That is the only good thing I can say about the restaurant. The food was disappointing. Very oil, a bit soggy. Not the kind of thing I'd ever crave. The steamed fish at the very end was pretty good though and the prices were alright. ![]() Richmond, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jul 29, 2008 I went here with a friend just before I was about to hop onto the plane (it's pretty close to the airport). Food was quick. Nothing spectacular, but pretty good considering their very cheap prices. I was told their food is considered more Hong Kong diner style. Had everything from Wonton Soup to Hainan Chicken to French Toast. ![]() Paris, Ile-de-France, France ![]() Added Jul 27, 2008 This was the first Notre-Dame of all the Notre-Dames that I ever visited, and there was just something incredible about going into the cathedral, heading up to the belltower and feeling underneath my feet the groove of each well-worn step developed over time from all the countless footsteps before me following the same path. I love this place. :) ![]() San Jose, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 27, 2008 My roommate brought me a cake for my birthday from this place. It was one of those princess cakes with marizpan, whipped cream, custard and raspberry jam. OMG this cake was so good. It wasn't too sweet at the custard was awesome. Was the best cake of its kind that I had. A bit price though $22.95 for a "6 inc cake. ![]() Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jul 23, 2008 I went here on an elementary school field trip and it was fun. The place is set in the 1920s where they show you what life was like then. There are volunteers and staff members dressed in historical outfits, and they demonstrate tasks like churning butter. I remember the freshly churned butter tasting pretty good :) ![]() Seattle, Washington, United States ![]() Added Jul 15, 2008 I went here for my friend's surprise birthday party. I was craving seafood so this sounded like it'd be fun. Their "twist" on the dining experience is that they don't serve you your food on plates. If you order from their "Seafood for two or more" menu, they bring your food in giant metal bowls and just dump it onto the table. So that's what I did. I ordered the "Westport", which has clams, mussels, crab, shrimp, corn on the cob, potatoes and slices of sausage. The portions were ridiculous - $24.95 for portions the size of my head. The seafood itself was decent - they salt it and sprinkle it with cajun seasoning but not much else. I'd say the only problems I had with my meal were that the prawns were a bit overcooked and that the food got cold really fast. Eat quickly! :) Worth trying at least once. ![]() San Juan, Puerto Rico ![]() Added Jul 10, 2008 Sadly I came by here as part of a cruise. But I loved walking around the town and seeing colourful historical colonial buildings. The streets still have cobblestone. Just head away from the cruise port as quickly as possible and then you're good. :) ![]() La Malbaie, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Jul 10, 2008 A gourmand friend told us about this place. As we were in the area on our way to Charlevoix we stopped by. It was a lovely place for dinner. This place is owned by a husband and wife team, and each of them control half of the menu. Dinner if I remember was fixed and you chose 3 courses from either side of the menu. The items were creative, very delicious, and made for a great atmosphere. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jul 10, 2008 This small, very cosy, unassuming restaurant packs in some pretty good food. I didn't get a chance to order off the menu so I don't know what it's normally like as I went there as part of a wedding. The food was delicious - far more tender and flavourful than I ever expected from first glance (not to say the presentation wasn't nice, but when it's buffet style you're not ever sure :p) The appetizer platter was varied, original and tasty. I can't really say what the food was. There was lamb with orzo, chicken with green beans, smoked salmon and shrimp cocktail and all sorts of other stuff. I guess it's west coast food? ![]() Sunnyvale, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 10, 2008 I've been seeing this place for ages and have wanted to go and check out the restaurant. Finally like 3 years later I got my chance when I was able to convince someone else to go with me. I had never had Afghan food before and I was expecting something ... exotic :p The food ended up tasting very familiar, and it was all very good. We ordered a bunch of different plates and split it all family style. ![]() San Mateo, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 10, 2008 I first heard about this place rock climbing with a friend. We were starving, we needed some place close, and more importantly, we needed some place open. This was. We got there near closing time, and lucked out too because the lineups are normally legendary. Their ramen is incredible. I especially like the pork broth flavour. Your other choices are soya sauce and miso. To it, you can add toppings (which all cost you more). My only complaint really is the cost. Your basic bowl doesn't come with a lot, so if you want stuff it starts piling up. Basic bowl is $7.95, if you want to add 2 pieces of stewed pork it becomes $4.95 extra, beansprouts are $0.50, seaweed is $1, curry flavour is an extra $1 or so - before you know it you've got like a $15 bowl of noodles versus $1 if you buy from the grocery store! Yah I know. Doesn't compare. :) Worth going every craving. :) ![]() North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jul 10, 2008 This thing is a total slog up the mountain, but fun to see how fit you are! It's a relentless trail of switchbacks all the way up the hill, but whatever celebratory meal you have after is worth the effort! The record is a bit under 30 minutes, though most people will take about 1 to 1.5 hours. ![]() Ottawa, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Jul 9, 2008 I didn't really know what a lock was until I saw these one fine summer in Ottawa. For those clueless like me, locks help raise or lower boats to different water levels via chambers that can raise or lower their water levels. Anyway, I didn't see any boats on it that day but it was cool to look at it :) ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jul 9, 2008 The BEST place to go if you're sick. And a pretty darn good place if you're not either way :) I love their congee - I think it's some of the best in Vancouver. They've also got great snack dishes and of course noodles too :) Very reasonable prices. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jul 9, 2008 This used to be one of my absolute favourite ice cream stores for the sheer volume of flavours - 218 flavours at current count with stuff like curry, ginger and rice among the mix. The store is the brainchild of an italian and chinese couple, so you will see inspiration from both. I still like the selection of ice cream flavours, but found the quality to have dropped slightly as of late. ![]() Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jul 9, 2008 I first went here - woah - 20 years ago (this thing is an institution). Nothing has changed in all this time. You still get options of fish and chips battered up nicely. If you get it to go it's still wrapped up in newspaper. I'm not a big fan of fried fish usually but I do like their halibut here. I also LOVE their seafood chowder. Not sure if it's a regular hangout, but definitely for the occasional craving. ![]() Beijing, Beijing Province, China ![]() Added Jul 3, 2008 Went here in 2002 as part of a group tour. Man if I have anything to say about organized group tours to these types of places - it's don't. But I digress. The Great Wall is certainly impressive, but there was something that felt a bit like a let down to go to the wall and to see it, well, so well preserved. That's because they've put in a lot of restoration work to this section, with the end effect of making the whole thing look new. I've since found out that other areas of the Great Wall - such as the Simatai Section for instance - to be far better to visit for both authenticity and experience. That all said it was impressive to walk along the walls, imagine the work it must have been for the labourers to actually build it, and to scale the giant and uneven steps up the slope. Worth a visit if you don't have time to go to any of the other sections. ![]() Burlingame, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 1, 2008 I discovered this place quite by accident one afternoon when meeting friends for lunch. We were on our way to Stacks when the "Okra lunch special" advertised on the street sign for Mingalaba caught my eye. I had never had Burmese before so I really wanted to try it. Turns out it was a super idea. It was a weekend the first time I went so I ordered everything a la carte (usually if you go during weekdays they have a lunch menu with salad+main as a combo.) My friends and I split 3 plates - house special noodles, mango salad, and the 16 ingredient salad. The mango salad was delicious, as was the 16 ingredient salad. The house salad was something different. It comes as its own ritual. First they bring out the plate with all the ingredients separated into little piles. Then they explain to you each ingredient (noodles, lime leaves, fried garlic, lemon halves, chicken or tofu, cilantro, peanuts, etc.) before they take two lemon halves, squeeze them on top of the dish and start tossing. It was as mesmerizing for me to watch the procedure as it was to eat the aftermath. I'm such a sucker for this kind of stuff :) Definitely worth a visit! ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 1, 2008 This place is owned by a friend of a friend of a friend's. My friend's friend decided to organize a grand get-together to celebrate the launch and I happily got an invite. I'm not one to turn down food invitations - especially for a cuisine that I had not yet tried. So I went. :) Metro Kathmandu is a smallish little restaurant. Since the gang knew the owners, they left the food selection up to the owners. Out came dishes that I didn't know the names, but all of it was good. The samosas came with a lovely tangy tamarind dish, and what looked like a Palak Paneer (spinach dish) was delicious as was the lamb curry dish that got polished off quickly. Even the dessert, which looked not-Nepalese-nor-Indian-at-all (fancy ice cream) was quite tasty. ![]() West Hollywood, California, United States ![]() Added Jul 1, 2008 I was down in LA to visit a friend who was there for a conference. Since he's from Canada, we wanted to pick a type of food that he couldn't find at home. IMO, the Mexican food in Canada just does. not. exist. compared to any Mexican place in California. So after some research, this place came up. Cool thing about this place (or stressful depending on how you look at it), is that there is no written menu. The owner, Frank Romero, will actually come up to your table and recount the options. You can cheat and look at the menu on the web site if you want first. ;) Frank is very entertaining in his descriptions. I went for some creamy shrimp dish with cilantro that was quite good. The gang went for chicken I think. The thing is that when you order dishes here you don't just get the dish. It ends up being this multi-course meal deal starting with a bowl of pickled vegetables. You also get the requisite chips & salsa. Next came soup, a mini taco/ appetizer style burrito. Only after that comes your main, followed by a dessert. If you know the owner well enough, I saw multiple tables being served some sort of aperitif - but I wasn't in that category :p Food came out a bit pricey (compared to my normal Mexican dining experience) - I think it was about $25 a person, but it was a fun experience. Worth going at least once, and judging by the crowds & wait time - other people must think so too. :) ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Jun 30, 2008 I first came here in 2007 with two dear friends, both of whom played a big part in getting this site underway actually. :) As a "thank you", I thought I'd take them out for dinner this place was suggested. Turned out to be a Japanese sushi restaurant. Now I'm from Vancouver so I happen to be quite the sushi snob so I had my doubts. Well, this place blew me away. The price was only slightly more than what I'd pay in Vancouver (around $25 for all you can eat at night), the food was fresh and the presentation was incredible. A lot of effort on garnishes that were almost too pretty to break apart and eat. They put in more artistic flair than any other all-you-can-eat place I've been to and the quality was up there to match. In fact, I liked it so much I came back here twice more. :) If you're craving sushi and you don't live in Vancouver, this is the place to go. Why, oh why, did I have to discover it only after I moved away from Montreal? Sadly here in Mountain View California, there ain't nothing like it :( ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Jun 28, 2008 I discovered this place quite by accident. I had a meeting, I wanted to sit down for said meeting, I looked across the street there were our options: 1) burger joint and the 2) french pastry shop. I had actually wanted to pick the burger joint because it had free wifi, but I was lured in by the promise of macaroons to this place. I LOVE French Macaroons, so tell me they are there, and I'm here. I thought we were onto something when I saw a Lonely Planet sticker on the door and was in an even better mood when I saw a bowl of samples sitting on the countertop. Without thinking about what I might be sampling, I picked up a piece and put it in my mouth. Mmm. Goodness it was good. I was sold. I was supposed to be having lunch, not dessert, so I went over to the display case with the lunch-like food. Lots of fresh salad options, some quiche, sandwiches and panini. I opted for the chicken penne salad and the beet salad, both of which were good. The person who gave me my plat originally gave me very little, but thankfully the nice guy at the cashier took a look at it, at me, decided it wasn't nearly enough food, and topped of my plate more. Lunch was good, but in my mind the macaroons were where the real decision was going to be at. They had all sorts of flavours to choose from - passion fruit, cassis, pistachio, rose, hazelnut...I couldn't decide so I got them all. YUMMY. Expensive though - $1.5 per macaroon. Since they passed the macaroon test - Ill have to come back - unless of course I figure out how to make macaroons on my own first. :) ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Jun 28, 2008 Went here last night since a friend hadn't been and wanted to check it out. We got there thinking we'd better hurry or we'd be late. Walked in at around 10:00pm - had to pay a $10 cover first :( - into a completely empty room. I think there were two other people there when we arrived and they looked at us with a look of desperation. I think it was another 40 minutes before the place filled up, though by the time we left it was completely packed. The DJ who was playing was pretty decent though he wasn't very responsive to our requests. We asked him twice, he said he was going to play something - and that something never got played during the 3 hours we were there. Drinks were good, $10 for a martini, $9 for shots of tequila. Gotta fight for attention at the bar though. The crowd seemed pretty young - a bit younger than than at Harlot. Then again, I haven't been to too many places in the Bay Area so maybe I'm no good judge. :p ![]() San Francisco, California, United States ![]() Added Jun 28, 2008 This place is hit and miss. I went there twice - had an absolute blast the first time and just couldn't wait to leave the second. The DJ was what made all the difference. The first time they played an awesome blend of really good dance beats - the second time ...not so much. The place is small - dance floor even smaller, but it's done in a way you don't feel claustrophobic. The decor is dark, but didn't necessarily make me feel like I was in a brothel or anything. One thing I'd say is that the male:female ratio is highly skewed towards girls. It was probably 4 girls to 1 guy? Felt like working at my old company L'Oreal again! :p I always went before 10:00pm and noticed that the place started to fill up around 11:30. Both times I didn't have to pay cover. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jun 24, 2008 Tried this on a whim last minute while walking around the area. It was late at night and that was one of the few places open. The food was decent but overall not too memorable. Prices were decent and the service was very attentive. I think it's a family business. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jun 24, 2008 A good friend introduced me to this place after I was missing all the great lebanese restaurants in Montreal. This small, unpretentious place has limited seating so a lot of the food is takeout. The meat is juicy and well seasoned and the platters are delicious. Well worth going - especially with the price. