San Pedro de Atacama, Norte Grande, Chile
When I was there in 2003 there was no ATM (not sure about now) so we had to travel to Calama to get money. We were lucky we had enough money from a previous trip into Chile to be able to pay for the bus!

really thought the city was overpriced, over-touristed and over-rated. as far as chilean cities go, liked Valparaiso and Santiago much better. you can start or finish salt plains tours here (Uyuni, Bolivia being the other side.) Don't let the guys on the tour tell you you can't bring alchohal to the other side of the border- they just want to drink your alchohal for free. That said, the dramatic desert landscape was spectacular.

Such a Wild West town with upteen tourist and hotel places. Tourists make it what it is and come in droves. Go mountain biking and sandboarding in the Death Valley. Go to the Museum and take in the towns only nightclub with some Pisco Sourzzzz.

San Pedro is the point for setting off into the Atacama desert. The village itself is dusty, full of backpackers drinking pisco sour and full of people trying to get you to join their tour. However: rent a bike and cycle into the wonderful dry and deserted world of Atacama and all is soon fogotten. What a magical place! Leave early, take plenty of water and suncream and go back at the end of the day to watch the landscape become all Mars-like sitting on a hill. Also: do book a tour from San Pedro to go see El Tatio geisers early in the morning. Very toursity, but when was the last time you swam in a hot pool at 4500 meters, or boiled an egg in the open air without a heater in sight?!

If you're planning to do the whole South America clockwise, this is probably one thing not to miss!!! From here you can take a 4x4 (with driver) to Uyuni, Bolivia driving across moonlike landscape and Salar de Uyuni which is the world's largest salt flat. The view was breathtaking!!!

San Pedro is located 1.670 kms north from Santiago de Chile. To get there first you have to reach Calama.
San Pedro de Atacama is a small village located in one of the many oases which are founded in the altiplano of the second region of Chile.

The climate is desert-like in altitude and with a marked thermic oscillation .
Winter temperature: 22ºC by day and 4ºC by night (blue sky all the year)
Summer temperature: 27ºC by day and 16ºC by night (occasional rains)

No matter the season, it is recommended to take shorts, t-shirts, bathing suit, sunblock and warm clothing for the night.
