San Salvador has an eerie feel to it sometimes... hotels have grills, people are scared to go alone at night and stories of the Salvadorian mafia do the rounds... take care, even though as a tourist you are unlikely to get caught in the mafia wars... but petty crime exists too, like in the other big cities of Central America...