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jun 18, 2008 Went here just this past weekend since there is also a Banana Leaf in Milpitas, California (unrelated) and I was curious how this Banana Leaf fared. It was lunchtime, so though I was tempted to try the tasting menu which looked like a good value, but I didn't think I had quite the appetite for it. The bunch of us split an appetizer plate and two mains. The appetizer platter came with a mango salad, roti prata, chicken satay skewers and calamari. The mango salad was different than what I was expecting with actual chunks of mango on top of a bed of lettuce instead of shredded mango, but the dressing was delicious. The seafood noodle dish was also really good. Our third dish was a beef curry, but I was so full by that point I was barely able to try it. Was pretty good overall and very nice portion sizes. :) ![]() Sicamous, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jun 13, 2008 Now as a caveat - I didn't actually PAY to get in. I thought the $9 was pretty steep, but the waterfalls and rapids were very striking (You can see it from the road as you cross the bridge). So I parked in the visitor's parking area and then walked over to the public bridge where you can get a pretty decent view of the whole thing. Good enough for me. :p ![]() Quilchena, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jun 10, 2008 Passed by this lake on a road trip. While it's not one of the most breathtaking lakes in the world that I've seen, it's certainly beautiful and the scenery around it quite dramatic. It was windy the day I passed by so there were actually large waves crashing against the lake shores. Pretty and a worthwhile stop. ![]() Napa, California, United States ![]() Added Jun 9, 2008 Went here with a bunch of friends last year. As usual with many of the wineries in the Napa/Sonoma area the grounds were beautiful. Beringer has two tasting rooms - a reserve and a regular. Word of advice - if you even think you might be purchasing a membership / fixed wine delivery, don't buy any wines first. You get a discount, but not retroactively. Had fun strolling around the premise. If you have time take the wine tour as well. It was informative and made the winery seem a bit more personable. ![]() Sonoma, California, United States ![]() Added Jun 8, 2008 Went here with a bunch of friends this year. The grounds are beautiful and I discovered my new favourite wine here in the reserves section - gotta try the Malbec! ![]() Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Jun 5, 2008 I first came to Niagara Falls during the summer, and then recently again in the heart of the bloody cold Ontario winter. I was shivering in my big fluffy coat the whole time, hot chocolate in hand notwithstanding, but it was soo worth it. I didn't expect to see the waters below the falls almost completely frozen at the surface and was amazed at the sight of massive tumbling sheets of water plummeting into the frozen basin of water. If you go in the summer, you HAVE to get on the Maid in the Mist - a boat ride that takes you close to the bottom of the falls. The views from the boat are unbelievable -- there's just something magical about seeing the strong currents coming right down your way and hearing the crushing thunderous roar, well, also right in your face. Niagara falls changes as the seasons shift and with each change , a different personality. If can only go once though, apparently the locals say sunrise in February is where it's at. ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Jun 5, 2008 I love animals and plants and all, but didn't think I would be that excited about going to the Biodome. But a friend was in town, and as host I thought I ought to go. Well I ended up being pleasantly surprised. The Biodome was bigger than I thought and had all sorts of crazy animals I'd never seen before. The penguin exhibit was cute too. Worth visiting. :) ![]() Merrickville, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Jun 5, 2008 A friend introduced us to this shop. The owner Janet makes delicious mustards (among other things). All of the mustards are availabe to sample on site. In fact, the mustards are actually made right on site in the back of the shop. My favourites are the Honey Tarragon and the Hot Whiskey. You have to try them! The storefront itself is a gourmet food-lovers dream with every kind of spread, preserve, sauce and oil you could hope for. :) ![]() Bruges, West-Vlaanderen Region, Belgium ![]() Added Jun 4, 2008 I at first hesitated to write a review about this place because, well, self disclosure: I'm not really a big fan of museums. I ended up going to this one because I happened to be in Bruges for the weekend, and my friend Aaron thought we had to go. After all, it's considered one of the top attractions in the city. The museum building I quite liked. It was nestled in this part of town that really didn't make the outside look like a museum much. For a non-museum lover, I enjoyed the exhibits too. I'm sure REAL art enthusiasts would get an even greater appreciation. ![]() Canada ![]() Added Jun 4, 2008 The Notre-Dame Basilica is located in Old Montreal, and is one of the most impressive buildings in the area. Trouble for me though is I had just come back from Paris after seeing the original Notre-Dame for the first time, and something just didn't quite compare right. Worth visiting though! ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added May 29, 2008 Not surprisingly as a teenager, this was a popular hangout for me. I'd go to the different department stores to try to bum free perfume samples off the cosmeticians. Nowadays, it's a nice mall with a good "usual" selection of mall-type stores. ![]() Victoria, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added May 28, 2008 Great place to have afternoon tea. ![]() Sunrise, Florida, United States ![]() Added May 27, 2008 Went here for years and years to do all my outlet shopping before I finally moved to the US. Now I live near tonnes of outlets. Yay. :) ![]() Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added May 25, 2008 I went here. I have to love it! :) Fantastic views of the lower mainland from the campus. ![]() Burlington, Vermont, United States ![]() Added May 25, 2008 Drove down here from Montreal one weekend with friends. It was in the middle of winter and the lake looked frozen. Was quite a sight. Apparently there are ferry crossings that go across the lake. Lake Champlain is located right beside downtown Burlington, so it's an easy stroll away - great location to relax after a nice lunch or dinner. ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added May 25, 2008 I finally came here after living in Montreal for 3 years. It saw lots of interesting animals that I had never seen before, as well as lots of impressive plants. The complex was much larger than I had expected and it took us some time to get through. They have everything from macaws to tropical fish and penguins. ![]() Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added May 24, 2008 Given how tall the surrounding coastal mountains are, I always thought Burnaby Mountain didn't really seem tall enough to be considered a mountain. But drive up to the park, take a look at the views from the top of the lower mainland (and all the way out to the ocean), and the mountain's 370m feels that much taller. ![]() Victoria, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added May 24, 2008 I'm pretty sure this was the place I went to on a high school field trip. This Victorian-style Cemetery had really elaborate mausoleums. We went at dusk which of course added to the atmosphere. ![]() Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added May 21, 2008 Found this place in a guidebook about the 100 best hikes in BC. Driving there took a while from Burnaby but the end result was so worth it - panoramic snow capped mountain views all around near the summit. Most of the road is steep four wheel drive terrain so if your car can't make it then you will have to hike the extra distance. That was fine for me - the extra distance made it the length of a regular hike. It's 5 hours with a regular car and 40 minutes if you have 4 wheel drive. Highly recommended hike. ![]() Brackendale, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added May 20, 2008 My friend - who loves birds told me all about this place. I had heard about it being billed as "Eagle Capital of the World", but it's something else going up to the park and seeing hundreds of eagles perched amongst the trees. A pretty crazy experience. :) ![]() Ottawa, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added May 19, 2008 I first came here in the middle of winter February 2001 some time at night. The canal was completely frozen and filled with skaters merrily heading up and down the canal as far as the eye could see. The canal was quite the hub of activity between said skaters traversing the canal and pedistrians (like me) cutting across the canal :) Meanwhile the scent of food stalls selling beaver tails wafted through the air making a cold night feel just that much warmer and more festive. The canal is something you should see during different seasons as its personality varies quite a bit. ![]() West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Apr 23, 2008 Situated in West Vancouver, Lighthouse Park contains lots of great trails and protects a lot of old growth forests. There are many great lookouts of downtown Vancouver. :) ![]() Tsawwassen, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Apr 23, 2008 I remember the first time I saw this place I thought it was the coolest thing. When the tide was out, you could wade waaay out into the bay. Bring flipflops or some sort of footwear though before you venture into the bay! ![]() Los Angeles, California, United States ![]() Added Feb 19, 2008 The things that happened at this place would have been comical if it didn't actually happen. We went to this place in hopes of finding a quick in-out brunch place since our friend had to catch a flight. The four of us sit down and proceed to make an order. Order #1 - fresh fruit bowl + oatmeal. Request that the fruit bowl exclude honeydew & cantaloupe. Cost is $13 Order #2 - 2 eggs, sunnyside up. Cost is $11.95 Order #3 - Bread basket - $4 Order #4 - Hotdog Brioche. Our waiter comes back, there are no hot dogs. Gives me the menu and asks me to find something else. Our waiter comes back again, fresh fruit bowl is primarily honeydew & cantaloupe. To exclude those the cost of the fruit bowl has to double. My friend declines. Friend #3 adds a salad to his order of breadbasket, I