If you visit Khor Virap Monastery, you take it in the early morning, 'cause we arrived at 1 p.m. and we couldn't see anything about the Ararat, the sun was rising to our eyes.

Yerevan is a great place to visit. The people are very hospitible. The Congress Hotel is a great alternative to the Marriott for Western lodging, and the on-site pool area and restaurant are great. The Bellaggio is a great place to eat, and be sure to experience the great gardens and cafe spots around the opera house. Must have khorovatz (barbque, usually pork) with lavash (local handmade flatbread), sold everywhere. Food is great overall with strong Mediterranean, Persian, and Russian influences.

Be sure and go to the supermarket and buy a pig's stomach full of wine, as you cannot get that anywhere else ;) They would not let me take a coke bottle of homewine on the plane, so.....

Amberd is the ruins of an ancient Armenian fortress in one of Ahstarak's gorgeous valleys.

It's only 15-20 minutes drive from Yerevan. So, if you are in Armenia, try to visit Artashat. First, they have the most delicious fruits there. Secondly, you will enjoy the view of Mount Ararat. Breathtaking!
