As a necessary middle-of-the-desert hamlet, San Pedro de Atacama is not that bad. Besides being a great starting point for seeing what's around--among others, the Atacama desert, the salty lagoons like Salar de Atacama, the gazillion mountains, the volcanos, and the hot and often sulphorous springs--San Pedro features nice shops (credit cards accepted), reasonable restaurants, and an incredibly diverse population (tourists included). Bring good shoes, warm clothes for the night, and an appetite for adventure.