change my order to an Almond Croissant. Waiter comes back, gives me a raisin and chocolate croissant. They are out of almond croissants. That croissant is on the house. The eggs come. All that is on a giant plate are two eggs sunny side up and two tiny pieces of toast. All that for $11.95. I kid you not. The salad come. My friend starts chewing, and part way through he pulls out of his mouth something that looks like a bandage. Not. Looking. Good. Waiter comes, we show him the plate. He can't believe it. As he takes the plate into the kitchen, we overhear him "Oh mother fu-" A visibly contrite water comes back, explains thankfully that the "bandage" is actually duct tape. Goodness knows why that was beside the food, but that was how it was mixed in. The salad is now on the house. We are eager to go at this point and we get our bill. Even with two of our four items comp'd, the bill still came to $25. Un-believable! At least the waiter was really nice. We all felt bad for the guy. Aaron C. commented... Added Mar 6, 2008 You so funny when you say stuff. That is a hilarious review of Breadbar (at least it was since I wasn't there). *strikes Breadbar off the list of places to go to in Los Angeles* ![]() Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 28, 2008 I remember going to this restaurant often as a teenager with friends. Having not been for a while, I thought I'd meet up with friends and eat there again. They have a pasta section that allows you to mix and match various types of pasta with sauce, as well as pasta dishes such as clam, primavera, lasagna, etc. I was in the mood for vegetables, so I got the primavera. The portions I got were -massive-, but the taste left a little bit to be desired. I think I would have preferred if there was less food, but bigger punch. I didn't remember the pasta being like that when I went before, so it might be just the new location trying to find their way. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 28, 2008 We went here with the hopes of sitting down for some dessert, but one look at the crowds gathering outside of the tiny place on this particular cold night and we switched our order to takeout. The cakes looked good - I ordered the "Smooth Operator" - a chocolate sponge cake with marscapone and raspberry which was pretty darn good - but pretty pricey at about $10 a small slice. The other item - Sweet Revenge was a small dense bitter chocolate cake. The first cake was good, the second one was okay. Nothing was bad, but I needed a better price-quality ratio to be blown away. ![]() Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 28, 2008 I wavered on whether this restaurant was worth 3 or 4 stores. Most items on the menu are on the pricier side. with entrees in the $20-$30 range. On the appetizer page though are these lettuce wraps that come in huge portions. You have your choice of 1 to 10 chillies (2 is plenty spicy), and it's a pretty filling and incredibly good valued meal for $12-$14. That was pretty worth it. I went in the winter and the restaurant was a bit cold, but the wait-staff was nice and accommodating ![]() Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 28, 2008 This was my friend's favourite burger joint in Kamloops, so I was really excited to check it out. Walking in, I was greeted with the aroma of burgers. Mmm I was hungry and ready to order. I got the Mr. Mike's deluxe burger which, unlike regular burgers, is not served on a bun. It's served on some baguette like garlic bread that's buttered and toasted. The patty was tasty, the sauce was delicious, and I even ate a lot of the fries. This is by no means a formal dining establishment at all, and everywhere around me were families huddled around their tables gobbling back their burgers or salad. It reminded me of our family outings to the local diner. I liked it. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 28, 2008 If you like light and fluffy cheesecakes, this is the place. The portions are not huge, so you don't walk out of the place feeling like you're going to roll over. The service was fast, and I enjoyed my regular cheesecake served with strawberries and whipped cream. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 10, 2008 I came here on the recommendation of my sister with a bunch of friends. We shared many dishes, including a salmon carpaccio, sashimi tacos, crab and avocado tartare, tempura and more. Some of the food was hit and miss, but the were a few standouts (the carpaccio and sashimi tacos in particular). The drinks are very very well priced, including the evening favourite - "Golden Balls" - a soho, apple juice, peach schnapps concoction with two pieces of lychee for $5.95. We also enjoyed the oyster platter, which Iooked pretty popular given the number of platters I saw coming out of the kitchen. A good place to go with friends, but don't go if you're starving. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 10, 2008 I had long heard about this place from a friend - billed as his favourite restaurant. I finally got a chance to check it out years later and it really lived up to expectations. What I really like about The Foundation is that the food is not only healthy, it's delicious and the portions are great. You aren't going to get overloaded on carbs here. There is a lot of emphasis on fresh vegetables and fruits, a lot of healthy grains, not too many carbs, all mixed together in delicious combinations. Their appetizer platter features a good combination of items from hummus to yam dip and mango salad to a yummy cereal mix. Prices are very reasonable, ranging from $6.95 to around $13. Only drawback is that the service is really really slow. The restaurant is a bit understaffed so the poor wait staff runs around like crazy. Worth the wait, but plan accordingly. ![]() Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 10, 2008 I first discovered this place after wondering for ages how it could be in business for being so empty all the time. When I finally tried it, I was totally blown away. It is currently my absolute favourite greek restaurant ever. When I moved to Montreal, I was not able to find a replacement, nor in Toronto, nor now in Mountain View, and goodness knows I've tried. Their roast lamb is unbelievably juicy and their rice and potatoes are fantastic. I think every entree comes with your choice of greek or caesar salad, as well as pita bread and tzatziki. Sooo good. Highly recommended. (Btw, I think they are empty because the volume comes primarily from takeout). ![]() Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 10, 2008 Once upon a time I rated this place 5 stars. Really large portions, fresh fish, good tasting sushi. Last few times I went I found strands of hair in my food so I need to downgrade the rating as a result. My recommendation is to try the awesome roll. ![]() Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jan 10, 2008 I went here for lunch. Hello Toast was having their soup special, which is all you can eat soup at $8.95. The choices of soup were: Split Pea, Ukranian Hamburger, and something else. You could see it was pretty popular, as everywhere I looked around, people were sitting with their bowls of soup. Their bunless hamburger called out to me the most though, so I went with that. For $10.95, I got a home made hamburger patty topped with cheese and onions, their special dijon mustard sauce, some home fries and a special homemade dill salad. The portions were a good size - for a hungry appetite but not overkill. It was good. I like the way they seasoned their home fries with their own version of a steak spice mix. ![]() Tulum, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico ![]() Added Oct 30, 2007 These are biggest Maya ruins I'd ever seen...I suppose because they're the only ones I'd ever been to. Ok, so they're not the biggest out there, but they're certainly worthwhile for the postcard perfect location. We went as part of a group tour during a national meeting in my old life, and it was really striking to have these old ruins right beside the beautiful turquoise waters. It really does look like that in real life! Also cool were all the iguanas that were peeking out at every rock and cranny. ![]() Toronto, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Oct 20, 2007 Rounding out what felt like an endless continuous sequence of eating out (odd since I’m kinda of broke right now being that I haven’t gotten paid since July, otherwise known as 6 months ago), I met up with an old classmate for dinner at this place. It’s an Asian Pub that has a lot of Asian inspired and Asian fusion dishes. The décor was nice, with a lot of, wait for it, Asian influences. And I don’t mean bamboo screens or anything like that. Ingredients, such as giant cans of hoisin sauce were used as decorating elements. Sweet. I walked in, my usual late self and my friend was already seated, menus on the table. On the table were two glasses of water and also two mini shot glasses holding an orange liquid. They were mango-sake cocktail samples, courtesy of the house. A pretty nice touch, and quite delicious. Good way to kick off the evening. With this restaurant, you have two options. Their “prix fixe” menu, or a la carte. The prix fixe menu ran $20 for an appetizer, main and dessert. Sounded