Totally disagree with this tip. I live in Wellington and can say I prefer the North Island to South after having visited most major attractions and a vast number of lesser known attractions in both. It depends on what visitors are looking for. There is certainly more cultural things to do in the North Island compared to the south, but if you fancy skiing there is more opportunity for that in the South Island.
