Thailand Railway Line from Bankok to Singapore separates two Lines(West Line, East Line) at Hat Yai. and 13 hrs from Bankok. so many people get off the train at Hat Yai as a resting or staying. I think that Hat Yai is boring city for the tourist who want to see something or enjoy. but If you want to feel and see local living (market), Hat Yai is good for you. and one more thing Hat Yai is famous for tempting. be careful.