like a pretty good deal, so that’s what we went with. I got the green machine salad (a cucumber salad with a rice vinegar soy), and the special of the day, which was a tamarind spicy shrimp rice noodle dish. The portions were great (the salad I got was practically a meal size), and I got more than enough shrimp and noodles. Everything was tasty and colourful, and I liked the nice touch of adding a condiment platter with a mix of garlic oil, chili oil, soy, and tamarind and sugar liquid. The best part was the dessert. On the waitress’ suggestion, I got the Kubo Flaky, which is a layered dessert comprising phyllo, berries, cream in varying layers, all drowned in a passion fruit essence. Simply divine. My friend ordered the daily special salad -- a watercress and inari salad plus the Chinese five spices chicken for a main. For dessert she got the Crispy Lucky dumpings which tasted quite good. Crispy Lucky dumplings are these banana and chocolate wontons served with caramel sauce and coconut ice cream. Niiiice. Very niiice. The waitress was friendly and attentive, and kept our water glasses full throughout the evening. I’d go back. ![]() Toronto, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Oct 20, 2007 I went here last night with some good friends after craving sushi and missing Vancouver, so it was pretty good timing. I was hungry as heck upon arrival (imo the optimal state for arrival to any dining establishment where you aren’t paying by the dish), so things were off to a good start. The place was brightly lit, quite spacious, and not too crowded. We were seated in the middle of the restaurant and promptly handed our menus. The all you can eat selection is pretty decent, with a good mix of cold dishes (daikon salad, wakame salad, green salad), appetizers (tempura, tonkasu, gyoza, etc.), a lot of noodle dishes, and a whole page devoted to sushi related items (including 6 or so items in the sashimi section, 12 in the sushi, 15 or so maki rolls, and another 7 or 8 special rolls.) The sashimi tasted fairly fresh, though the tuna was still a bit frozen. And they certainly didn’t mis-advertise in their menu. The tuna was billed as “white tuna”, and some white tuna it was. It was so white I thought it would glow in the dark. Wow that was some spotless bleached looking fish. I’d also never seen sashimi masago, which was essentially masago scooped onto some cucumber slices. Almost, almost, masago overkill, but useful to address the issue that I’m about to describe next: I was not down with their rice to fish ratio. Now I must confess at this point that I’m a firm believer that the 80/20 rule applies in a whole lot of places, sushi being one of them. In this case, the 80/20 rule means that there should be 80% fish, 20% rice. At this place, it was more like 95/5. But in the wrong direction. The ratio here was more like 95% rice and 5% fish. Some pieces of fish were about as thin as seaweed. Which would have been disaster at a regular restaurant. But at an all you can eat? We fixed it by ordering extra sashimi to add to the rice. That masago with cucumber that I mentioned before? Perfect for that. At the end of the evening, that equated to just a minor blip in the annoyance meter, not enough to be totally prissy about it. So in all though, it was a fun place to discover with friends, but I might keep looking for a better sushi restaurant to become my regular hangout. ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Oct 20, 2007 I always get teased when I go to this restaurant, because being Asian and all, going there usually gets my companions and I free dessert, and occasionally free soup too. I’m convinced it’s my Asianess, and the fact that I use my kindergarden level Chinese on them, but somehow my friends are convinced it’s for some other reason. Anyhow, the food preparation is always quick, consistently good quality, delicious dishes (my favourites being their bok choy with shrimp balls, the half a steamed chicken with ginger, garlic and green onions, and their and their braised egg plant dish). Moon Shing also has great lunch specials, including $3.99 specials that come with soup or spring roll plus a main dish such as chicken chow mein. C’mon. In this day and age, where else do you get that kind of price / return ratio? ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Oct 20, 2007 One of my three favourite restaurants in Montreal, and apparently for the rest of Montreal as well, as the place is always packed. Decorated like a rustic Cabin à Sucre (sugar shack), the wait staff is highly personable, the place bustling with a lively ever-present din. The open kitchen allows you to smell the inviting aromas of the food being prepared throughout the restaurant, and if you sit at the bar, actually see the preparation of heaven in action. Literally too, because the richness of the food will probably kill you. From foie gras poutine to conserve en canard with foie gras to stuffed pigs foot with foie gras, everything is rich, flavourful, and simply deadly and divine all at once. The food isn’t fancily prepared, and the rough presentation (e.g., the actual pig's foot on your plate when you order pig’s foot) is part of the charm. The menu doesn’t change all too frequently (thank goodness), but the specific nuances of each dish changes according to the season and the mood. For wine enthusiasts, a huge walk in cellar that is visible from the restaurant offers you ample choices. An ode to Bacchus this place certainly is, and I for one, am in. ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Oct 20, 2007 Talk about an exclusive place. The restaurant was so obscure that the door was locked when we tried to get in. We had to call to get them to open it from the inside. Add to it the fact that there are no markings on the outside, no indication that it’s a restaurant, and you begin to think you’re embarking on something secret, a bit exclusive, and almost ritualistic. Again, it was GeckoGo-Aaron who found the place. We went there for lunch because we thought there would be no way we could afford dinner. They were just opening (hence the locked door), so not surprisingly, we were the first and only ones there. The menu changes from day to day according to the chef’s whim, and in fact, the menu of the day was still being typed up and delivered to us hot off the printer while we while we were getting seated. The menu is fairly limited, but all the items all sounded delicious. The appetizer salad was a mouthwatering start, and the lobster ravioli main was divine. Cool dining experience. ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Oct 20, 2007 What can I say? Ever since GeckoGo-Aaron found this place, we’ve been hooked. A delicious fusion of French and South American food with very reasonable prices for the quality, knowledgeable staff, and toys on the table makes this a loveable and fun place to have cravings for. It is one of my top 3 favourite restaurants in Montreal. An ever-changing menu means that there’s always something new to discover, and the table d’hôte menu options are always mouth-wateringly good. Without wine, the meals are quite affordable, at around $40 including tax, appetizer, main, dessert and coffee or tea; with wine, you can easily top $70 a head. Add to the fact that I can never resist adding the amuse bouche (the last time it was fois-gras with apricot and simply out of this world), and things go a little fou from there. I highly recommend this place, and in fact, I’m always out evangelizing it. Yummy! ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Oct 20, 2007 Given that GeckoGo-Eric lived right above this restaurant, it wasn’t like we could not go and check it out. In fact, at one point until they sealed the gap, you could peek through the crack into the kitchen below. Confusion is an eclectically decorated world fusion tapas bar. Seating options include the outdoor terrace, indoor booths, tables, and the tables that are furnished by swings instead of chairs. The chef is quite talented and inspired, and a wonderful array of tapas options are available, from vanilla infused scallops to roast duck legs prepared with a grape and raisin rice, and a delicious cardamom and cayenne chocolate fondant (molten lava cakes). The prices are a bit steep, ranging from about $6 to $20 per tapas item, but worth the occasional splurge. ![]() Toronto, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Oct 20, 2007 I should disclose first at this point that I don’t usually like pubs. I guess I’m just not that excited about the type of pub fare you can usually fined in well, pubs. But I was out-voted the time we went, and in we went. I was hungry, so aside from the pitcher of white beer we ordered, we also got some hot wings and fries. The hot wings came with a yummy blue cheese dressing, and the fries that came were out of this world. The shoe string fries were well seasoned, and were accompanied by a sufficiently powerful garlic mayonnaise that was just addictive. So much so we got a second order that was inhaled about as fast as the first order. The staff was friendly and personable, and I even got a free piece of chocolate (not on the menu) from the bartender as props for sneaking out there to settle the bill before my friends figured out what was going