Churchill, Manitoba, Canada
Polar bear capital of the world, but they should also add beluga capital of the world. Go in August or July to see belugas giving birth. They do not care that humans are there at all.

Churchill, Manitoba, Canada
This is a very tiny town in the middle of nowhere. But it is the place to go to to see the polar bears. You can sign up for a day tour once you get there or book a package ahead of time. They take you out on the tundra on special buses with huge wheels in search of the bears. And when they find them it is amazing!!!! The bears will come over to the buses and stand upright to try and look in...scary but awesome. Not much to do in the town itself, but there are a few beautiful shops with amazing native canadian art and souvenirs. If arctic char is on the menu try it is really good fish. I was alone and it was very safe.

Churchill is a wonderful place to visit in Manitoba. It is commonly known as the polar bear capital of the world but it is also the beluga whale capital of the world! I can attest to this since I visited Churchill in July 2006 to view thousands of belugas. I did this through the Churchill Northern Studies Centre which is much less expensive than any other tour group. Also, take the two day train ride from Winnipeg to Churchill. It is very scenic and relaxing. Even though I went to Churchill to see belugas, I did have the opportunity to see two polar bears while I was there (although October-November is the best time to view them).
