Brunei is supposedly the wealthiest nation on earth - yet I was struck by the overwhelming poverty of the locals.  The Sultan of Brunei has all the wealth; it's an oil-rich country.  Mosques are gorgeous, there's some very interesting architecture, but the people living in the water villages live in great poverty.  The real draw for Brunei is to get out of Bandar Seri Begwan and go into the national parks to see wildlife.  Great hiking, lots of animals, that's where the real beauty lies.