on. I’d go back. ![]() Wailua, Kauai, United States ![]() Added Oct 18, 2007 It was billed as one of the most accessible waterfalls on the island. Lazy as I was feeling, it seemed a good bet. The falls were pretty, but I guess I've seen too many waterfalls, so I didn't find it that spectacular. Then again, it was probably fairly dry when I went, so the waterfall may not have been at its full glory. It's so easy to get to though it's worth a visit. :) ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Oct 4, 2007 It's my usual hang out when I come back into town, so how can I hate it? :) Extensive collection of sushi and other random things. Only drawback is the dessert. It's only mango pudding, and the mango pudding is pretty hurting. ![]() Squamish, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Oct 4, 2007 When I first arrived to B.C., this was one of the first places I went. Driving along up Hwy 99 on the way to Whistler, you can see Shannon Falls tumble down above the forests. It's a pretty fall, with lots of picnic tables around the area and good short trails. Makes for a nice stopover point on your way up to Whistler, or an equally good destination for a day trip. I remember being impressed then, and it's still a nice place now. It won't compare to some of the waterfall "greats of the world", but then again, who's counting? :) ![]() Arusha, Northeastern Tanzania, Tanzania ![]() Added Sep 21, 2007 Totally, totally, unbelievable. I mean, I had seen the IMAXTM version. I knew what I was expecting, but WOW. C'est unnnn-believable. We came to the Serengeti Plains via a chartered jet, because we were on a time crunch, and I wanted to maximize land-roving time. All during the flight, I would squint my eyes and crane my neck to scan over the terrain for any signs of wildlife. Nothing. Nothing, but the rolling savanna. Then, as we were about to land, I see a sign of movement. It's a zebra. Holy #%*($ it's a pack of Zebras. Then I see some gazelles! And more! Suddenly, what looked like a desolate plain had transformed into an animated microcosm. Why the heck wasn't I able to notice them before? I tell you, seeing these things on the Discovery channel is one thing. Being there, and watching is a completely different experience. We were there 4 days, each day looking at a different region, and I think I could have stayed easily another 4 more. I was excited just looking at the "common" animals, let alone the leopards, many lions, cheetahs, and elephants. By the way, if you come, you should really go on a 4x4. I felt sorry looking at the crowded vans packed with people each vying for a good spot. This is one of those places you shell out, sit down, then get right back up to enjoy. Oh, and for laughs and giggles, check out the dudes with the huge-arse telescope cameras. Sorry dudes. ![]() Kapaa, Kauai, United States ![]() Added Sep 21, 2007 Soooo many people said it was the best sushi on the island. SOOOO many people. With that kind of pressure, of course I had to try it out. I was pretty beat that day, so I decided to get takeout. Their sushi options were pretty creative - ahi rolls with cayenne pepper and all, so I was quite excited. After a 60 minute wait for the takeout, I ended up being a bit disappointed. I mean, the sushi was good, but two huge knocks: First - they bill their california rolls as made with real crab meat, and staring at the alaskan pollok that was staring back at me, I'd say it was about as real crab as any other packs of imitation crab meat I ever saw in the supermarket. Second hit? Portions were *small.* For like $10 rolls, I expect to see more than mainland maki-sized portions. I mean, isn't this an island? Aren't there fishies swimming all around? C'mon! Cost of transportation for the rice must have been higher than the fish! You sooo could have supersized those rolls. Supersize them! So they would just look...normal. ![]() Lihue, Kauai, United States ![]() Added Sep 21, 2007 I love hole-in-the-wall dining places. Better yet, I love hole-in-the-wall dining places that I would have never found unless the most popular guidebook for the island told me to go. Mark's place is situated in a really industrial part of Lihue, smack in the middle of not much for tourists. The whole place is very pedestrian, but the food was good. I got the Mixed Plate, and it came with a whole lot of food. It ended up being two meals for me. If I had to do it again though, I'd just get beef teriyaki. Their teriyaki was unbelievably good. ![]() Lawai, Kauai, United States ![]() Added Sep 21, 2007 I dug the place. As soon as we pulled into the parking lot, I ran past all the warning signs down the super short path directly onto the lava rock. Every few minutes the waves will crash on through the sea tunnels, and each time you would hear the belching sounds coming from the two water holes. Interspersed between these moments would be a nice and impressive gush of water would blast through the smaller blowhole. Certainly gets your attention more than "just another random beach along the shore." :) Btw, don't be an idiot. Don't stand between the hole and the sea. They mean it when they say there are sudden surges. I don't know where those buggers come from, but suddenly there will be some huge wave, and getting knocked around in that surf would HURT. ![]() Waimea, Kauai, United States ![]() Added Sep 7, 2007 It was cool. But was it worth trying to drive there on multiple occasions in hopes that the bleeping fog would lift so that we could just see the sights? At 40 miles round trip...I dunno. But the sunset views were pretty spectacular, and there were a lot of lookouts points...and it's not like I can visit the place like it's in my backyard. If you have time though, I recommend allocating some days to hiking the trails. I'm sure that experience would have beat sitting in a rental car and hopping out at "lookout points." ![]() Waimea, Big Island, United States ![]() Added Sep 7, 2007 The guidebook I was reading said "go," so like obedient little lambs, of course we went. They have an insane assortment of syrups that you can add to your shave ice. Procedure goes like this: (they even write it down for you): 1. Tell them what size you want. 2. Tell them if you want ice cream (your answer should be yes, and it should be macadamia nut ice cream) 3. Tell them, then, and only then, what syrup flavours you want. 4. (bonus step), tell them if you want coconut cream, or regular cream on top. For your easy ordering benefit, they have created popular flavour combinations such as tropical, rainbow. You can pick those if you want, or choose from the different flavours. Verdict? I liked it, though at times I found the whole combination a bit too sweet. Nonetheless, it didn't stop me from going back and ordering again. :) ![]() Princeville, Kauai, United States ![]() Added Aug 28, 2007 I saw pictures of this in a guidebook and immediately wanted to check it out - a refreshing clear greenish pool framed against black lava rocks? Awesome! It was on our way back to the hotel, so I decided to stop by. Turned out to be one of the more interesting mini excursions for me on Kauai. You access the baths after a small interesting little mini hike, which heightens the sense of anticipation. Most of the hike is shaded, which is great on a warm summer day (when I went). When we went, fruit trees were in season (I think they were passionfruit?), and the lovely fruit fragrance accompanied us all the way down. This place is definitely a popular hangout, as all along the trail, I saw people streaming up and down the path. At first when I got to the shore, I was surprised - where's the bath? A quick look to the left and semi-distinct figures standing to the west gave me my answer. The pics in the book were cool, but actually standing there was way the heck better. Visibility into the water was clearer than I thought, and colourful schools of fish swam around in the water, oblivious to the human counterparts. Looking around at the pounding surf was a treat as well - the waters were some of the rougher ones that I had seen on the island. Then of course, my favourite part was watching all the sea turtles swimming around just outside the bath. I don't know if they were just there for the day, but there were certainly many of them. Crazy to see them get swept around under the surf. Very fun. The only drawback were the bit-much crowds, which of course, I contributed to, so what am I saying? :) ![]() Wailua, Kauai, United States ![]() Added Aug 26, 2007 I was really looking forward to trying this place. I mean, all the guidebooks gave it good reviews, from Fodor's to Frommer's to the Kauai Revealed Guidebook. Looking online too, I was excited about the menu. Ahi Tuna? Wasabi sauce? Sounded like it would be a fantastic dinner. Maybe I didn't read too deeply in, but the place wasn't quite what I expected. The guidebooks warned that it would be a long wait for the food...and it was a looooong wait, and then some. After what felt like a good long time, I saw what I thought was going to be my dish head my way, and promptly get deposited on the table beside mine. Several minutes later, I heard the waitress yell at the patrons. Why didn't they tell her she gave them the wrong order? As it turns out, I think they got my order. Some more time passes, and I eventually got what I ordered. My first thought? Disappointment. The Pacific Rim platter was officially billed as Ahi Tuna with Tofu Potstickers glazed with Jungle Jazz mango grilling Sauce served on a bed of Silver Noodle Salad, Peanut Dressing, and Rice. What I actually got was a volcano of rice with several pieces of noodles with 5 pieces of cucumber and some pieces of potstickers and a piece of tuna as an afterthought. I guess at $21 a plate, I expected more. Perhaps it's from the excellent value that I had gotten from the other places, but I really felt gypped. Not to mention that the tuna glaze was seriously sweet, and that the tuna looked more like breaded chicken fingers and tasted like dried out cardboard. This turned out to be my most disappointing experience on the island yet. ![]() Las Vegas, Nevada, United States ![]() Added Aug 26, 2007 During our impromptu Vegas trip, our culinary expert Aaron suggested that this would be the place to go. So like flocks of sheep, we went. The thing about Vegas buffets is that long lineups are everywhere. This was no exception. I went there for their Sunday Champagne Brunch, arrived around 11:00, and probably waited 40 minutes, which I considered fairly reasonable for a buffet around here. Their Sunday brunch runs about $27 a person, and includes champagne (duh!). I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I was pleasantly surprised. There are many different stations, from crepes to lamb to seafood and grilled vegetables, and their dessert station had many different items to choose from, including creme caramel and creme brulee. Lovely stuff - for a buffet. My favourite station of all must have been their cold bar, with the crab legs and shrimp. Mmmm. :) ![]() Wailua, Kauai, United States ![]() Added Aug 25, 2007 I love Korean food, so I'm always looking for any good excuse to try a place. I found the restaurant to be of surprisingly good value, and quite tasty. Their vegetable side dishes were a little bit on the plain and bland side, and my eyebrows raised at what looked like potato salad on my plate, but they more than made up for it with generous portions of meat, which were prepared quite deliciously. The barbeque meats were well marinated and very tender. And all this for about the same prices back home. In all, very good value. Service is quick too. ![]() Wailua, Kauai, United States ![]() Added Aug 24, 2007 I went to this restaurant because it was within walking distance of the hotel at which I was staying (one of the ResortQuests). I ordered their Som Tum (Green Papaya Salad), the summer rolls (with chicken), and their Basil Vegetable Stirfry (with chicken). As I was told that food on Hawaii is usually expensive, my expectations weren't that high given that the menu items ranged from about $7.95 to $11.95. The food was -alright-. It wasn't bad (though the chicken was a bit dry), but it didn't really blow my mind. I didn't regret my dining experience, but I wouldn't go back. The waitress was really attentive though, and she came around often to refill my glass of water. ![]() Lihue, Kauai, United States ![]() Added Aug 24, 2007 I originally read about this place in a guide book, and being that my love of noodles is not unfamous, decided it would be a good first stop to try upon arriving to the Garden Isle. It did not disappoint. The noodle store is located on an unassuming strip that feels more like a back alley. You drive down near the end, and on the left is the shack like place with a simple sign "Hamura's Saimin" on the outside. Once inside, you're greeted with a snake-like countertop that winds around the room. Sit at one of the many stools along the countertop, and a waitress will give you their menu. Those who get paralyzed by decisions need not fear - the choice is simple here. Choose between "regular" or "special", and maybe some barbeque meats like pork or chicken. I got the special. The special is like all-dressed chips. You get everything in. Some lettuce, some green onions, a few wonton, noodles, a delicious soup broth, some ham, and half an egg. All of this, for $6, which seemed like a pretty good value considering how much I'd heard about how $$$$ Hawai'i is. Looking around, the composition of the patrons seems to be mostly locals, with some tourists. I overheard that the group next to me came here upon the recommendations of some locals on the plane. Anyway, to sum up, it was good stuff. I heart the place, and would recommend it. ![]() Las Vegas, Nevada, United States ![]() Added Aug 19, 2007 Having heard about this buffet since I was a gangly teenager, I'd been dying to try this buffet for EVER. Add to the fact that I wasn't able to go the last time, and you can imagine I was hopping with excitement to try the buffet this time around. My road trip buddies had to listen to "buffet strategy" the whole drive down from San Francisco to Vegas. :) After that kind of preamble, what did I think? I enjoyed my experience. It was a bit pricier than I expected, and some things were overbilled (they claim to offer lobster, but they are actually langoustines), but the food was delicious, and our waitress was friendly and attentive. I'd go again, but not on this trip. ![]() Toronto, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Jun 26, 2007 Having had my fair share of bad Indian buffets, I had some reservations about trying this place, but I was simply famished, I needed to make a decision fast, and this restaurant had the biggest lineup of people in little India so I decided to follow the herd. I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant offered a combination of a la carte dining or their buffet, but the inviting aromas of quelque chose coming from the buffet lines and my grumbling stomach made the decision. And I don’t regret it a bit. The nan was tasty, the curries scrumptious and the meat tender, unlike some other Indian Buffets I’d been where the meat was dry like jerky. The most pleasant two discoveries in the bunch were their spinach and cheese, and okra dish. Mmm. The waiters were all very attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere was nice. At $12.95 a person for dinner, it’s well worth the price. ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Jun 26, 2007 This was my staple dining spot for 4 years, so it better have been good right? Fast, reliable and consistently good Chinese food awaits at this café that is often full of students for Concordia, or as was the case for me, ravenous YMCA gym members post-workout. The menu features a number of lunch and dinner specials that are well worth their price, but my favorites always were the Gai-Lan dish, the Ragout de Boeuf (beef stew), and their spicy salt prawn stirfry. The waiters and waitress are friendly in their brisk fashion, and are willing to accommodate modifications (e.g., I’ll have the ragout de boeuf with extra ginger and black pepper please). The extremely affordable large portions mean that you have multiple meals out of it if you get takeout. The place is known for their General Tao, and in fact, a big blown up picture of their dish complete with local newspaper review is hung on the outside of the door. Highly recommended. ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Jun 26, 2007 Whatever the heck time you get to this store, there’s always someone else in there buying bagels too. And for a darn good reason. The bagels are bloody good. Aside from bagel options (for sweet bagels, the cinnamon raison can’t be beat), you can also get accompaniments such as cream cheeses and salmon spreads. Mmm. Carbs. ![]() Toronto, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Jun 26, 2007 Having not tried Cuban food prior to Julie’s, I was excited to see what it was like, and word on the street from friends about the place was positive. This low key, busy, homestyle restaurant offered a variety of delicious traditional fare. We all ordered regular entrees, and THEN OD’d on a hearty selection of appetizers. Their Frituras de Mais (peppery corn fritters with sour cream) were so good that we had to order it three times, and the Chirzo in red wine was completely memorable. Everything was well-seasoned, aromatic, and just good. I’d say the only downside was that the portions aren’t massive, and the amount we ordered came with a correspondingly high sticker-shock price, leaving me a smidgen disappointed with the price quality ratio. At the end of the day, it’s the kind of place I would go to occasionally, but it wouldn’t become a food mecca for me. ![]() Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Jun 26, 2007 Situated on the external perimeter of the Ramada Hotel, this Golden Griddle is a bit cheaper than the one closer to the heart of Niagara Falls tourist trap centre. They offer a weekend brunch for $9.95 (versus $12.95 closer to “downtown”), which gives you a nice selection ranging from an omelette station, a fruit and salad bar, pudding and rice crispy treats bar, to cereals and various hot foods including baked beans, scrambled eggs, perogies, porridge and all. Self disclosure notice – I’m not a big fan of breakfast food. Understandably, therefore, I wasn’t terribly impressed with what we got. The food was so-so, but it was about what I expected. The waitress was nice; she got us a new pot of coffee when she realized the cup she poured was a bit lukewarm, and the great thing was no wait time. Having discovered the Niagara Falls Casio buffet after the fact though, I would have much rather gone to that instead. ![]() Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Jun 26, 2007 Niagara Falls must be in the running for meat-eating capital of North America. Everywhere you look, there are Steakhouses. Given that we were on the Canadian side of the border, we wanted to go to the Keg, billed as Canada’s most popular steakhouse. We were in for a treat, as this location, named the Falls Views Restaurant, is exactly as described. Located on the 9th floor of the Embassy Suites hotel, the restaurant features wall to ceiling windows showcasing both the Canadian and American falls. Lucky for my buddy and I, it was not too crowded that night, and we got a two person table right against the window, where we were treated by the changing lights illuminating the two waterfalls (on until 10:00pm). The ambiance was great -- not too loud, the waitress was friendly, and the food is as you would expect from the Keg. Good quality steaks (we both got prime ribs), accompanied by a large helping of garlic mashed potatoes and fried onions. My only complaint is the lack of veggies. You do get a choice of veggies with the regular steaks, but not the prime rib option. So we ended up ordering the appetizer trio (Szechwan green beans, steamed asparagus and sautéed mushrooms) which was thoroughly delicious, but psychologically for me, would have been better included with the dinner and a correspondingly higher price. Anyway, I won’t complain too much. It was well worth it to go for the good steaks and the view. Imo a much better option than paying to go to some observation tower, elbow-fighting with all the other people vying for the same Kodak spot. ![]() Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Jun 26, 2007 Walking into this restaurant attached to a so-so looking hotel, I had my skepticism. I mean, cheesy name, advertising board out front screaming $15.99 Prime Rib smack in the heart of tourist trap North America? I was feelin’ the good vibes. But being that I just wasn’t in the mood for another famous franchised eatery, in we went. Given the name of the restaurant, the décor not surprisingly featured a nautical theme. Giant fishnets and various ship related paraphernalia inside a wooden cabin. Correspondingly, the menu included a lot of seafood items, including a special couples section for multi-course meals for two. Lobster, crab, all of the usual seafood could be had on both fixed and market price menus. There are also a couple house specialties – seafood dishes with an Italian tomato sauce or cream sauce. Not to be outdone, a selection of chicken (including chicken cordon bleu), steaks, and pastas were also there to chosen. ![]() Toronto, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Jun 26, 2007 Having lived in Toronto for some time, and not actually venturing out much, I decided I needed to get hip with the scene. Actually, I just wanted to get out of the house. I had already eaten dinner, didn’t want to go to a mall, didn’t want to feel bloody cold outside because it happened to be winter, and so a coffee shop seemed to do the trick. On my friend’s suggestion, I went over to Dooney’s on Bloor. In a street surrounded by Starbucks and Second Cups, you know that the coffee shop has to be halfway decent to survive. There was a very light crowd, which was not too surprising on a Tuesday evening at 10:30pm. Those who were there looked to be friends getting together. I’ve heard though that this place is a writer’s mecca. The heater must have been turned low because the temperature was a bit cool. I kept my jacket on until I pour a half cup of java down my belly. ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Jun 26, 2007 This restaurant was recommended by someone whose cooking I respect, so I had high hopes going there. High enough to cajoled 4 friends to accompany me. It is a little Brazilian/Mexican restaurant is somewhat hidden on Marie-Anne Street by a fairly non-descript small door. The small close quarters mean that diners dine quite closely together, so thank goodness there is a closet for you to hang your winter clothes. Outside of the appetizers that you can order in addition, the menus are all table d’hôte. In other words whatever you order, will, come with a soup, your main, coffee or tea and dessert. Even with all of that together though, the food was quite disappointing. I didn’t actually feel like I was eating anything special, and the quality was about what I would expect some college kids to slap together. So in all, I was quite surprised. The wait staff was decent and I had some good times with friends, but I doubt I will go back. ![]() Toronto, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Jun 26, 2007 Now, I’m a self professed sushi junkie, and coming from Vancouver, the land of the all-you-can-eat establishments, I’m pretty critical of sushi restaurants. It was a bit of a wait (maybe 40 minutes?) to get seated, which felt about 4 times longer because it was freezing cold outside, but I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of food I got. I ordered myself an Honour Roll (Salmon, Tobiko, Green Onion, Avocado) and split a Sweet Tempura & Avocado roll with my friends, and that was enough to feel pleasantly full. My total? $7.50 for the I’m-full-now feeling of goodness. The waitress was friendly and attentive, didn’t mind that we loitered in the establishment for a good several hours, and made sure we always had warm tea in our cups. Not bad, I say. For extra entertainment, order the Ginger Wasabi Roll, which basically includes Ginger, Wasabi, and Salmon. That’s it. The blazing fury and sinus-clearing effects of that much wasabi in a roll with no rice for buffer is sure to be an amusing spectacle for your friends. Just bring a camera so you, too, can appreciate it later. Much later. ![]() Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ![]() Added Jun 26, 2007 The store is so cute, you want to eat it too. Decorated with as much care as the cupcakes themselves, cupcakes with tantalizing names such as “butter cup”, “blue Hawaii” and “lava flow” are stacked neatly in cake platters all throughout the store. It’s a sensorial experience before the first bite. Then, shell out the $2.25 per cupcake and sink into the creative and delicious buttercream flavours. ![]() Toronto, Ontario, Canada ![]() Added Jun 26, 2007 I really was truly excited to visit this establishment. First discovered by yours truly over a year ago when I still lived in Montreal, it was the height of my cupcake craze, and the web site just looked so cute. Fast forward a year later, and I end up moving to Toronto, and had a chance to go with two friends of mine. We went a late Sunday afternoon, so their selection was, by then, a little sketchy. We had 3 choices of flavours. Not to be phased, I bought all 3 choices, and proceeded to eat them. And proceeded to feel profoundly disappointed. The one I chose for myself was coffee flavoured, and the result was light fluffy icing that was weak in flavour. The cake, likewise was bland, and if anything, a bit dry. What happened?! ![]() Montreal, Quebec, Canada ![]() Added Jun 26, 2007 I’m a little biased here. I like Rima, and this is one of the places I miss about Montreal. Cocoa Locale is a cute little bakery that more than makes up for its limited selection. Rima is experimenting all the time, so you’ll see flavours from Ginger-lemon tarts to Cayenne Caramom Chocolate cake. Every time I go to Montreal, I feel the urge to buy some cakes to take back with me, so I’d say that’s a pretty good testament to how much I like her cakes. :) ![]() Beijing, Beijing Province, China ![]() Added Jun 20, 2007 I went to see this place as part of a big guided tour. Not, in my opinion, the best way to go about things. We were shuttled from place to place following streams of people patiently filing their way around the palace. Stop here, take a picture there. When the guide told us rub the butts of these two lion sculptures for good luck, the group obediently went up and did so. So the guides said jump where?? That said, this is a stunning complex. You arrive, and immediately take a boat ride through this massive artificial lake. Once you land, you can explore the gardens, the buildlings and all the detailing - all of which was quite impressive. Now if only we could just lose some of the crowds. ![]() New York, New York, United States ![]() Added May 29, 2007 Walking into this bakery, I felt like I was walking back in time. I had heard lots about this bakery before I actually went, and what I heard was certainly enough for me to make a determined trek through downtown Manhattan near the cruise ship terminals where I was all the way down to west village where they were. (I gave up part way and took the taxi). But it was certainly worthwhile. The cupcakes aren’t fancy, but that’s part of their charm. Simply delicious and reasonably priced homestyle baking. I got a half dozen cupcakes to share with my friends, and certainly wished I got more. Well worth a visit. The lowdown on Pokin Y.What's this person like as a travel companion?
